Second Chapter (10) 1. Discourse on Offering by Others Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. Is there passion for an Arahant, sensual passion, the arising of sensual passion, the fetter of sensual passion, the flood of sensuality, the yoke of sensuality, the hindrance of sensual desire? It should not be said so… Is there no passion for an Arahant, no sensual passion, no arising of sensual passion, no fetter of sensual passion, no flood of sensuality, no yoke of sensuality, no hindrance of sensual desire? Yes. If there is no passion for an Arahant, no sensual passion, no arising of sensual passion, no fetter of sensual passion, no flood of sensuality, no yoke of sensuality, no hindrance of sensual desire, then it should certainly not be said: "There is impure seminal emission for an Arahant." Is there impure seminal emission for an ordinary person, and is there for them passion, sensual passion, the arising of sensual passion, the fetter of sensual passion, the flood of sensuality, the yoke of sensuality, the hindrance of sensual desire? Yes. Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant, and is there for them passion, sensual passion, the arising of sensual passion… the hindrance of sensual desire? It should not be said so… Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant, and is there no passion for them, no sensual passion, no arising of sensual passion… no hindrance of sensual desire? Yes. Is there impure seminal emission for an ordinary person, and is there no passion for them, no sensual passion, no arising of sensual passion… no hindrance of sensual desire? It should not be said so… Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. For what reason? Indeed, the Māra-bodied deities offer impure seminal emission to an Arahant. Do the Māra-bodied deities offer impure seminal emission to an Arahant? Yes. Is there impure seminal emission for the Māra-bodied deities? It should not be said so… Is there no impure seminal emission for the Māra-bodied deities? Yes. If there is no impure seminal emission for the Māra-bodied deities, then it should certainly not be said: "The Māra-bodied deities offer impure seminal emission to an Arahant." Māra-bodied Which deity brings forth impure seminal discharge for an Arahant? Yes. Do deities of Māra's host bring forth their own impure seminal discharge? Do they bring forth impure seminal discharge for others? Do they bring forth impure seminal discharge for him? It should not be said thus... (and so on)... Do deities of Māra's host bring forth impure seminal discharge neither for themselves, nor for others, nor for him? Yes. If deities of Māra's host bring forth impure seminal discharge neither for themselves, nor for others, nor for him, then surely it should not be said: "Deities of Māra's host bring forth impure seminal discharge for an Arahant." Do deities of Māra's host bring forth impure seminal discharge for an Arahant? Yes. Do they bring it forth through the pores of the skin? It should not be said thus... (and so on)... 308. Do deities of Māra's host bring forth impure seminal discharge for an Arahant? Yes. For what reason? "Indeed, we will cause him to doubt." Does an Arahant have doubt? It should not be said thus... (and so on)... Does an Arahant have doubt? Yes. Does an Arahant have doubt about the Teacher? about the Dhamma? about the Saṅgha? about the training? about the past? about the future? about both past and future? about dependent origination and dependently arisen phenomena? It should not be said thus... (and so on)... An Arahant has no doubt about the Teacher, about the Dhamma, about the Saṅgha, about the training, about the past, about the future, about both past and future, about dependent origination and dependently arisen phenomena? Yes. If an Arahant has no doubt about the Teacher... (and so on)... about dependent origination and dependently arisen phenomena, then surely it should not be said: "An Arahant has doubt." A common person has doubt, he has doubt about the Teacher... (and so on)... about dependent origination and dependently arisen phenomena? Yes. Does an Arahant have doubt? Does he have doubt about the Teacher... (and so on)... about dependent In phenomena arisen from specific conditions, is there doubt? It should not be said thus… Is there doubt for an Arahant? There is no doubt for him in the Teacher… Is there doubt in phenomena arisen from specific conditions? Yes. Is there doubt for an ordinary person? There is no doubt for him in the Teacher… Is there doubt in phenomena arisen from specific conditions? It should not be said thus… Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. From what is the Arahant's impure seminal emission a result? It is a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. Is the Arahant's impure seminal emission a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted? Yes. For all who eat, drink, chew, and taste, is there