a pair of thirty-three in functional (consciousness); Thirty-three in resultant (consciousness), thirty-two, a pair of thirty-one may be; In root-conditioned sensuous meritorious, resultant, and functional minds. 42. Abstinence is not found here, in functional and exalted (consciousness). Immeasurables in supramundane (consciousness), and a pair in sensuous resultant (consciousness) likewise; Jhana factors in supramundane (consciousness), and immeasurables in the middle (consciousness); Abstinence, wisdom, and joy are special in the minor (consciousness). Method of inclusion of unwholesome consciousness 43. Now, among unwholesome (consciousness), in the first unprompted greed-rooted (consciousness), thirteen universal mental factors, and four unwholesome common (factors), thus seventeen, together with greed and wrong view, nineteen phenomena are included. 44. Likewise in the second unprompted (consciousness), with greed and conceit. 45. In the third, likewise, excluding joy, with greed and wrong view, eighteen. 46. In the fourth, likewise, with greed and conceit. 47. But in the fifth unprompted (consciousness) associated with aversion, aversion, envy, avarice, and remorse, these four, together with those (factors) excluding joy, twenty phenomena are included. Envy, avarice, and remorse here should be applied individually. 48. In the five prompted (consciousness) too, they should be applied likewise, distinguished by sloth and torpor. 49. But eleven universal mental factors, excluding intention and joy, and four unwholesome common (factors), thus fifteen phenomena, are associated with restlessness-accompanied (consciousness). 50. And in doubt-accompanied consciousness, excluding decision, doubt-accompanied, likewise fifteen phenomena are found. Thus, in all twelve unwholesome consciousness-arisings, even when applied individually, by way of enumeration, they are included in seven ways. 51. Nineteen, eight Eighteen, twenty-one, twenty. Twenty-two, fifteen, established in wholesome in seven ways. 52. And four common ones, and ten others similar. These fourteen are said to be associated with all unwholesome. Method of Collecting Rootless Consciousnesses 53. Among the rootless, in the smiling consciousness, indeed, twelve other common states, excluding desire, are included. 54. Similarly, in the determining consciousness, excluding desire and joy. 55. In the investigating consciousness accompanied by joy, excluding desire and effort. 56. In the triad of mind-element and the two rootless rebirth-linking consciousnesses, excluding desire, joy, and effort. 57. In the ten sense-consciousnesses, excluding the miscellaneous ones, those very ones are included. Thus, in all eighteen rootless ones, the collection is in four ways by enumeration. 58. Twelve, eleven, ten, and seven, thus fourfold. In the eighteen rootless, in the consciousnesses, is the collection. 59. In all rootless ones, seven remain as appropriate. Thus, in detail, is said the thirty-three-fold collection. 60. Thus, of those disjoined from consciousness, their association and collection. Having known the distinction as appropriate, one should declare it with consciousness. Thus, in the Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha, the section named the Collection of Mental Factors, the Second Chapter. 3. Chapter on Miscellaneous Topics 1. Associated as appropriate, fifty-three by nature. Consciousness and mental factors are states, of these, now, as appropriate. 2. From feeling, root, function, door, object, and base. Indeed, by way of the arising of consciousness, the collection is led. Collection of Feelings 3. Therein, in the collection of feelings, indeed, feeling is threefold: pleasure, pain, and neither painful nor pleasant. But by distinction, it is fivefold: pleasure, pain, joy, displeasure, and equanimity. 4. Therein, only one body-consciousness accompanied by pleasure, wholesome resultant; similarly, one accompanied by pain, unwholesome resultant. 5. But consciousnesses accompanied by joy are four rooted in greed, twelve beautiful sense-sphere ones, and two investigating consciousnesses accompanied by joy and smiling consciousnesses. Thus, eighteen sense-sphere consciousnesses accompanied by joy, and the first, second, third, and fourth jhana-associated... (The remaining) forty-four exalted and supramundane consciousnesses are thus sixty-two kinds. 6. Consciousnesses accompanied by displeasure, moreover, are just the two consciousnesses associated with aversion. 7. All the remaining fifty-five are just consciousnesses accompanied by equanimity. 8. Happiness, suffering, and equanimity, thus, are three kinds of feeling there. Joy and displeasure, by these divisions, are fivefold. 9. Happiness in one, and suffering, displeasure is found in two. Joy in sixty-two, the other in fifty-five. Compendium of Roots 10. In the Compendium of Roots, roots, namely, greed, hatred, delusion, non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion, thus are six kinds. 