Yes. Is there ignorance in an Arahant, is there ignorance in him regarding the Teacher, regarding the Dhamma, regarding the Sangha, (...) regarding the conditioned co-arisen phenomena of dependent origination? No, it should not be said so. Is there ignorance in an Arahant, but no ignorance in him regarding the Teacher, regarding the Dhamma, regarding the Sangha, (...) regarding the conditioned co-arisen phenomena of dependent origination? Yes. Is there ignorance in an ordinary person, but no ignorance in him regarding the Teacher, regarding the Dhamma, regarding the Sangha, (...) regarding the conditioned co-arisen phenomena of dependent origination? No, it should not be said so. 315. Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes. Has not lust in an Arahant been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, and incapable of future arising? Yes. If lust in an Arahant has been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, and is incapable of future arising, then truly, it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes. Has not hatred in an Arahant been abandoned (...) delusion been abandoned (...) lack of conscientiousness been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, and incapable of future arising? Yes. If lack of conscientiousness in an Arahant has been abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, and is incapable of future arising, then truly, it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes. Has not the path for the abandonment of lust been developed in an Arahant (...) have the factors of awakening been developed? Yes. If the factors of awakening for the abandonment of lust have been developed in an Arahant, then truly, it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes. Has not for the abandonment of hatred in an Arahant (...) for the abandonment of delusion (...) for the abandonment of lack of conscientiousness The path for abandoning (defilements) has been developed... the factors of awakening have been developed? Yes. If for an Arahant, the factors of awakening have been developed for abandoning shamelessness, then it should not be said – "there is ignorance for an Arahant." Is there ignorance for an Arahant? Yes. Is not an Arahant free from lust, free from hatred, free from delusion... what should be realized has been realized? Yes. If an Arahant is free from lust... what should be realized has been realized, then it should not be said – "there is ignorance for an Arahant." 316. Is there ignorance for an Arahant? For an Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma, there is ignorance, for an Arahant skilled in others' Dhamma, there is no ignorance. For an Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma, is there ignorance? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in others' Dhamma, is there ignorance? It should not be said so... For an Arahant skilled in others' Dhamma, is there no ignorance? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma, is there no ignorance? It should not be said so... For an Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma, lust is abandoned, is there ignorance for him? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in others' Dhamma, lust is abandoned, is there ignorance for him? It should not be said so... For an Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma, hatred is abandoned... delusion is abandoned... shamelessness is abandoned, is there ignorance for him? Yes. An Arahant skilled in one's own Dhamma. Free from passion, free from hatred, free from delusion, what should be realized has been realized. Is there ignorance in him? Yes. An Arahant skilled in others' doctrines, free from passion, free from hatred, free from delusion, what should be realized has been realized. Is there ignorance in him? It should not be said so. For an Arahant skilled in others' doctrines, passion is abandoned. Is there no ignorance in him? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in his own doctrine, passion is abandoned. Is there no ignorance in him? It should not be said so. For an Arahant skilled in others' doctrines, hatred is abandoned, delusion is abandoned, shamelessness is abandoned. Is there no ignorance in him? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in his own doctrine, shamelessness is abandoned. Is there no ignorance in him? It should not be said so. For an Arahant skilled in others' doctrines, the path for abandoning passion has been developed, the factors of awakening have been developed; for abandoning hatred, for abandoning delusion, for abandoning shamelessness, the path has been developed, the factors of awakening have been developed. Is there no ignorance in him? Yes. For an Arahant skilled in his own doctrine, the factors of awakening for abandoning shamelessness have been developed. Is there no ignorance in him? It should not be said so. An Arahant skilled in others' doctrines, free from passion, free from hatred, free from delusion, what should be realized has been realized. Is there no ignorance in him? Yes. An Arahant skilled in his own doctrine, free from passion, free from hatred, free from delusion, what should be realized has been realized. Is there no ignorance in him? It should not be said so. 317. Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes. But has it not been said by the Blessed One: "Monks, I declare the destruction of the taints for one who knows, for one who sees, not for one who does not know, not for one who does not see. And what, monks, does one know, what does one see, for the destruction of the taints to occur? 'Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the cessation of form; such is feeling, such is the origin of feeling, such is the cessation of feeling; such is perception, such is the origin of perception, such is the cessation of perception; such are formations, such is the origin of formations, such is the cessation of formations; such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the cessation of consciousness' – Indeed, monks, for one who knows thus, for one who sees thus, the taints..." their destruction occurs." Is there such a discourse? Yes, there is. Then it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes, there is. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "I declare, monks, the destruction of defilements for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know and does not see. And what, monks, is it that one knows and sees for the destruction of defilements? 'This is suffering' – monks, for one who knows and sees this, the destruction of defilements occurs. 'This is the origin of suffering' – for one who knows and sees this, the destruction of defilements occurs. 'This is the cessation of suffering' – for one who knows and sees this, the destruction of defilements occurs. 'This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering' – for one who knows and sees this, the destruction of defilements occurs. Thus, monks, for one who knows thus, who sees thus, the destruction of defilements occurs." Is there such a discourse? Yes, there is. Then it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes, there is. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "Not fully knowing, monks, not fully comprehending, not dispassionately observing, not abandoning all, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering. But fully knowing, monks, fully comprehending, dispassionately observing, abandoning all, one is capable of the destruction of suffering." Is there such a discourse? Yes, there is. Then it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes, there is. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "With the attainment of vision, three things are abandoned by him: self-identity view, doubt, and whatever clinging to rules and rituals there may be. He is freed from the four lower realms, and is incapable of committing the six grave offenses." Is there such a discourse? Yes, there is. Then it should not be said: "There is ignorance in an Arahant." Is there ignorance in an Arahant? Yes, there is. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "Monks, at the time when the stainless, undefiled Dhamma-eye arises in a noble disciple..." i – ‘Whatever is of the nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease.’ With the arising of insight, monks, three fetters are abandoned by the noble disciple: personality view, doubt, and adherence to rites and rituals. Is there such a Sutta? Yes. Then it should not be said: ‘There is ignorance in an Arahant.’ Should it not be said: ‘There is ignorance in an Arahant’? Yes. Does not an Arahant not know the names and clans of men and women, not know the right path and the wrong path,
