The jhāna stream-entry path consciousnesses, and the fifth jhāna stream-entry path consciousness accompanied by equanimity and one-pointedness— these five are called stream-entry path consciousnesses. 39. Similarly, with once-returner path, non-returner path, and arahant path consciousnesses, there are exactly twenty path consciousnesses. 40. Similarly, with fruit consciousnesses, there are exactly forty supramundane consciousnesses. 41. By the distinction of the combination of jhāna factors, each one is made fivefold. Thus, the supramundane consciousness is said to be of forty kinds. 42. Just as the fine-material sphere, so is the supramundane understood. In the distinctions of the first jhāna and so on, and the immaterial sphere in the fifth. Therefore, the first and so on are said to be elevenfold; but each jhāna, in the end, becomes twenty-threefold. 43. Thirty-sevenfold are the meritorious, and fifty-twofold are the resultant, thus they say. The wise say the consciousnesses are one hundred and twenty-one. Thus, in the Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha, is the section called "Compendium of Consciousness," the First Chapter. 2. Chapter 2: Compendium of Mental Factors Characteristics of Association 1. Arising and ceasing together, having the same object and basis, associated with consciousness— fifty-two phenomena are known as mental factors. Mental Factors Common to Others 2. How? Contact, feeling, perception, volition, one-pointedness, life faculty, and attention— these seven mental factors are called universals for all consciousnesses. 3. Initial application, sustained application, decision, energy, joy, and desire-to-act— these six mental factors are called particulars. 4. Thus these thirteen mental factors are to be known as common to others. Unwholesome Mental Factors 5. Delusion, shamelessness, fearlessness of wrongdoing, restlessness, greed, wrong view, conceit, hatred, envy, avarice, remorse, sloth, torpor, and doubt— these fourteen mental factors are called unwholesome. Beautiful Mental Factors 6. Faith, mindfulness, moral shame, moral dread, non-greed, non-hatred, equanimity, tranquility of mental body, tranquility of consciousness, lightness of mental body, lightness of consciousness, pliancy of mental body, pliancy of consciousness, adaptability of mental body, adaptability of consciousness, proficiency of mental body, proficiency of consciousness, uprightness of mental body, and uprightness of consciousness— these nineteen mental factors are called universals for beautiful consciousnesses. Right speech, right action, right livelihood, these are called the three abstinences. Compassion, appreciative joy, and immeasurable states, these, together with the faculty of wisdom, are known as the twenty-five beautiful mental factors. Thus far – Thirteen other-common, and fourteen unwholesome ones, twenty-five beautiful ones, are said to be fifty-two. For these mental factors, inseparable from consciousness, their individual association with states of consciousness will now be explained. Seven are associated everywhere, the miscellaneous ones as appropriate. Fourteen with only unwholesome states, the beautiful ones with only beautiful states. How? First, these seven mental factors, common to all consciousness, are found in all eighty-nine states of consciousness. Among the miscellaneous ones, initial application arises in fifty-five states of consciousness: in sense-sphere consciousness excluding the ten sense-cognitions, and in the eleven first jhāna states of consciousness. Sustained application, however, arises in sixty-six states of consciousness: in those same states, and in the eleven second jhāna states of consciousness. Decision arises in states of consciousness excluding the ten sense-cognitions and those accompanied by doubt. Energy arises in states of consciousness excluding the five-door adverting, the ten sense-cognitions, receiving, and investigating. Joy arises in states of consciousness excluding those accompanied by displeasure, equanimity, body-consciousness, and the fourth jhāna. Desire arises in states of consciousness excluding rootless and deluded states. Those states of consciousness, respectively – Sixty-six, fifty-five, eleven and sixteen; seventy and twenty, are devoid of miscellaneous factors. Fifty-five, sixty-six, seventy-eight, seventy-three; fifty-one and sixty-nine, are with miscellaneous factors. Among the unwholesome factors, delusion, shamelessness, fearlessness of wrongdoing, and restlessness – these four mental factors are called common to all unwholesome states, found in all twelve unwholesome states. Greed is found only in the eight states of consciousness accompanied by greed. Wrong view in the four associated with wrong view. Conceit Not in the four disconnected from wrong views. 24. Ill-will, envy, avarice, and remorse, in the two consciousnesses associated with aversion. 25. Sloth and torpor, in the five prompted consciousnesses. 