"There is a release of others by an Arahant." Is there a release of others by an Arahant? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "Monks, not fully knowing, not fully understanding, not dispassionately observing, not abandoning all, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering; but, monks, fully knowing, fully understanding, dispassionately observing, abandoning all, one is capable of the destruction of suffering"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, it should not be said – "There is a release of others by an Arahant." Is there a release of others by an Arahant? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "With the perfection of his vision... (and so on)... he is incapable of six grave offenses"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, it should not be said – "There is a release of others by an Arahant." Is there a release of others by an Arahant? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "Monks, at the time when the noble disciple's dust-free, stain-free Eye of Dhamma arose – 'Whatever is of the nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease' – with the arising of that vision, monks, three fetters are abandoned by the noble disciple – personality view, doubt, and clinging to rites and rituals"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, it should not be said – "There is a release of others by an Arahant." Is there a release of others by an Arahant? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "I will not be able to release, Dhotaka, anyone in the world who is in doubt. Knowing the supreme Dhamma, Thus you will cross this flood." Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, it should not be said – "There is a release of others by an Arahant." Should it not be said – "There is a release of others by an Arahant"? Yes. But would not others explain the names and clans of men and women for an Arahant? Would not others explain the path and non-path for an Arahant? Would not others explain the names of grasses, wood, and plants for an Do they explain? Yes. If others explain the names and clans of Arahants, men and women, if others explain the path and non-path, if others explain the names of grasses, wood, and plants, then indeed it should be said – "There is explanation by others for an Arahant." Others explain the names and clans of Arahants, men and women, others explain the path and non-path, others explain the names of grasses, wood, and plants, is there explanation by others for an Arahant? Yes. Do others explain the fruit of stream-entry, or the fruit of once-returning, or the fruit of non-returning, or Arahantship for an Arahant? It should not be said thus... For all those in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? Yes. Always for those in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? Yes. For all those in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? Yes. In all attainments, is there a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one in attainment, is there a breaking of speech? Yes. For one in attainment, is there a breaking of body? Knowing "suffering," does one utter the word "suffering"? Yes. Knowing "origin," does one utter the word "origin"? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Knowing "suffering," does one utter the word "suffering"? Yes. Knowing "cessation," does one utter the word "cessation"? It should not be said thus... Knowing "suffering," does one utter the word "suffering"? Yes. Knowing "path," does one utter the word "path"? It should not be said thus... Knowing "origin," does one not utter the word "origin"? Yes. Knowing "suffering," does one not utter the word "suffering"? It should not be said thus... Knowing "cessation," does one not utter the word "cessation"? Yes. Knowing "suffering," does one not utter the word "suffering"? It should not be said thus... Knowing "path," does one not utter the word "path"? Yes. Knowing "suffering," does one not utter the word "suffering"? It should not be said thus... 328. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment? Yes. What is the object of knowledge? Knowledge has truth as its object. Does the ear have truth as its object? It should not be said thus... Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment? Yes. What is the object of the ear? The ear has sound as its object. Does knowledge have sound as its object? It should not be said thus. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment, knowledge having truth as its object, the ear having sound as its object? Yes. If knowledge has truth as its object, and the ear has sound as its object, then it should not be said, "There is a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment." Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment, knowledge having truth as its object, the ear having sound as its object? Yes. Is there a combination of two contacts, two feelings, two perceptions, two volitions, two consciousnesses? It should not be said thus. 329. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment? Yes. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in the earth-kasina attainment? It should not be said thus. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in attainment? Yes. Is there a breaking forth of speech for one in the water-kasina... fire-kasina... wind-kasina... blue-kasina... yellow-kasina... red-kasina... white-kasina... attainment of the sphere of infinite space... attainment of the sphere of infinite consciousness... attainment of the sphere of nothingness... attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? Does one who has attained have a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... Does one who has attained the earth kasina attainment have no breaking of speech? Yes. If one who has attained the earth kasina attainment has no breaking of speech, then it should certainly not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech." Does one who has attained the water kasina... fire kasina... wind kasina... blue kasina... yellow kasina... red kasina... white kasina... the sphere of infinite space... the sphere of infinite consciousness... the sphere of nothingness... the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception have no breaking of speech? Yes. If one who has attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception has no breaking of speech, then it should certainly not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech." Does one who has attained have a breaking of speech? Yes. Does one who has attained a worldly attainment have a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... Does one who has attained have a breaking of speech? Yes. Does one who has attained the worldly first jhana have a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... Does one who has attained have a breaking of speech? Yes. Does one who has attained the worldly second jhana... third jhana... fourth jhana have a breaking of speech? It should not be said thus... Does one who has attained a worldly attainment have no breaking of speech? Yes. If one who has attained a worldly attainment has no breaking of speech, then it should certainly not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech." Does one who has attained the worldly first jhana have no breaking of speech? Yes. If one who has attained the worldly first jhana has no breaking of speech, then it should certainly not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech." Does one who has attained the worldly second jhana... third jhana... fourth jhana have no breaking of speech? Yes. If one who has attained the worldly fourth jhana has no breaking of speech, then it should certainly not be said: "One who has attained has a breaking of speech." 330. One who has attained the supramundane first jhana... Is there speech? Yes. For one who has attained the mundane first jhana, is there speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there speech? Yes. For one who has attained the mundane second jhana... third jhana... fourth jhana, is there speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). For one who has attained the mundane first jhana, is there no speech? Yes. For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there no speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). For one who has attained the mundane second jhana... third jhana... fourth jhana, is there no speech? Yes. For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there no speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). 331. For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there speech? Yes. For one who has attained the supramundane second jhana, is there speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on). For one who has attained the supramundane first jhana, is there speech? Yes. For one who has attained the supramundane third jhana... fourth jhana, is there speech? It should not be said thus... (and so on).
