English

This is the method of the occurrence of thought-processes in the mind-door here. Tadārammaṇa-niyama 25. In all cases here, when the object is undesirable, only unwholesome vipāka are the pañcaviññāṇa, sampaṭicchana, santīraṇa, and tadārammaṇa. 26. When desirable, they are wholesome vipāka. 27. When very desirable, however, santīraṇa and tadārammaṇa are only accompanied by joy; even there, at the end of a functional javana accompanied by joy, tadārammaṇa are only accompanied by joy; and at the end of a functional javana accompanied by equanimity, they are accompanied by equanimity. 28. And at the end of a javana accompanied by displeasure, tadārammaṇa and bhavaṅga are only accompanied by equanimity. Therefore, if for one whose rebirth-linking is accompanied by joy, at the end of a javana accompanied by displeasure, tadāram If there is no rebirth-linking consciousness, then, whatever previously familiar minor object arises as an investigating consciousness accompanied by equanimity, immediately after that, it falls into the life-continuum – so say the teachers. 29. Similarly, at the end of sense-sphere impulsion, for beings in the sense-sphere, when sense-sphere phenomena are the objects, consequent apprehension is desired. 30. When there is a rule for impulsion and the seven objects in the sense-sphere, and when they are very clear and great, consequent apprehension is declared. This is the rule for consequent apprehension here. The Rule for Impulsions 31. And among impulsions, in a minor impulsion process, sense-sphere impulsions impel seven or six times. 32. But in slow occurrence, such as at the time of death, it is only five times. 33. But for the Blessed One, in swift occurrence, such as at the time of the Twin Miracle, there are four or five reviewing consciousnesses, so they say. 34. But for a beginner in the first meditation, exalted impulsions and supernormal knowledge impulsions always impel only once, after which there is a fall into the life-continuum. 35. But the four path-arisings are momentary, after which two or three fruition-consciousnesses arise appropriately, after which there is a fall into the life-continuum. 36. At the time of attainment of cessation, the fourth formless impulsion impels twice, after which it touches cessation. 37. And at the time of emergence, either the non-returner fruition or the arahant fruition, having arisen appropriately once and ceased, there is a fall into the life-continuum. 38. In all attainment processes, considering that there is no process rule like the stream of the life-continuum, many are obtained. 39. Minor ones are seven times, path and supernormal knowledge are considered once. The remaining impulsions are obtained many times. This is the rule for impulsions here. Distinction of Individuals 40. For those with two roots and those without roots, here, functional impulsions and absorption impulsions are obtained. 41. Similarly, resultant consciousnesses associated with knowledge are in a good destination. 42. But in a bad destination, resultant consciousnesses dissociated from knowledge and great resultant consciousnesses are not obtained. 43. And for Arahants with three roots, wholesome and unwholesome impulsion thoughts are not found. 44. Similarly, for trainees and ordinary folk, functional impulsion thoughts are not found. 45. And impulsion thoughts associated with wrong view and doubt are not found for trainees. 46. But for non-returners, impulsion thoughts of aversion are also not found. 47. And supramundane impulsion thoughts arise only for the Noble Ones, as is fitting. 48. For those beyond training (Arahants), forty-four (types of thoughts). For trainees, fifty-six (types of thoughts). For the remaining (ordinary folk), fifty-four (types of thoughts) are possible. This is the classification of individuals here. Classification of Realms 49. In the sense-sphere realm, all these process-thoughts are found as is fitting. 50. In the form-sphere realm, they are found, excluding aversion impulsion thoughts and resultant apprehension thoughts. 51. In the formless-sphere realm, they are found, excluding the first path, form-sphere, and aesthetic thoughts, and the lower formless attainments. 52. And everywhere, for those lacking the respective sense-bases, the respective door-process-thoughts are certainly not found. 53. But for non-percipient beings, there is absolutely no occurrence of consciousness. 54. Eighty process-thoughts in the sense-sphere, sixty-four in the form-sphere, and forty-two in the formless-sphere are found as is fitting. This is the classification of realms here. 55. Thus, the occurrence of consciousness through the six doors, interrupted by life-continuum, continues uninterruptedly for the duration of life, as is possible. Thus ends the section on the Compendium of Process-Thoughts, the Fourth Chapter, in the Abhidhammattha-saṅgaha. 