11. Therein, by way of the five-door adverting, the two five-sense consciousnesses, receiving, investigating, determining, and smiling, are called rootless consciousnesses. 12. All the remaining seventy-one consciousnesses are just with roots. 13. Even among those, the two deluded consciousnesses are one-rooted. 14. The remaining ten unwholesome consciousnesses, and the twelve beautiful sense-sphere consciousnesses dissociated from knowledge, thus are twenty-two two-rooted consciousnesses. 15. The twelve beautiful sense-sphere consciousnesses associated with knowledge, and the thirty-five exalted and supramundane consciousnesses, thus are forty-seven three-rooted consciousnesses. 16. Greed, hatred, and delusion, are the three unwholesome roots; Non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion, are wholesome and indeterminate, similarly. 17. Eighteen are rootless, two are one-rooted, twenty-two are considered two-rooted, forty-seven are three-rooted. Compendium of Functions 18. In the Compendium of Functions, functions, namely, rebirth-linking, life-continuum, adverting, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, receiving, investigating, determining, impulsion, registering, and death, by way of these, are fourteen kinds. 19. Moreover, by way of rebirth-linking, life-continuum, adverting, and the positions of the five-sense consciousnesses, etc., their tenfold division of positions should be understood. 20. Therein, the two investigating consciousnesses accompanied by equanimity, and the eight great resultant consciousnesses, and the nine form and formless resultant consciousnesses, thus these nineteen consciousnesses are called rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death functions. 21. Adverting functions, moreover, are two. . Also the functions of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and receiving. 23. Three functions of investigating. 24. The mind-door adverting alone performs the determining function in the five doors. 25. The fifty-five javana cittas, excluding the two adverting cittas, are the functional cittas of wholesome and unwholesome results. 26. The eight great resultant cittas and the three investigating cittas—these eleven are the functions of registration. 27. Among these, the two investigating cittas accompanied by equanimity are called the five functions: rebirth-linking, life-continuum, death, registration, and investigation. 28. The eight great resultant cittas are called the four functions: rebirth-linking, life-continuum, death, and registration. 29. The nine exalted resultant cittas are called the three functions: rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death. 30. The investigating citta accompanied by joy has two functions: investigation and registration. 31. Similarly, the determining citta has two functions: determining and adverting. 32. All the remaining javana cittas, the mind-element triad, and the two five-fold consciousnesses each have one function, as is possible. 33. Rebirth-linking and so on, by division of function, are fourteen. By division of station, they are declared as ten kinds of mind-arisings. 34. Sixty-eight, and two, nine, eight, and two, in order, Are designated as having one, two, three, four, and five functional stations. Compendium of Doors 35. In the Compendium of Doors, the doors are six kinds: eye-door, ear-door, nose-door, tongue-door, body-door, and mind-door. 36. There, the eye itself is the eye-door. 37. Similarly, the ear and so on are the ear-door and so forth. 38. The mind-door, however, is called the life-continuum. 39. There, forty-six cittas arise appropriately in the eye-door, by way of the five-door adverting, eye-consciousness, receiving, investigating, determining, sense-sphere javana, and registration. Similarly, forty-six arise in the ear-door and so on, by way of the five-door adverting, ear-consciousness and so forth. Thus, in all the five doors, fifty-four cittas are only sense-sphere. 40. In the mind-door, however, the mind-door adverting, fifty-five by way of apprehending objects, sixty-seven states of consciousness arise. 41. Nineteen are door-free, by way of rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death. 42. Among these, the fivefold consciousnesses, and the supramundane and exalted javanas, these thirty-six are called one-door consciousnesses, as appropriate. 43. The three mind-elements, however, are five-door. 44. The pleasant investigating consciousness, the determining consciousness, and the sense-sphere javanas are six-door consciousnesses. 45. The indifferent investigating consciousness and the great resultant consciousnesses are six-door and also door-free. 46. The exalted resultant consciousnesses are only door-free. 47. One-door consciousnesses, five and six-door ones, six-door and door-free, and door-free in every way. Thirty-six, then three, thirty-one in due order; Tenfold, ninefold, and fivefold, thus one should explain. Collection of Objects 48.