impure seminal emission? It should not be said thus… For all who eat, drink, chew, and taste, is there impure seminal emission? Yes. Children eat, drink, chew, and taste. Is there impure seminal emission for children? It should not be said thus. Eunuchs eat, drink, chew, and taste. Is there impure seminal emission for eunuchs? It should not be said thus… Devas eat, drink, chew, and taste. Is there impure seminal emission for devas? It should not be said thus… Is the Arahant's impure seminal emission a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted? Yes. Is there a latent tendency for him? It should not be said thus… The Arahant's urine and feces are a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. Is there a latent tendency for him? Yes. The Arahant's impure seminal emission is a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. Is there a latent tendency for him? It should not be said thus… The Arahant's impure seminal emission is a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. Is there no latent tendency for him? Yes. The Arahant's urine and feces are a result of what is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. Is there no latent tendency for him? It should not be said thus… Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. Would an Arahant engage in sexual intercourse, generate sexual activity, dwell in a bed crowded with children, experience Kāsika sandalwood, wear garlands, perfumes, and ointments, accept gold and silver? This should not be said. Is there impure seminal emission for an ordinary person? Would an ordinary person engage in sexual intercourse, generate sexual activity, dwell in a bed crowded with children, experience Kāsika sandalwood, wear garlands, perfumes, and ointments, accept gold and silver? Yes. Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Would an Arahant engage in sexual intercourse, generate sexual activity, dwell in a bed crowded with children, experience Kāsika sandalwood, wear garlands, perfumes, and ointments, accept gold and silver? This should not be said... Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? And would an Arahant not engage in sexual intercourse, generate sexual activity, dwell in a bed crowded with children, experience Kāsika sandalwood, wear garlands, perfumes, and ointments, accept gold and silver? Yes. Is there impure seminal emission for an ordinary person? And would an ordinary person not engage in sexual intercourse, generate sexual activity, dwell in a bed crowded with children, experience Kāsika sandalwood, wear garlands, perfumes, and ointments, accept gold and silver? This should not be said. Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. Has not an Arahant's lust been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future? Yes. If an Arahant's lust has been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future, then it should certainly not be said – "There is impure seminal emission for an Arahant." Is there impure seminal emission for an Arahant? Yes. Has not an Arahant's hatred been abandoned... delusion... Lust is abandoned… Conceit is abandoned… Views are abandoned… Doubt is abandoned… Sloth is abandoned… Restlessness is abandoned… Shamelessness is abandoned… … Lack of moral dread is abandoned, its root cut off, made like a palm-stump, made non-existent, not liable to arise in the future? Yes. If for an Arahant, lack of moral dread is abandoned, its root cut off, made like a palm-stump, made non-existent, not liable to arise in the future, then it should not be said – “There is for an Arahant impure emission of semen.” 311. Is there for an Arahant impure emission of semen? Yes. Has not the path for the abandoning of lust been developed by an Arahant? Yes. If for an Arahant the path for the abandoning of lust has been developed, then it should not be said – “There is for an Arahant impure emission of semen.” Is there for an Arahant impure emission of semen? Yes. Have not for an Arahant, for the abandoning of lust, the foundations of mindfulness been developed… the right exertions been developed… the bases of psychic power been developed… the faculties been developed… the powers been developed… the factors of awakening been developed? Yes. If for an Arahant the factors of awakening for the abandoning of lust have been developed, then it should not be said – “There is for an Arahant impure emission of semen.” Is there for an Arahant impure emission of semen? Yes. Have not for an Arahant, for the abandoning of hatred… for the abandoning of delusion… for the abandoning of lack of moral dread, the path been developed… the factors of awakening been developed? Yes. If for an Arahant the factors of awakening for the abandoning of lack of moral dread have been developed, then it should not be said – “There is for an Arahant impure emission of semen.” Is there for an Arahant impure emission of semen? Yes. Is not an Arahant free from lust,
