Second, the difference in the way the teacher explains. Second, the difference in the way the teacher explains. The second point is divided into three parts: who explains, that is, the characteristics of the teacher; the method of explaining based on what; and how to explain. First, different scriptures have many different explanations of the characteristics of the teacher. The "Three Hundred Verses" says: "Possessing discipline and knowing the rituals of taming, compassionate to the sick, retinue with faith, diligent in benefiting Dharma and wealth, admonishing in time, such a person is praised as a lama." The teacher Nagarjuna said: "For these characteristics of the virtuous friend, please understand briefly. Contentment, compassion, possessing discipline, having the wisdom to eliminate afflictions. If you rely on these people, you should understand with respect." Shantideva said: "The constant virtuous friend is skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle." Chandra Gomi said: "The lama abides in vows and is skilled, one should rely on the capable." The Ornament of the Sutras says: "The virtuous friend is tamed, peaceful, extremely peaceful, surpassing in qualities, diligent, rich in scriptures, thoroughly understanding reality, skilled in speech, possessing love, abandoning weariness, rely on him." That is, tamed by possessing discipline, peaceful by possessing samadhi, extremely peaceful by possessing wisdom and eliminating afflictions, surpassing by surpassing others in qualities, possessing diligence by being without laziness in benefiting others, rich in scriptures by being widely learned, thoroughly understanding the reality of what is to be known, and skilled in speech, possessing love by not being greedy for wealth, and without weariness in teaching the Dharma. This is possessing ten qualities. As the Bodhisattva Bhumi Sutra says: "The Bodhisattva is widely learned, sees the truth, speaks well, has compassion, is without weariness, is called a great being." That is, the merit of teaching is wide learning, the merit of realization is seeing the truth, skilled in speech, the mind is not greedy for wealth and has compassion, body, speech, and mind are without laziness and without weariness, this is possessing five qualities. As it says: "Vast, dispelling doubts, showing the two truths according to the occasion, this is called the Bodhisattva's perfect speaker." That is, because of wide learning, hearing the Dharma is vast, because of great wisdom, dispelling the doubts of those to be tamed.

One who is worthy to be regarded as a lama due to the three doors of virtue, explains the suchness of both afflictions and purification, that is, one who possesses the four qualities. Although these are mostly the qualities of noble ones, and one is happy to possess them, the necessary limbs that are indispensable are three: the wisdom of the learned, the thought of love, and the practice endowed with patience. The first has three aspects: being skilled in what is to be explained, being skilled in explaining, and being skilled in conduct. The first is: even if one is skilled in all that is to be known or in all the collections of teachings, here one needs to be skilled in the meaning of the words of what is being explained, and endowed with scriptural authority, reasoning, and pith instructions, because he is able to cut off the doubts of those to be tamed. The second is: explaining with three aspects: the expression of words is clear, whatever is said is related, however much is said is appropriate, and however it is said is reasonable. And a pleasant voice that can please others. Or, as the Ornament of the Sutras says: "Words are extremely reasonable, they teach, distinguish, and cut off doubts, and are endowed with the ability not to refute, for the beginning, statement, elaboration, and understanding. The teachings of the Buddhas are purified by the three wheels. It should be known that this is free from the eight faults. Laziness and not understanding, not distinguishing the occasion and uncertainty, doubts are not cut off, and one does not teach what is separate from this, weariness and stinginess, these are considered faults of speech. Because these are absent, the Buddha's explanation becomes supreme." Thus, the explanation that is pure in the three wheels is free from the eight faults of speech, or in the "Explanation of Reasoning," in order to counteract the eleven faults of expression, it is said that the Dharma talk is endowed with twenty aspects. Because one sits with unpleasant conduct, speaking to a non-receptacle, as a remedy for the fault of expression, is the desire to listen itself, and speaking after knowing that one is a suitable object for explanation, that is, speaking at the right time. My own speaking and listening are like this, because they do not possess these, they are meaningless, and I have not seen them as being on the path. As a remedy for the fault of incomplete expression, one speaks with un-disparaging diligence. As a remedy for the fault of interrupted expression, there are three: speaking in order, that is, doing generosity and so on before the time, and speaking starting from the words of correct offering, that is, teaching. Starting from the "Sutra - Explanation"
