Seeing that the stone cave was exhausted, and having practiced diligently for twelve years without any signs appearing, he felt discouraged and left. On the way, he saw a female dog whose lower body was being eaten by worms, and whose upper body was decaying and being devoured. He felt great compassion. If he removed the worms, the worms would die; if he didn't remove them, the dog would die. So he thought of cutting flesh from his own body to remove the worms. He went to a city called Atzenda, entered a blacksmith's shop, borrowed a golden razor, and cut flesh from his own body. He was afraid that if he picked them up with his hand, the worms would die, so he closed his eyes and thought of licking them off with his tongue. At that moment, the dog disappeared, and he saw the Lord with light. He said, "Alas, Father, my protector! Although I have strived with a hundred hardships, I have not achieved any results. Why does the compassionate rain cloud fall on the ocean that is burned by suffering and thirst? I have done so much, but no signs have appeared. Your compassion is so small." The Lord said, "Even if the king of gods sends down rain, bad seeds will not sprout. Even if the Buddhas appear, those without merit will not experience goodness. I have been here from the beginning, but you could not see me because of your own obscurations. Now, because you have generated great compassion, your obscurations have been purified, and you can see me. To prove this, carry me on your shoulders and show me to everyone." But he could not see, so he believed. The Lord asked him what he wanted, and he said that he wished for the flourishing of the Mahayana. The Lord said, "Hold onto my Dharma robe." Then they went to Tushita Heaven, and heard a cry of joy from the gods. It is said that he stayed there for fifty or fifty-three years. In the "Commentary on the Earth Chapter," it says that he stayed there for six months and listened to the Dharma. There, he heard the Sutras of the Mother and the Great Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, and many Mahayana Sutras. He requested to compose treatises explaining the meaning of these sutras, so he composed the Five Treatises of Maitreya. This is the view of Master Senge Zang and others. In the "Essence of Moonlight," it says that after the compilation of the scriptures, from that time on, these scriptures were extremely profound, difficult to understand and realize, and in order to realize this compassion, the Holy Maitreya clarified them with the treatise in verse form of the Ornament for Clear Realization. To say that the Holy Asanga requested it and it was completed later is a mistake of Senge Zang and others; it was actually completed earlier.

The so-called "Treatise on the Grounds" means, it is said, "belonging to others." Although Master Śāntipa also composed the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it is said that it is believed to have been composed by Maitreya. It is widely known that he listened to the five dharmas composed by Maitreya and then went to the human realm. He wrote the great treatises of the Mahāyāna, such as the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, or the extensive treatises establishing the three pitakas, the five sections of the Grounds, and the two summaries that gather their meanings. Therefore, the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* is a common summary of the Mahāyāna. Some say that Master Abhaya said that the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* is a Mahāyāna treatise, so it is not suitable for common use, but there is no fault. Although it is a Mahāyāna treatise, it is not contradictory to show the meaning of the three vehicles, just like the five sections of the Grounds. The five dharmas of Maitreya were also written down, and the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra-vṛtti* was composed, which shows the meaning of the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra* and the *Prajñāpāramitā*. He also composed commentaries on the *Ratnagotravibhāga* and commentaries on the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra*, and because he attained the third ground, he contributed to the teachings. In the clear explanation of the *Commentary on the Smaller Commentary*, it says that Master Asaṅga, although he attained the third ground of radiance, manifested as Mind-Only in order to subdue Vasubandhu. And in the *Mind-Only Ornament*, it says: What Maitreya and Asaṅga said, and Nāgārjuna also approved, endowed with valid cognition and scripture, the two truths are declared here. In the commentary here, it says: Maitreya is a bodhisattva of the tenth ground. Asaṅga is a bodhisattva abiding on the third ground. Nāgārjuna is a bodhisattva abiding on the first ground. Some say that in the upper commentary of the Grounds, it says: For the benefit of all the world, he is called Asaṅga. The nectar of dharma drawn by the power of the dharma stream samādhi. Poured from the vase of the face of the noble Maitreya. I prostrate to him who is offered with the palms of listening. And at the end of the *Compendium of Explanations*, it says: The noble Asaṅga crossed the ocean of the tenets of self and others, attained the excellence of the dharma stream samādhi, and took the stainless lotus feet of the noble Maitreya on his head. Thus, it is said that he abides in the dharma stream samādhi, and because he is on the path of accumulation, he is not a noble one, but calling the result by the name of the cause.
