The king sat above, the Hwa-shang was placed on the right, and the scholar on the left, with the Chan followers lined up behind them. The king handed a garland to each of them, saying, "You two debate, and whoever wins, the loser shall offer the garland. The loser shall not stay here." After saying this, the Hwa-shang said, "If one practices good or evil deeds, one will go to heaven or hell, thus one will not be liberated from samsara and it will be an obstacle to attaining Buddhahood. For example, just as any white or black cloud obscures the sky. Whoever does not think of anything, does not contemplate anything, will be completely liberated from samsara. Not thinking of anything, not discriminating, not contemplating, is non-objectification. Entering all at once is like the tenth bhumi." So he said. Then Kamalaśīla said, "Saying 'not thinking of anything' like that is abandoning discriminating wisdom. Since the root of true wisdom is discriminating wisdom, abandoning it also means abandoning wisdom that transcends the world. If there is no discriminating wisdom, how can a yogi abide in non-discrimination? If all dharmas are without memory and without mental activity, then all experiences cannot be remembered or mentally engaged with. If I think, 'I shall not remember the dharma,' that itself becomes a very strong act of remembering and mental engagement. If one merely stops remembering, then one would be in a state of non-discrimination during fainting or epilepsy. Without true discrimination, there is no method for entering non-discrimination. Even if one merely blocks memory, if there is no true discrimination, how can one enter the state of all dharmas being without inherent existence? Without realizing emptiness, one cannot abandon obscurations. Therefore, true wisdom dispels inverted appearances. Therefore, one should not pretend to be without memory while being mindful. Without memory and mental engagement, how can one remember past lives, and how can one become omniscient? How can one abandon afflictions? Therefore, a yogi who ascertains meaning with true wisdom, after realizing that all phenomena of the three times, internal and external, are empty, will pacify conceptualization and abandon all wrong views.

Therefore, by demonstrating it, being skilled in skillful means and wisdom, eliminating all obscurations, one will attain all the Buddha's teachings, so it was said. Then, the Emperor said: All the retinue should also have the opportunity to debate. Pal Yang said: If, like in the Chinese tradition, there is sudden entry and gradual cultivation, then the six perfections can be established from the perspective of disagreement. Generosity is established based on complete grasping; if all grasping is abandoned, it is the supreme of generosity. Similarly, apply this up to wisdom. For a long time after the Teacher passed away, there was no disagreement in views. Later, the three Madhyamaka schools disagreed; the Sudden School enters all at once, and because they do not know or understand, it is like that. Although the entrances are different, becoming a Buddha is the same, and the result is also the same. Yeshe Wangpo said: The two ways of sudden entry and gradual entry need to be distinguished. If it is gradual entry, there is no cause, and it is not like us; if it is sudden entry, what do you still do? If one becomes a Buddha from the beginning, what is wrong? Therefore, climbing a mountain also requires climbing step by step, just as one cannot cross it in one step. Even obtaining the first ground is difficult, let alone omniscience. According to our Zen tradition, we study all the scriptures with the three wisdoms, so we understand the meaning without error. We learn and meditate on the ten practices, so we obtain patience. We enter the first ground without fault, and gradually cultivate the ten grounds, so we perfect the two accumulations and become enlightened. Like you, without perfecting the accumulations, without cultivating wisdom, and not even understanding worldly affairs, how can you know all that is to be known? If you sleep without doing anything, you will not even taste food, and if you die of starvation, how can you achieve Buddhahood? If you take a step without examining or analyzing, you will fall and get hurt, how can you realize the Dharma? And so on, he spoke extensively. The Sudden School was unable to answer, offered a garland of flowers to the teacher, and admitted defeat. At that time, Cho Rma Rma and others felt sorrow, struck their bodies against stones and died, so it is said. Then, the Emperor said: From now on, study the view of Nagarjuna's tradition, and practice the ten practices and the six perfections. It is not permissible to practice the Sudden School's tradition. Thus he commanded, and sent the Hwashang back.
