(34) Wicked Ambition 851. Therein, what is wicked ambition? Here, someone, being faithless, desires, "May people know me as faithful." Being immoral, he desires, "May people know me as moral." Being unlearned, he desires, "May people know me as learned." Being fond of company, he desires, "May people know me as secluded." Being lazy, he desires, "May people know me as energetic." Being forgetful, he desires, "May people know me as mindful." Being unconcentrated, he desires, "May people know me as concentrated." Being unwise, he desires, "May people know me as wise." Being one whose defilements are not destroyed, he desires, "May people know me as one whose defilements are destroyed." Whatever such desire, desire-gone, wicked ambition, lust, strong lust, strong lust of the mind – this is called "wicked ambition." (35) Charm 852. Therein, what is charm? Whatever charm, charmingness, cleverness, skill, adornment, ornamentation – this is called "charm." (36) Restlessness 853. Therein, what is restlessness? Whatever restlessness, being restless, state of being restless, greed, being greedy, state of being greedy, meddlesomeness, eagerness for approval – this is called "restlessness." (37) Agitation 854. Therein, what is agitation? Adorning robes, adorning bowls, adorning dwellings, or adorning this decaying body, or external requisites, embellishment, playing, excessive playing, greediness, state of greediness, fickleness, agitation – this is called "agitation." (38) Improper Conduct 855. Therein, what is improper conduct? Towards mother or father, or elder brother, or teachers, or preceptor, or the Buddha, or disciples, or any others who are worthy of respect, taking a contrary view, opposing... constant meanness disrespect disrespectfulness irreverence lack of deference – this is called "ignoble conduct." (39) Discontent Therein, what is discontent? Discontent discontentedness displeasure not delighting weariness agitation in remote dwellings or in various higher wholesome states – this is called "discontent." (40) Sloth Therein, what is sloth? That sloth sluggishness state of sluggishness laziness being lazy state of being lazy – this is called "sloth." (41) Stretching Therein, what is stretching? That stretching of the body yawning bending forward bending down stooping bowing down bodily stiffness – this is called "stretching." (42) Food-intoxication Therein, what is food-intoxication? That of one who has eaten: food-drowsiness food-weariness food-discomfort bodily clumsiness – this is called "food-intoxication." (43) And mental sluggishness Therein, what is mental sluggishness? That unhealthiness of mind unworkability sinking down shrinking back sluggishness being sluggish state of being sluggish torpor becoming torpid state of the mind becoming torpid – this is called "mental sluggishness." (44) Deception Therein, what is deception? Of one with evil wishes, driven by desire, dependent on gain, honor, and fame: by way of using requisites, or by flattering neighbors, or by adopting a posture, setting up a demeanor, arranging a demeanor, frowning, a state of frowning – deception, deceiving, state of having deceived – this is called "deception." (45) Flattery Therein, what is flattery? Of one with evil wishes, driven by desire, dependent on gain, honor, and fame: that addressing others, speaking to them, conversing with them, extolling, excessive praise, exalting, excessive exalting, praising, excessive praising, speaking pleasing words, obsequiousness, fawning, servility – this is called "flattery." (46) Divination Therein, what is divi... What is "divination"? For one who is attached to gain, honor, and fame, who is evil-willed, and overcome by desire, that which is a sign, a sign-making, an illumination, an illumination-making, a whispering to others, a speaking about others— this is called "divination." (47) Denigration 864. What then is "denigration"? For one who is attached to gain, honor, and fame, who is evil-willed, and overcome by desire, that which is reviling, disparaging, blaming, exalting oneself, exalting oneself greatly, throwing down, throwing down completely, causing to fall, causing to fall completely, carrying dispraise, backbiting others— this is called "denigration." (48) Seeking gain by gain 865. What then is "seeking gain by gain"? One who is attached to gain, honor, and fame, evil-willed, and overcome by desire, takes gain obtained here and carries it yonder, or brings gain obtained yonder to here; such seeking, searching, investigating, endeavoring, inquiring, exploring for gain— this is called "seeking gain by gain." (49) The conceit "I am superior" 866. What then is the conceit "I am superior"? Here, someone by birth, or by lineage, or by being a son of a good family, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by craft, or by knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by some other thing, utters conceit; such conceit, imagining, the state of imagining, exaltation, upliftment, a banner, a grasping, a desire for a flag of the mind— this is called "the conceit 'I am superior'." (50) The conceit "I am equal" 867. What then is the conceit "I am equal"? Here, someone by birth, or by lineage, or by being a son of a good family, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by craft, or by knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by some other thing, utters conceit; such conceit, imagining, the state of imagining, exaltation, upliftment, a banner, a grasping, a desire for a flag of the mind— this is called "the conceit 'I am equal'." ...is the conceit.'' (51) The conceit 'I am inferior' 868. What is the conceit 'I am inferior' there? Here, someone, by birth, or by clan, or by family lineage, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by craft, or by knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by some other thing, generates a low estimation of self. Whatever such low estimation, self-disparagement, state of self-disparagement, contempt, self-contempt, state of self-contempt, self-deprecation, self-blame, self-disgrace – this is called 'the conceit "I am inferior"'. (52) The conceit 'I am superior to the superior' 869. What is the conceit 'I am superior to the superior' there? Here, someone is superior by birth, or by clan, or by family lineage, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by craft, or by knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by some other thing, and considers himself superior to others; relying on that, he generates conceit. Whatever such conceit, conceiving, state of conceiving, uplift, rising up, banner, grasping, wish for a flag of the mind – this is called 'the conceit "I am superior to the superior"'. (53) The conceit 'I am equal to the superior' 870. What is the conceit 'I am equal to the superior' there? Here, someone is superior by birth, or by clan, or by family lineage, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by craft, or by knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by some other thing, and considers himself equal to others; relying on that, he generates conceit. Whatever such conceit, conceiving, state of conceiving, uplift, rising up, banner, grasping, wish for a flag of the mind – this is called 'the conceit "I am equal to the superior"'. (54) The conceit 'I am inferior to the superior' 871. What is the conceit 'I am inferior to the superior' there? Here, someone is superior by birth, or by clan, or by family lineage, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by profession, or by... by means of gain, or by means of skill, or by means of knowledge, or by means of learning, or by means of ready wit, or by means of some other thing, he considers himself inferior to others; relying on that, he utters self-abasement. Whatever such self-abasement, belittling, being belittled, contempt, scorn, being scorned, self-disparagement, self-contempt, self-humiliation – this is called "the conceit 'I am inferior to a superior one'". (55) The conceit 'I am superior to an equal' 872. What, in this case, is the conceit 'I am superior to an equal'? Here, someone is an equal by birth, or by lineage, or by being a son of a good family, or... by means of some other thing, he considers himself superior to others; relying on that, he utters conceit. Whatever such conceit, arrogance, being arrogant, or... the mind's desire for prominence – this is called "the conceit 'I am superior to an equal'". (56) The conceit 'I am equal to an equal' 873. What, in this case, is the conceit 'I am equal to an equal'? Here, someone is an equal by birth, or by lineage, or by being a son of a good family, or... by means of some other thing, he considers himself equal to others; relying on that, he utters conceit. Whatever such conceit, arrogance, being arrogant, loftiness, haughtiness, a flag, grasping, the mind's desire for prominence – this is called "the conceit 'I am equal to an equal'". (57) The conceit 'I am inferior to an equal' 874. What, in this case, is the conceit 'I am inferior to an equal'? Here, someone is an equal by birth, or by lineage, or by being a son of a good family, or... by means of some other thing, he considers himself inferior to others; relying on that, he utters self-abasement. Whatever such self-abasement, belittling, being belittled, contempt, scorn, being scorned, self-disparagement, self-contempt, self-humiliation – this is called "the conceit 'I am inferior to an equal'". (58) The conceit 'I am superior to an inferior' 875.
