Venerable Sir, the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan alone obstructed two. Venerable Sir, in that matter it was laid down. Question – Friend, for a junior monk who is teaching, to sit on an equal seat or a higher one, out of respect for the Dhamma; but for an elder monk who is being taught, to sit on an equal seat or a lower one, out of respect for the Dhamma— where was this allowed by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter was it allowed? Answer – Venerable Sir, in Sāvatthī, it was allowed concerning many monks. Venerable Sir, many monks learned the Vinaya in the presence of the Venerable Upāli. Venerable Sir, the Venerable Upāli taught while standing, out of respect for the elder monks. There, Venerable Sir, both the elder monks became tired, and the Venerable Upāli became tired. Venerable Sir, in that matter it was allowed. Question – Friend, with a three-year interval, to sit together— where was this allowed by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter was it allowed? Response – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, it was permitted. To many bhikkhus, venerable sir, it occurred: "How far, indeed, is one of the same seat?" In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – On couches, friend, and on chairs, for only two to sit, where was it permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it permitted? Response – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many of the same seat, it was laid down. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, of the same seat, having sat on couches, broke the couches. Having sat on chairs, broke the chairs. In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – But on long seats, friend, even with those not of the same seat, to sit, where was it permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it permitted? Response – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, it was permitted. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, were scrupulous about sitting on long seats with those not of the same seat. In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – Five things, friend, not to be given away, where were they laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, were they laid down? Response – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, they were laid down. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, gave away communal lodging. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Five things, friend, not to be divided, where were they laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, were they laid down? Response – In Kīṭāgiri, venerable sir, concerning the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu, they were laid down. The bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu, venerable sir, divided communal lodging. In that matter, venerable sir, they were laid down. Question – Apart from use, friend, for one who uses it for other purposes, a wrong-doing, where was it laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Response – In Āḷavī, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, was laid down, Venerable sirs, many monks used the lodging that was the property of a certain lay follower elsewhere. Venerable sirs, it was laid down on account of that matter. Question: Where, friends, was it laid down by the Blessed One that there is a dukkaṭa offense for one who steps on a lodging with unwashed and wet feet, and for one who steps on a lodging with sandals on? Concerning whom, and on account of what matter, was it laid down? Answer: Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning many monks in Āḷavī. Venerable sirs, many monks stepped on the lodging with unwashed feet, and stepped on the lodging with wet feet, and also stepped on the lodging with sandals on, and the lodging was soiled. Venerable sirs, it was laid down on account of that matter. Question: Where, friends, was it laid down by the Blessed One that there is a dukkaṭa offense for one who spits on a prepared floor, and for one who leans on a prepared wall? Concerning whom, and on account of what matter, was it laid down? Answer: Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning many monks in Āḷavī. Venerable sirs, many monks spat on a prepared floor, and leaned on a prepared wall. Venerable sirs, it was laid down on account of that matter. Question: I will ask about the Chapter on Lodgings, with its origin and its explanation. Friends, how many offenses are there in the sections on extreme cases? Answer: I will answer about the Chapter on Lodgings, with its origin and its explanation. Venerable sirs, there are three offenses in the sections on extreme cases. 7. Chapter on the Sanghāṭeda Question: Friends, how did the ordination of the six Sakyan princes together with Upāli the barber come about? And how did a distinction arise among them? Answer: Venerable sirs, the Blessed One first ordained Upāli the barber, and afterwards those Sakyan princes. Then, venerable sirs, Venerable Bhaddiya in that very rainy season realized the three knowledges. Venerable Anuruddha developed the divine eye. Venerable Ānanda realized the fruit of stream-entry. Devadatta attained mundane psychic power. they went forth. Thus, Venerable Sir, was the going forth of the six Sakyan princes with Upāli the barber, and thus, Venerable Sir, was their special attainment. Proclamation Question – Where, friend, was the act of proclamation enjoined by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it enjoined? Answer – In Rājagaha, Venerable Sir, concerning Devadatta, it was enjoined. Devadatta, Venerable Sir, was angry and displeased, thinking, “The Blessed One disparages me with a spittle-word in the royal assembly, and exalts only Sāriputta and Moggallāna.” He bore ill-will towards the Blessed One. In that matter, Venerable Sir, it was enjoined. Proclamation Question – Having caused the act of proclamation for Devadatta, friend, how did the Blessed One command it to be proclaimed? Answer – The Blessed One, Venerable Sir, having enjoined the act of proclamation for Devadatta, addressed Venerable Sāriputta: “Therefore, Sāriputta, proclaim Devadatta in Rājagaha.” Thus, Venerable Sir, having performed the act of proclamation for Devadatta, the Blessed One commanded Devadatta to be proclaimed in Rājagaha. Devadatta Question – How, friend, did Devadatta, with a wicked mind, with a murderous mind, accumulate the first act of immediate retribution by causing blood to flow from the Tathāgata? Answer – The Blessed One, Venerable Sir, was walking in the shade of Gijjhakūṭa mountain. Then, Venerable Sir, Devadatta climbed Gijjhakūṭa mountain and hurled a large rock, thinking, “With this, I will deprive the recluse Gotama of life.” Then, Venerable Sir, two mountain peaks came together and intercepted that rock. From that, a splinter flew up and caused blood to flow from the Blessed One’s foot. Thus, Venerable Sir, did Devadatta, with a wicked mind, with a murderous mind, accumulate the first act of immediate retribution by causing blood to flow from the Tathāgata. Question – Where, friend, was the triple meal in families enjoined by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it enjoined? Answer – In Rājagaha, Venerable Sir, enacted concerning Devadatta. Devadatta, venerable sir, having lost gain and honor, with his retinue, begged for food in families and ate it. Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was enacted. Question: "Enough, Devadatta, may you not delight in schism, grievous indeed, Devadatta, is schism," venerable sir, where was this advice given by the Blessed One? Concerning what matter was it given? Answer: In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was given concerning Devadatta. Devadatta, venerable sir, strove for schism, for breaking the community. Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was given. "Enough, Devadatta, may you not delight in schism, grievous indeed, Devadatta, is schism." Question: "Easy is good by the good, good by the evil is difficult. Easy is evil by the evil, evil by the noble is difficult." Venerable sir, where was this solemn utterance uttered by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, concerning what matter, was it uttered? Answer: In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was uttered concerning Devadatta himself. Venerable Ānanda, venerable sir, having dressed in the morning, taking his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms. Then, venerable sir, Devadatta approached Venerable Ānanda. Having approached, he said to Venerable Ānanda: "From today onwards, venerable Ānanda, I shall perform the Uposatha and perform acts of the Sangha apart from the Blessed One, apart from the community of bhikkhus." Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was uttered. Easy is good by the good, good by the evil is difficult; Easy is evil by the evil, evil by the noble is difficult. Question: Venerable sir, where was the grave offense for bhikkhus who follow schism enacted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, concerning what matter, was it enacted? Answer: In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was enacted concerning many bhikkhus. Venerable Sāriputta, venerable sir, approached the Blessed One and said: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the bhikkhus who follow schism were to be re-ordained." Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was enacted. "It would be good, venerable sir, if the bhikkhus who follow schism Monks who have fallen away should re-ordain again. Question: How far, friend, is there a schism-line in the Sangha, but not a schism? And how far, is there both a schism-line and a schism? Answer: On one side, venerable sir, there is one; on the other side, two. A fourth makes the announcement, takes the voting sticks, "This is the Dhamma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's Dispensation. Take this, approve this."