5. Chapter on Thoughts Free from Processes 1. Thus, the compendium of occurrence, spoken of in terms of process-thoughts, is now called the compendium of rebirth-linking. 2. Four realms, four kinds of rebirth-linking, four kinds of kamma, and four ways of death-occurrence— these four tetrads should be known in the compendium of thoughts free from processes. The Tetrad of Realms 3. Therein, the realms are called the woeful realm, the sense-sphere blissful realm, the form-sphere realm, and the formless-sphere realm. 4. Among these, the woeful realm is fourfold: hell, animal kingdom, ghost realm, and demon realm. 5. Humans, the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, Yāma, Tusita, Nimmā... Narati, those who delight in the creations of others, and Vasavattī, thus the planes of happy sense-existence are sevenfold. 6. And these eleven planes are reckoned as the sense-sphere planes. 7. Brahmapārisajjā, Brahmapurohitā, and Mahābrahmā, these are the planes of the first jhāna. 8. Parittābhā, Appamāṇābhā, and Ābhassarā, these are the planes of the second jhāna. 9. Parittasubhā, Appamāṇasubhā, and Subhakiṇhā, these are the planes of the third jhāna. 10. Vehapphalā, Asaññasattā, and Suddhāvāsā, these are the planes of the fourth jhāna; thus the form-sphere planes are sixteenfold. 11. Avihā, Atappā, Sudassā, Sudassī, and Akaniṭṭhā, these are the five pure abodes. 12. The plane of infinite space, the plane of infinite consciousness, the plane of nothingness, and the plane of neither perception nor non-perception; thus the formless planes are fourfold. 13. Ordinary people are not found, in the pure abodes at all. Stream-enterers and once-returners are also not found there. 14. Noble ones are not found, in the planes of non-percipient beings and the woeful states. In the remaining places, noble and non-noble ones are found. This is the fourfold division of planes here. The fourfold division of rebirth-linking 15. Rebirth-linking in the woeful states, rebirth-linking in happy sense-existence, rebirth-linking in the form-sphere, and rebirth-linking in the formless sphere; thus rebirth-linking is fourfold. 16. Among these, the investigating consciousness accompanied by equanimity, which is the result of unwholesome karma, having become rebirth-linking at the moment of descent in the woeful states, thereafter becomes life-continuum, and at the end, having become death, it ceases. This is called the single rebirth-linking in the woeful states. 17. But the investigating consciousness accompanied by equanimity, which is the result of wholesome karma, occurs in happy sense-existence for humans, such as the blind from birth, and for earth-dwelling and fallen asuras, in the manner of rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death. 18. But the eight great wholesome results occur everywhere in happy sense-existence in the manner of rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death. 19. These are called the nine rebirth-linkings in happy sense-existence. 20. And these ten rebirth-linkings are reckoned as sense-sphere rebirth-linkings. 21. Among these, for the four woeful states, for humans, and for fallen asuras There is no fixed measure for the lifespan of ancient beings. 22. The lifespan of the Cātumahārājika devas is five hundred divine years. By human reckoning, it is ninety thousand years. Four times that for the Tāvatiṃsa devas. Four times that for the Yāma devas. Four times that for the Tusita devas. Four times that for the Nimmānaratī devas. Four times that for the Paranimmitavasavattī devas. 23. Nine hundred and twenty-one crores of years, and sixty hundred thousand years for the Vasavattī devas. 24. The result of the first jhāna occurs in the first jhāna realm as rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and death. 25. Likewise, the result of the second jhāna and the result of the third jhāna occur in the second jhāna realm. 26. The result of the fourth jhāna occurs in the third jhāna realm. 27. The result of the fifth jhāna occurs in the fourth jhāna realm. 28. For the Asaññasatta beings, only form is rebirth-linking. Likewise, thereafter in the course of existence, and at the time of passing away, only form arises and ceases. These are called the six rūpāvacara rebirth-linkings. 29. Among them, for the Brahmapārisajja devas, the lifespan is one-third of a kappa. 30. For the Brahmapurohita devas, half a kappa. 31. For the Mahābrahmā devas, one kappa. 32. For the Parittābha devas, two kappas. 33. For the Appamāṇābha devas, four kappas. 34. For the Ābhassara devas, eight kappas. 35. For the Parittasubha devas, sixteen kappas. 36. For the Appamāṇasubha devas, thirty-two kappas. 37. For the Subhakiṇha devas, sixty-four kappas. 38. For the Vehapphala devas and the Asaññasatta beings, five hundred kappas. 39. For the Aviha devas, one thousand kappas. 40. For the Atappa devas, two thousand kappas. 41. For the Sudassa devas, four thousand kappas. 42. For the Sudassī devas, eight thousand kappas. 43. For the Akaniṭṭha devas, sixteen thousand kappas. 44.
