10. The Tenth Chapter (95) 1. Discourse on Cessation 571. When the five aggregates of rebirth are not ceased, do the five aggregates of action arise? Yes. Is there a combination of ten aggregates? Do ten aggregates come into direct presence? It should not be said so... Is there a combination of ten aggregates? Do ten aggregates come into direct presence? Yes. Is there a combination of two contacts... of two consciousnesses? It should not be said so... When the five aggregates of rebirth are not ceased, do the four aggregates of action arise? Yes. Is there a combination of nine aggregates? Do nine aggregates come into direct presence? It should not be said so... Is there a combination of nine aggregates? Do nine aggregates come into direct presence? Yes. Is there a combination of two contacts... of two consciousnesses? It should not be said so... When the five aggregates of rebirth are not ceased, does knowledge of action arise? Yes. Is there a combination of six aggregates? Do six aggregates come into direct presence? It should not be said so... Is there a combination of six aggregates? Do six aggregates come into direct presence? Yes. Is there a combination of two contacts... of two consciousnesses? It should not be said so... 572. When the five aggregates of rebirth are ceased, does the path arise? Yes. Does one who is dead develop the path? Does one who has passed away develop the path? It should not be said so... Discourse on Cessation is finished. 10. The Tenth Chapter (96) 2. Discourse on 'Form is the Path' 573. For one endowed with the path, is form the path? Yes. Is it with an object? Does it have turning towards, attention, application, mindfulness, intention, aspiration, resolve? It should not be said so... Is it not without an object? Does it not lack turning towards... resolve? Yes. If it is without an object, and it lacks turning towards... resolve; then it should not be said – 'the path is... Is the form of the path, the path? Is Right Speech the path? Yes. Is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is it not without an object, is there not a turning away by it...? Yes. If it is without an object, if there is no turning away by it...; then it should not be said, "Right Speech is the path." Is Right Action... Right Livelihood the path? Yes. Is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is it not without an object, is there not a turning away by it...? Yes. If it is without an object, if there is no turning away by it...; then it should not be said, "Right Livelihood is the path." 574. Is Right View the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? Yes. Is Right Speech the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is Right View the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? Yes. Is Right Action... Right Livelihood the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Right Intention... Right Effort... Right Mindfulness... Is Right Concentration the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? Yes. Is Right Speech the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is Right Concentration the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? Yes. Is Right Action... Right Livelihood the path, and is it with an object, is there a turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is Right Speech the path, and is it without an object, is there no turning away by it...? Yes. Is Right View the path, and is it without an object, is there no turning away by it...? It should not be said thus... Is Right Speech the path, and is it without an object, is there no turning away by it...? Yes. Right Intention… Right Effort… Right Mindfulness… Right Concentration is the path. And it is without object. Is there no turning back for it…? Or aspiration? It should not be said thus… Right Action… Right Livelihood is the path. And it is without object. Is there no turning back for it…? Or aspiration? Yes. Right View… Right Intention… Right Effort… Right Mindfulness… Right Concentration is the path. And it is without object. Is there no turning back for it…? Or aspiration? It should not be said thus… 575. Should it not be said: "For one endowed with the path, form is the path"? Yes. Is not Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood the path? Yes. If Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood is the path, then indeed it should be said: "For one endowed with the path, form is the path." The discourse on 'form is the path' is concluded. 10. The Tenth Chapter (97) 3. Discourse on the path for one endowed with the five consciousnesses 576. For one endowed with the five consciousnesses, is there development of the path? Yes. Are not the five consciousnesses arisen with a basis, arisen with an object? Yes. If the five consciousnesses are arisen with a basis, arisen with an object, then indeed it should not be said: "For one endowed with the five consciousnesses, there is development of the path." Are not the five consciousnesses with a pre-arisen basis, with a pre-arisen object, with an internal basis, with an external object, with an unmixed basis, with an unmixed object, with various bases, with various objects, do not experience each other's range of perception, do not arise without attention, do not arise without mental application, do not arise without interruption, do not arise without a prior or a later, do not arise immediately after each other, are not the five consciousnesses without deliberation? Yes. If the five consciousnesses are without deliberation, then indeed it should not be said: "For one endowed with the five consciousnesses, there is development of the path." 577. For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path? Yes. Does eye-consciousness arise with emptiness as its object? It should not be said thus… eye-consciousness with emptiness as its object… Does it arise? Yes. Does eye-consciousness arise dependent on the eye and emptiness? It should not be said thus... Does eye-consciousness arise dependent on the eye and emptiness? Yes. Is there a Sutta that says: "Eye-consciousness arises dependent on the eye and emptiness"? No. Is there a Sutta that says: "Eye-consciousness arises dependent on the eye and forms"? Yes. If there is a Sutta that says: "Eye-consciousness arises dependent on the eye and forms," then indeed it should not be said: "Eye-consciousness arises dependent on the eye and emptiness." 578. For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path? Yes. Does eye-consciousness arise with reference to the past and future? It should not be said thus... For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path? Yes. Does eye-consciousness arise with reference to contact... feeling... perception... volition... consciousness... the eye... the body... sound... touch? It should not be said thus... For one endowed with mind-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does mind-consciousness arise with reference to emptiness? Yes. For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does eye-consciousness arise with reference to emptiness? It should not be said thus... For one endowed with mind-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does mind-consciousness arise with reference to the past and future? Yes. For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does eye-consciousness arise with reference to the past and future? It should not be said thus... For one endowed with mind-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does mind-consciousness arise with reference to contact... feeling... touch? Yes. For one endowed with eye-consciousness, is there development of the path, and does eye-consciousness arise with reference to contact... feeling... touch? It should not be said thus. should be said... (etc.). Should it not be said – "For one endowed with the five consciousnesses, there is development of the path"? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One – "Here, monks, a monk, having seen a form with the eye, does not grasp at its signs, nor at its secondary characteristics... (etc.)... having heard a sound with the ear... (etc.)... having smelled an odor with the nose... (etc.)... having tasted a flavor with the tongue... (etc.)... having touched a tangible object with the body, does not grasp at its signs, nor at its secondary characteristics!" Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then, for one endowed with the five consciousnesses, there is development of the path. The discussion on the path for one endowed with the five consciousnesses is concluded. 10. The Tenth Chapter (98) 4. Discussion on whether the five consciousnesses are wholesome or unwholesome Are the five consciousnesses wholesome or unwholesome? Yes. Are the five consciousnesses arisen with their bases, arisen with their objects? Yes. If the five consciousnesses are arisen with their bases, arisen with their objects, then surely it should not be said – "The five consciousnesses are wholesome or unwholesome." Are not the five consciousnesses with pre-arisen bases, with pre-arisen objects, with internal bases, with external objects, with unmixed bases, with unmixed objects, with various bases, with various objects, do they not experience each other's range of perception? do they not arise without attention? do they not arise without mental advertence? do they not arise without interruption? do they not arise without prior or subsequent? do they not arise immediately after one another? are not the five consciousnesses without deliberation? Yes. If the five consciousnesses are without deliberation, then surely it should not be said –
