The Clear Illumination of the Stages of the Path The Clear Illumination of the Stages of the Path I prostrate and take refuge in all the venerable gurus and the assembly of yidam deities! In general, all the teachings spoken by all the Buddhas can be summarized into three: the ground, the path, and the fruit. The first is the element, also called naturally pure nature; also called the Sugata-garbha; also called the alaya. When it is not realized, it appears as the basis of the suffering of samsara; when it is realized, it appears as nirvana. As it says in the tantra: The realm of beginningless time is the abode of all phenomena; because of this, all beings will attain nirvana. Furthermore, it says in another tantra: This self-knowing, self-illuminating, uninterrupted [awareness] is the basis and life-force of all; the habitual imprints of grasping appear as the name alaya. Also, in the King of Samadhi Sutra, it says: The Sugata-garbha pervades all beings. There are three paths: those who seek the path, those who enter the path, and those who enter the great path. Those who seek the path are the non-Buddhist tirthikas; those who enter the path are the Hearers Vehicle; those who enter the great path are the Resultant Vajra Vehicle. The great teacher Ashvaghosa also said: Seeking entry to the path, entering the path, and entering the great path. Specifically, there are two ways in which Buddhist practitioners progress on the path: the common path and the special path. The common path is the combination of the five paths with the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. The five paths are: the path of accumulation, the path of preparation, the path of seeing, the path of meditation, and the path of no more learning. Among these, the paths of accumulation and preparation are worldly paths because the truth has not been seen. The three paths of seeing, meditation, and no more learning are called transcendental paths because the meaning of the nature of reality has been directly realized. If these five paths are combined with the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, then the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, and the four legs of miraculous power, these twelve dharmas are the dharmas of the path of accumulation. The five faculties and the five powers, these ten are

These are the teachings of the path of application. Below that is the worldly path. The transcendental path is combined with the seven branches of enlightenment of the path of seeing, and the eightfold noble path is combined with the path of meditation. Thus, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are perfected, which is called the path of perfection or the path of no more learning, that is, the perfection of qualities such as strength and fearlessness. Among them, these three transcendental paths are considered the ten bhumis. These ten bhumis are combined with the ten perfections. For hundreds of thousands of qualities of the bhumis, please refer to the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis. There are two differences: the view with signs and the view without signs. Regarding the view with signs, Lord Virupa considers the union of samsara and nirvana to be the worldly path, and the separation of samsara and nirvana to be the transcendental path, or the path included in heat, or the path included in signs, or the path of entering into wisdom, or the path of entering into conceptualization. In short, there are two paths: the worldly path and the transcendental path. Among them, the general establishment of the path is: there are three ways of guiding the path and two ways of traversing it. The first is the guidance of the wind path, the guidance of the nectar element, and the guidance of the letter channel. The first of these is below the worldly path. For the first aggregate of elements, there is the guidance of the wind path that brings harm; for the middle one, there is the guidance of the wind path that is neither beneficial nor harmful; for the last one, there is the guidance of the wind path that brings benefit, thus cutting off the worldly path. Then, on the transcendental path, there is the guidance of the uncontaminated wind path. Then, there is the guidance of the wind path of the five faculties. Then, there is the guidance of the wind path of the five powers. Then, there is the guidance of the wind path in which life and effort are completely absorbed. Then, the movement of the wind is absorbed and transformed into pure wisdom wind. Secondly, regarding the guidance of the nectar element, for the first aggregate of elements, there is the guidance of the element that does not distinguish between pure and impure; for the middle one, there is the guidance of the slightly pure element; for the last one, there is the guidance of the mostly pure element, thus cutting off the worldly path. Then, on the transcendental path, there is the guidance of the pure element. Then, there is the guidance of the essence of nectar. Then, there is the guidance of the great pure element.
