Speaking coarse words that exceed the limit is called conjunction. Speaking in accordance is to prophesy in the same way, starting from answering questions and making predictions on a single topic, and so on. To counteract the fault of speech not being understood, there are three remedies: to make those with faith happy, to satisfy those who are already present and resentful, and to gratify those who are in between and doubtful. To counteract the fault of speech not becoming an offering, there are two remedies: not to arouse the interest of those who engage in sinful actions, as they are not worthy of arousing interest; and not to criticize, as criticism will hurt their feelings. To counteract the fault of speaking without valid meaning, there is logic, which is not contradictory to प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition). To counteract the fault of speaking profound meanings to inferior faculties who are not the object of profound practice, there is connection, which is the connection between what comes before and after. To counteract the fault of speaking while distracted, there is non-mixture, which is abandoning digressions into other topics. To counteract the fault of speaking meaningless things, there is being endowed with Dharma, which is being in accordance with virtue. To counteract the fault of speaking inappropriately, there is knowing the retinue as it is, which is being suitable for the disciples to be trained. To counteract the fault of speaking with an afflicted mind, there are the remaining five remedies. Afflicted minds are of three types: the thought of believing oneself to be good, the thought of wanting to be respected out of faith, and the thought of jealousy. The remedies for the first are three: the mind of loving-kindness, the mind of benefiting, and the mind of compassion. Are these three the wishes for the listener to have happiness, freedom from affliction, and freedom from suffering? Or, are loving-kindness, etc., in order, for those inclined towards virtue and non-virtue, and for ordinary people? Or, are they the thoughts of attaining nirvana, realizing its path, and understanding the meaning of what is being said? The remedy for the second is not relying on gain, respect, and praise, which is abandoning the desire for them. The remedy for the third is not praising oneself and not criticizing others, which is abandoning jealousy and the desire to be believed in more than others. These twenty, in order of five each, are in four

Furthermore, to be skilled in explaining means to be able to demonstrate the application of speech, the function of speech, the merits of speech, and the qualities of the speaker, and to be free from faults. Third, because one is worthy of respect by all due to the virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, one must be skilled in one's own conduct, and also skilled in the conduct of those to be tamed, that is, to understand their faculties, realms, and latent tendencies, so that teaching the Dharma in accordance with them will be meaningful. In the "Earth Store Ten Wheels Sutra," it says: "Children are weak in faculties and lazy, and do not diligently practice the two vehicles, they will not possess the wheel of the Great Vehicle, this is not a vessel for the vast Great Vehicle." Or, similarly, those of the Hearer Vehicle who are not vessels, after hearing the explanation of the Great Vehicle, will become confused, will fall into nihilistic views and fall into evil destinies, therefore, one must examine the faculties and then teach the Dharma. It also says: "Do not apply the vast Dharma to inferior Dharma." And it says: "To the inferior, profound and vast." Therefore, one must be skilled in the conduct or characteristics of the vessel.
