That is, all the teachings of the Mahayana are summarized into five meanings to explain. Like gold being hammered, and like a lotus blooming. Like a hungry person enjoying exquisite food, and like hearing good news, opening a treasure box. Explaining this Dharma here can also generate great joy. This is the meaning to be expressed. In the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," "extreme" refers to the views of existence or non-existence, or annihilation. "Middle" refers to the Middle Way that abandons these views. Distinguishing these, therefore, it is called "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes." That is, through the nature, obscuration, antidote, practice, its location, and obtaining the result, it is the unsurpassed Mahayana. This is explained with seven meanings. In the "Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata," "Dharma" refers to all the defiled Dharmas of Samsara. "Dharmata" refers to the Dharma of Nirvana, explaining the difference between these two, therefore it is called "Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata." The "Uttaratantra Shastra" is the lineage of the Mahayana, or the root of the continuously existing Dharmas, because it is above all Dharmas, it is called that. Or, Uttara (Sanskrit) means later, explaining the later intent of the Mahayana, so it is called that. That is, it explains the seven aspects of the Three Jewels and their nature, the fruit of Bodhi, the sixty-four qualities of the Buddha, and the activities. Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, nature and Bodhi, qualities, Buddha, activities are the last. In short, the essence of all treatises is these seven Vajra places. In addition to the "Ornament for Clear Realization," it is the Five Dharmas of Maitreya. Afterwards, following the extensive treatises "Five Treatises on the Grounds" composed by the venerable Asanga, and the condensed treatises "Compendium of Determinations," and the eight "Treatise Matters" composed by Vasubandhu, and so on. Among them, the "Five Treatises on the Grounds" are like the root, and the main text of the grounds is explained after being summarized from the seventeen grounds. In summary: the place with five consciousnesses, the place of mind and the other three, having investigation and analysis, having and not having Samadhi, having mind and not having mind, having hearing, thinking and meditation, similarly having the three vehicles, having aggregates and not having aggregates, and so on.

The seventeen are also explained by making them subject to the three aspects of support, examination, and result. Among these, there are three: the ground of the five consciousnesses and the ground of mind are the nature of support. The ground with examination and investigation, the ground without examination but with investigation, and the ground without examination and without investigation; these three are the ways of entering the support. The ground with or without meditative equipoise, and the ground with or without mind; these four are the stages of the support. In terms of conduct, there are the three grounds of hearing, contemplation, and meditation. In terms of result, there are the temporary results, namely the ground of the Hearer, the ground of the Bodhisattva, and the ground of the Solitary Realizer. The ultimate result is with remainder and without remainder. Like its commentary, it is a collection of definitive analyses, that is, both the words and meanings of the essence of the ground are definitively analyzed in terms of the four possibilities, etc. Except for the ground of the Solitary Realizer, there is definitive analysis of the collection. These two explain the meaning of all the scriptures. The collection of the basis is the way in which those previous treatises are collected into the three baskets. In the brief explanation here, it is mentioned that all three baskets are collected, but in the detailed explanation, only the collection of the Sutra Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka are explained, and the collection of the Matrika is not explained separately because the collection of the Matrika is the five sections of the ground itself. In the collection of the definitive analysis of the ground of hearing, the collection of the Matrika is the seventeen grounds and the four collections. This is because it appears in this way. The collection of categories is the explanation of the categories of expressive names, or the detailed explanation of the categories of defilement and purification. These two are the treatises. The collection of the doors of explanation is the way of showing how to explain these. Thus, due to the meaning of the scriptures, the treatises, and the way of explanation, there are the five sections of the ground. The summary of the two types, the summary of the common vehicle, the Abhidharma-samuccaya, is explained by summarizing it into five aspects: the collection of characteristics, the determination of truth, the determination of dharma, the determination of attainment, and the determination of discourse. The summary of the Great Vehicle, the Mahāyāna-samgraha, is explained by summarizing the Great Vehicle in terms of ten aspects, such as the place of knowledge. The eight treatises of Vasubandhu are: the Thirty Verses, which explain that all phenomena are only mind; the Twenty Verses, which establish this view with reasoning; the Five Skandhas, which explain that its basis, the five skandhas, are reasonable; the Explanation of Relationship, which explains that even so, speaking and listening are reasonable; and the explanation that the actions of the three doors are reasonable.
