Homage to the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One Compendium of Abhidhamma Meanings Discourse on the Commencement of the Treatise 1. Having paid homage to the Peerless Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, and to the excellent True Dhamma and Saṅgha, I shall expound the Compendium of Abhidhamma Meanings. The Four Ultimate Realities 2. Therein, the Abhidhamma meanings declared are fourfold in ultimate reality: Consciousness, mental concomitants, matter, and Nibbāna, in every respect. 1. Chapter on Consciousness Consciousness according to Planes 3. Therein, consciousness is indeed fourfold: sense-sphere, fine-material-sphere, immaterial-sphere, and supramundane. Unwholesome Consciousness 4. Therein, what is sense-sphere consciousness? One accompanied by joy, associated with wrong view, unprompted; one accompanied by joy, associated with wrong view, prompted; one accompanied by joy, dissociated from wrong view, unprompted; one accompanied by joy, dissociated from wrong view, prompted; one accompanied by equanimity, associated with wrong view, unprompted; one accompanied by equanimity, associated with wrong view, prompted; one accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from wrong view, unprompted; one accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from wrong view, prompted— these eight are called consciousnesses rooted in greed. 5. One accompanied by displeasure, associated with aversion, unprompted; one accompanied by displeasure, associated with aversion, prompted— these two are called consciousnesses associated with aversion. 6. One accompanied by equanimity, associated with doubt; one accompanied by equanimity, associated with restlessness— these two are called consciousnesses rooted in delusion. 7. Thus, in all, the twelve unwholesome consciousnesses are completed. 8. Eightfold are those rooted in greed, and twofold are those rooted in aversion, and two are those rooted in delusion— thus there are twelve unwholesome [consciousnesses]. Rootless Consciousness 9. Eye-consciousness accompanied by equanimity, likewise ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness accompanied by pain, receiving consciousness accompanied by equanimity, investigating consciousness accompanied by equanimity— these seven are called unwholesome resultant consciousnesses. 10. Eye-consciousness, wholesome resultant, accompanied by equanimity, likewise ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness accompanied by pleasure The five sense consciousnesses, receiving consciousness accompanied by equanimity, investigating consciousness accompanied by joy, and investigating consciousness accompanied by equanimity— these eight are called rootless resultant wholesome consciousnesses. 11. Five-door adverting consciousness accompanied by equanimity, likewise, mind-door adverting consciousness, and smile-producing consciousness accompanied by joy— these three are called rootless functional consciousnesses. 12. Thus, in all, the eighteen rootless consciousnesses are completed. 13. Seven unwholesome resultants, wholesome resultants are eightfold. Functional consciousnesses are three, thus eighteen rootless. Beautiful Consciousness 14. Freed from unwholesome and rootless, they are called beautiful. Fifty-nine consciousnesses, or ninety-one. Beautiful Sense-Sphere Consciousness 15. One spontaneous, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge; and one prompted—these eight are called sense-sphere wholesome consciousnesses. 16. One spontaneous, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge; and one prompted—these eight are called root-conditioned sense-sphere resultant consciousnesses. 17. One spontaneous, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge; one prompted; one spontaneous, accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge; and one prompted—these eight are called root-conditioned sense-sphere functional consciousnesses. are called minds. 18. Thus, in all ways, the twenty-four root-accompanied sense-sphere wholesome, resultant, and functional minds are completed. 19. By way of feeling, knowledge, and formation, twenty-four root-accompanied sense-sphere wholesome, resultant, and functional (minds) are known. 20. In the sense-sphere, twenty-three resultants, twenty wholesome and unwholesome (minds), and eleven functional (minds)— fifty-four in all. Form-sphere Mind 21. First jhāna wholesome mind accompanied by initial application, sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Second jhāna wholesome mind accompanied by sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Third jhāna wholesome mind accompanied by rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Fourth jhāna wholesome mind accompanied by happiness and one-pointedness; and Fifth jhāna wholesome mind accompanied by equanimity and one-pointedness— these five are called form-sphere wholesome minds. 22. First jhāna resultant mind accompanied by initial application, sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Second jhāna resultant mind accompanied by sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Third jhāna resultant mind accompanied by rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Fourth jhāna resultant mind accompanied by happiness and one-pointedness; and Fifth jhāna resultant mind accompanied by equanimity and one-pointedness— these five are called form-sphere resultant minds. 23. First jhāna functional mind accompanied by initial application, sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Second jhāna functional mind accompanied by sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Third jhāna functional mind accompanied by rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness; Fourth jhāna functional mind accompanied by happiness and one-pointedness; and Fifth jhāna functional mind accompanied by equanimity and one-pointedness— these five are called form-sphere functional minds. 24. Thus, in all ways, the fifteen form-sphere wholesome, resultant, and functional minds are completed. 25. In five ways, by jhāna divisions, the form-sphere mind. By divisions of wholesome, resultant, and functional, it becomes fifteenfold. Formless-sphere Mind 26. Wholesome mind of the sphere of infinite space, wholesome mind of the sphere of infinite consciousness, wholesome mind of the sphere of nothingness, and wholesome mind of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception— these four are formless-sphere are called unwholesome consciousnesses. 27. The consciousness of the result of the sphere of infinite space, the consciousness of the result of the sphere of infinite consciousness, the consciousness of the result of the sphere of nothingness, and the consciousness of the result of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception— these four are called formless sphere resultant consciousnesses. 28. The functional consciousness of the sphere of infinite space, the functional consciousness of the sphere of infinite consciousness, the functional consciousness of the sphere of nothingness, and the functional consciousness of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception— these four are called formless sphere functional consciousnesses. 29. Thus, in all, the twelve formless sphere wholesome, resultant, and functional consciousnesses are completed. 30. The formless mind, divided into four by object, is again established as twelve, by wholesome, resultant, and functional distinctions. Supramundane Consciousness 31. The stream-entry path consciousness, the once-returner path consciousness, the non-returner path consciousness, and the Arahant path consciousness— these four are called supramundane wholesome consciousnesses. 32. The stream-entry fruition consciousness, the once-returner fruition consciousness, the non-returner fruition consciousness, and the Arahant fruition consciousness— these four are called supramundane resultant consciousnesses. 33. Thus, in all, the eight supramundane wholesome and resultant consciousnesses are completed. 34. Wholesome consciousness, divided into four by the four paths, and its result, the fruition, are considered eightfold as supramundane. Summary of Consciousness Count 35. Thus, twelve unwholesome, twenty-one wholesome, thirty-six resultant, and twenty functional consciousnesses. 36. Fifty-four in the sense sphere, fifteen are said to be in the form sphere, twelve consciousnesses in the formless sphere, and eight in the supramundane sphere. 37. Thus, the mind, ninety-ninefold, or even one hundred and twenty-one, is divided by the wise. Detailed Enumeration 38. How does the ninety-ninefold consciousness become one hundred and twenty-one? The stream-entry path consciousness associated with initial application, sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind in the first jhāna; the stream-entry path consciousness associated with sustained application, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind in the second jhāna; the stream-entry path consciousness associated with rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind in the third jhāna; the stream-entry path consciousness associated with happiness and one-pointedness of mind in the fourth jhāna;
