Generally, how did Dharma arise in the world? Generally, how did Dharma arise in the world? The fourth general topic: How the Dharma to be accomplished arises is twofold: generally, how Dharma arose in the world; and particularly, how it arose in Tibet. Firstly, in general, when Bodhisattvas accumulate merit or fulfill aspirations, Buddha-fields are purified, and the roots of virtue of those to be tamed ripen, Buddhas appear and teach the sacred Dharma. This has three aspects: generally, in which kalpa do Buddhas appear; particularly, how do the Buddhas of the Fortunate Kalpa appear; and particularly, how does Shakyamuni appear in the Sahā world. Firstly, in general, kalpas are of two types: bright kalpas and dark kalpas. Buddhas appear in bright kalpas, but not in dark kalpas. In the bright kalpa, the Fortunate Kalpa, a thousand or one thousand and five Buddhas appear. Then there are dark kalpas, sixty great kalpas. Then there is a bright kalpa, the Great Pleasant Kalpa, in which ten thousand Buddhas appear. Then, after ten thousand dark kalpas, there is a bright kalpa called the Star-like Kalpa, in which eighty thousand Buddhas appear. Then there are three hundred dark kalpas. Then, in the bright kalpa of Qualities Arrayed, eighty-four thousand Buddhas appear, as stated in the Fortunate Kalpa Sutra. The second point is twofold: following the White Lotus of Compassion Sutra, one thousand and five Buddhas appear; and following the Secret Inconceivable Sutra, one thousand Buddhas appear. Firstly: In the past, in this world-system, there was a kalpa called the Great Holding Kalpa. In this four-continent world, there arose a wheel-turning king named Ribs-kyi Mu-khyud (Spoked Circumference). He had a thousand sons, including Prince Mig mi dzum pa (Unblinking Eye), and eighty-four thousand minor kings. Before him was a Brahmin named Gya-mtsho'i Rdul (Ocean Dust), the chief of the guides, with eighty sons and a thousand Brahmin disciples. His son, a Brahmin named Gya-mtsho'i Nying-po (Essence of the Ocean), attained perfect enlightenment and became known as the Buddha Rinchen Nying-po (Precious Essence). Then, the wheel-turning king Ribs-kyi Mu-khyud served the Buddha for three months.

It is done. Then, his sons, a thousand princes, made offerings every three months, and two hundred and fifty years and three months passed. The father, the Brahmin Sea Dust, made offerings for seven years. After listening to the Dharma, he interpreted a dream: the king was eating many beings with a circle of ribs, and fierce beasts such as tigers would also kill the king, and some ministers were riding comfortable chariots but going astray, and so on. After reporting to the Buddha, the Buddha prophesied that the king, attached to the kingdom and practicing unwholesome deeds, would be destined for evil realms and samsara. Those ministers would be prophesied as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Many others would attain great Bodhi. Thus, the dream was prophesied. Then, the Brahmin Sea Dust said to the king: Great King, it is difficult to be born as a human being, it is difficult for a Buddha to appear in the world, and it is difficult to hear the sacred Dharma, so please generate the unsurpassed Bodhicitta! After being urged in this way, the king said: I do not wish to attain unsurpassed Bodhi and become a Buddha. Saying this with reason, he was unwilling to generate Bodhicitta. The Brahmin urged him two or three times, and the king agreed, saying: If a good Buddha-field appears, I will generate it. Then, the Buddha Precious Heart entered the Samadhi called "Mirror Arrangement" and showed the inconceivable arrangement of the Buddha-fields, allowing the king to choose the good one. The king also developed faith and, in order to take his own Buddha-field, entered the chamber, cut off contact with the people, and began to contemplate. His thousand princes also entered their houses to contemplate in order to take their own Buddha-fields. During this time, the Brahmin Sea Dust guided many beings to perform great virtuous deeds. After seven years had passed, the king and his retinue were urged by the gods and arose, and in front of the Buddha, they took their own Buddha-fields and generated Bodhicitta. The great king was prophesied to become the Buddha Amitabha in the world of Sukhavati. The eldest son, Unblinking Eye, after Amitabha Buddha passed into Nirvana, manifested enlightenment at dawn when the Dharma was declining at night.
