(A) What are these seven views? Here, some ascetic or brahmin holds such a view, speaks thus: "Indeed, friend, this self, which is material, composed of the four great elements, born of mother and father, upon the breaking up of the body, is cut off, perishes, does not exist after death. To this extent, friend, this self is rightly annihilated." Thus, some declare the cutting off, perishing, and annihilation of an existing being. (B) Another says this: "Indeed, friend, that self you speak of exists. I do not say 'it does not exist'. But, friend, this self is not rightly annihilated to that extent. Indeed, friend, there is another self, divine, material, belonging to the sense-sphere, feeding on solid food. You do not know or see that. I know and see that. Indeed, friend, when that self, upon the breaking up of the body, is cut off, perishes, does not exist after death, to this extent, friend, this self is rightly annihilated." Thus, some declare the cutting off, perishing, and annihilation of an existing being. (C) Another says this: "Indeed, friend, that self you speak of exists. I do not say 'it does not exist'. But, friend, this self is not rightly annihilated to that extent. Indeed, friend, there is another self, divine, material, mind-made, complete with all its parts and limbs, with unimpaired faculties. You do not know or see that. I know and see that. Indeed, that , sirs, when the self, upon the body's breaking up, is cut off, perishes, and does not exist after death, to that extent, sirs, this self is rightly annihilated." Thus some proclaim the cutting off, perishing, and non-existence of an existing being. (Gha) Another says this: "Sirs, there is indeed that self of which you speak. I do not say 'it does not exist.' But, sirs, this self is not rightly annihilated to that extent. Sirs, there is another self, having completely transcended perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, with the non-attention to perceptions of diversity, thinking 'infinite space,' having attained the sphere of infinite space. That you do not know, you do not see. That I know, I see. When that self, sirs, upon the body's breaking up, is cut off, perishes, and does not exist after death, to that extent, sirs, this self is rightly annihilated." Thus some proclaim the cutting off, perishing, and non-existence of an existing being. (Ṅa) Another says this: "Sirs, there is indeed that self of which you speak. I do not say 'it does not exist.' But, sirs, this self is not rightly annihilated to that extent. Sirs, there is another self, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'infinite consciousness,' having attained the sphere of infinite consciousness. (Ca) Another says this: "Sirs, there is indeed that self of which you speak.
