For one who has attained the supramundane second jhana... third jhana... fourth jhana, is there no speech? Yes. For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there no speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). 332. Should it not be said: "For one who has attained, there is speech"? Yes. But have not initial application and sustained application been declared by the Blessed One as speech formations – "For one who has attained the first jhana, there are initial application and sustained application"? Yes. If initial application and sustained application have been declared by the Blessed One as speech formations – "For one who has attained the first jhana, there are initial application and sustained application," then indeed it should be said: "For one who has attained, there is a..." is there a breaking of speech? Thinking and pondering are verbal formations, said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering." Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. For one who has attained the first jhāna of the earth kasina, there is thinking and pondering. Is there for him a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Thinking and pondering are verbal formations, said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering." Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. For one who has attained the first jhāna of the water kasina... fire kasina... wind kasina... blue kasina... yellow kasina... red kasina... white kasina, there is thinking and pondering. Is there for him a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Should it not be said: "For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech"? Yes. But has not speech arisen from thinking been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering"? Yes. If speech arisen from thinking has been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering," then indeed it should be said: "For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech." Speech arisen from thinking has been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering." Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. Has speech arisen from perception been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the second jhāna, there is perception, is there for him thinking and pondering"? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Speech arisen from thinking has been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the first jhāna, there is thinking and pondering." Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. Has speech arisen from perception been said by the Blessed One: "For one who has attained the third jhāna... (etc.)... fourth jhāna... the sphere of infinite space... the sphere of infinite consciousness... the sphere of nothingness, there is perception, is there for him thinking and pondering"? It should not be said thus... (etc.) 333. For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech. Is there a breaking of speech? Yes. But is it not said: “For one who has attained the first jhana, speech is ceased”? Is there such a discourse? Yes. If “For one who has attained the first jhana, speech is ceased,” and there is such a discourse, then it should not be said: “For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech.” “For one who has attained the first jhana, speech is ceased,” is there such a discourse? Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. “For one who has attained the second jhana, initial and sustained application are ceased,” is there such a discourse? Are there for him initial and sustained application? It should not be said so… and so on. “For one who has attained the first jhana, speech is ceased,” is there such a discourse? Is there for him a breaking of speech? Yes. “For one who has attained the third jhana, rapture is ceased; for one who has attained the fourth jhana, in-breaths and out-breaths are ceased; for one who has attained the base of infinite space, perception of form is ceased; for one who has attained the base of infinite consciousness, perception of infinite space is ceased; for one who has attained the base of nothingness, perception of infinite consciousness is ceased; for one who has attained the base of neither perception nor non-perception, perception of nothingness is ceased; for one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling, perception and feeling are ceased,” is there such a discourse? Are there for him perception and feeling? It should not be said so… and so on. Should it not be said: “For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech”? Yes. But has not sound been called a thorn for the first jhana by the Blessed One? Yes. If sound has been called a thorn for the first jhana by the Blessed One, then it should be said: “For one who has attained, there is a breaking of speech.” For the first jhana… The sound of breathing is called a thorn by the Blessed One. Does one who has attained have a breaking of speech? Yes. For the second jhana, initial and sustained application are called thorns by the Blessed One... For the third jhana, rapture is called a thorn by the Blessed One... For the fourth jhana, in-breaths and out-breaths are called thorns by the Blessed One... For one who has attained the sphere of infinite space, perception of form is called a thorn by the Blessed One... For one who has attained the sphere of infinite consciousness, perception of the sphere of infinite space is called a thorn by the Blessed One... For one who has attained the sphere of nothingness, perception of the sphere of infinite consciousness is called a thorn by the Blessed One... For one who has attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, perception of the sphere of nothingness is called a thorn by the Blessed One... For one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling, perception and feeling are called thorns by the Blessed One. Does he have perception and feeling? It should not be said thus... Should it not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech"? Yes. But was it not said by the Blessed One: "Ananda, a disciple named Abhibhū, of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened Buddha Sikhī, standing in the Brahma-world, made the ten-thousand-world-system understand with his voice – ‘Strive! It should not be said so. A matricide… a parricide… a killer of an Arahant… one who causes blood to flow… a schismatic speaks the word "suffering", does a schismatic develop the path? Does one consciousness last for a day? Yes. Is half a day the moment of arising, and half a day the moment of passing away? It should not be said so. Does one consciousness last for two days? Yes. Is one day the moment of arising, and one day the moment of passing away? It should not be said so. Does one consciousness last for four days? Does one consciousness last for eight days? Does one consciousness last for ten days? Does one consciousness last for twenty days? Does one consciousness last for a month? Does one consciousness last for two months? Does one consciousness last for four months? Does one consciousness last for eight months? Does one consciousness last for ten months? Does one consciousness last for a year?
