Separately introduce them. Separately introduce them. The reality of the two truths, the basis of all. Third, separating and individually introducing is divided into four parts: the reality of the two truths as the basis of all, separating the appearances of the two, introducing the alaya consciousness, and introducing the alaya wisdom. First, the reality of the two truths as the basis of all is: the nature of the two truths is neither the same nor different, but rather a difference that prevents the essence from being one. As it is said in the Sutra of Explaining the Thought, "The aggregates and the nature of ultimate reality are of a nature that is free from oneness and difference. Those who conceive of oneness and difference are not truly (pervasive)." And in the Differentiation of Dharma and Dharmata, it says, "These two are one, and they are not separate. The difference between existence and non-existence is due to existence and non-existence." The meaning is that the two truths are not one, because there is the difference that the ultimate truth exists in the ultimate truth, and the conventional truth does not exist; nor are they different, because in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth itself does not have the difference of grasping and attachment to the conventional truth. In this way, the way the two truths are mixed and abide is: just like milk and butter are mixed, mud and water are mixed, water and the cold and heat of water are mixed, and water and milk are mixed. As it is said in the Praise of Dharmadhatu, "Just as when mixed with milk, the essence of butter does not appear, so when mixed with afflictions, the dharmadhatu is not seen. Just as when milk is purified, the essence of butter becomes stainless, so when afflictions are purified, the dharmadhatu becomes extremely stainless." And "Just as water dwelling in the earth dwells without stain, so wisdom dwelling in afflictions dwells without stain." And "Just as in the summer season, water is said to be warm, so in the cold season, it is said to be cold. When covered by the net of afflictions, it is said to be sentient beings, but when it is free from afflictions, it is said to be Buddha." And "Just as when milk and water are mixed and dwell in one vessel, the swan drinks the milk and does not drink the water, so it dwells.

Thus, being covered by afflictions, although wisdom and this body exist together, yogis take wisdom, while the ignorant discard it. This means that in the present body, wisdom and ignorance exist together. The way consciousness obscures wisdom is like earth and stones obscuring a treasure, or a vase obscuring the lamp inside the vase. Such obscurations are explained with many examples in the Essence Sutra, the Uttaratantra Shastra, and the Dharmadhatu Praise. Distinguishing the Ways They Appear Secondly, distinguishing the ways the two appear: Consciousness does not manifest the appearance of wisdom, and wisdom does not manifest the appearance of consciousness. Therefore, the appearances of the two cannot be the same. The appearance of consciousness is a mistaken appearance, an impure appearance, a reversed appearance, an ignorant appearance, a subject-object appearance, a proliferation appearance, an attachment-aversion appearance, a false appearance, a suffering appearance, and appearances of various kinds of hunger, thirst, poverty, and destitution. The appearance of wisdom, on the other hand, is an un-mistaken appearance, a pure appearance, an appearance of great truth, and a perfect appearance, which are appearances opposite to those of consciousness. Regarding the appearance of consciousness, the Holy One says: 'Mistaking existence for non-existence and mistaking impermanence for permanence, mistaking non-existence for existence and mistaking permanence for permanence. Delusion deceives delusion, and because it is deceived, delusion is accomplished. Because of delusion, sentient beings are confused about the true meaning. Confused about the cause, they are confused about the result in the three lower realms.' And so on. The conventional appearance of consciousness does not appear to wisdom. In the Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses, it says: 'That which is called like a dream is like the things seen in a dream that do not appear in that way when one awakens from sleep. Similarly, the imputed phenomena such as the five aggregates of appropriation also appear when one is deluded by the sleep of ignorance, but when ignorance is awakened and the wisdom of the noble ones is attained, they do not appear in that way.' And so on. To the wisdom that awakens from the sleep of ignorance, the appearance of ignorance and consciousness does not appear at all. Aryadeva, quoting Nagarjuna, says: 'When the eye is free from cataracts.'