26. Doubt, only in the consciousness accompanied by doubt. 27. In all unwholesome states, four; In the root of greed, three are found; In the roots of aversion, four; In the prompted, two likewise. Doubt, in the doubt-consciousness; Thus fourteen (factors); Only in the twelve unwholesome (consciousnesses), are associated in five ways. Method of Association of Beautiful Mental Factors 28. Among the beautiful (consciousnesses), the nineteen mental factors common to beautiful (consciousnesses), are indeed found in all fifty-nine beautiful consciousnesses. 29. The three abstinences, moreover, are certainly found as one in all supramundane consciousnesses; But in the mundane, only in the sense-sphere wholesome (consciousnesses), they sometimes appear individually. 30. The illimitables, moreover, in the twelve exalted consciousnesses excluding the fifth jhana, and in the sense-sphere wholesome (consciousnesses), and in the sense-sphere functional consciousnesses with roots, thus only in twenty-eight consciousnesses, sometimes arise separately; Some say that in those accompanied by equanimity, compassion and appreciative joy are not present. 31. Wisdom, moreover, in the twelve sense-sphere consciousnesses associated with knowledge, and in all thirty-five exalted and supramundane consciousnesses, thus in forty-seven consciousnesses, is associated. 32. Nineteen factors, arise in fifty-nine. Three in sixteen consciousnesses, in twenty-eight, two. Wisdom is declared, in forty-seven kinds. Thus associated in these four ways, the beautiful (factors) are only in the beautiful (consciousnesses). 33. Envy, avarice, remorse, abstinences, compassion, and so on; Sometimes separately, and conceit, sloth and torpor, similarly together. 34. According to what has been said, the rest are of fixed association. And the compilation, I shall now declare appropriately. Method of Compilation 35. Thirty-six factors, in the supramundane; Thirty-five in the exalted. Even thirty-eight are found, in the sense-sphere beautiful (consciousnesses). In the twenty-seven wholesome, and twelve rootless; As By way of non-occurrence, there is a fivefold collection. Method of Collecting Supramundane Consciousnesses 36. How? First, in the eight supramundane first-jhāna consciousnesses, thirteen universal mental factors and twenty-three beautiful mental factors excluding the immeasurables, thus thirty-six phenomena are included. Similarly, in the second-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application; in the third-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application and sustained application; in the fourth-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application, sustained application, and rapture; and even in the fifth-jhāna consciousnesses, those same (factors) associated with equanimity are included. Thus, in all eight supramundane consciousnesses, the collection occurs in five ways according to the five jhānas. 37. Thirty-six and thirty-five, Thirty-four, in due order. And thirty-three twice, Thus, in five ways, in the supramundane. Method of Collecting Sublime Consciousnesses 38. Now, in the three sublime first-jhāna consciousnesses, thirteen universal mental factors and twenty-two beautiful mental factors excluding the three abstinences, thus thirty-five phenomena are included. Here, compassion and appreciative joy should be applied individually. Similarly, in the second-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application; in the third-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application and sustained application; in the fourth-jhāna consciousnesses, excluding initial application, sustained application, and rapture; but in the fifteen fifth-jhāna consciousnesses, the immeasurables are not found. Thus, in all twenty-seven sublime consciousnesses, the collection occurs in five ways according to the five jhānas. 39. Thirty-five, thirty-four, And thirty-three, in due order. And thirty-two and thirty, Thus, in five ways, in the sublime. Method of Collecting Sense-Sphere Beautiful Consciousnesses 40. Now, in the first pair of wholesome sense-sphere beautiful consciousnesses, thirteen universal mental factors and twenty-five beautiful mental factors, thus thirty-eight phenomena are included. Here, all five immeasurables and abstinences should be applied individually. Similarly, in the second pair, excluding wisdom; in the third pair, associated with wisdom but excluding rapture; in the fourth pair, excluding wisdom and rapture, those same... are included. And in functional consciousness, excluding abstinences, they are likewise included in the four pairs, in four ways. Similarly, in resultant consciousness, excluding immeasurables and abstinences, they are likewise included. Thus, in all twenty-four sensuous beautiful consciousnesses, by way of pairs, there are twelve ways of inclusion. 41. Thirty-eight, thirty-seven, a pair of thirty-six in beautiful (consciousness). Thirty-five, thirty-four,
