one does not sleep, one does not awaken, one does not see dreams. Thus, wisdom that discerns the true nature of things. Thus, the basis of knowledge in one way. The One. 2. Exposition of the Twos 767. (1) In the three planes, wholesome and indeterminate, worldly wisdom. Wisdom, wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is supramundane wisdom. (2) All wisdom is to be known by some, is not to be known by some. (3) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is wisdom with taints. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is wisdom without taints. (4) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from taints, is wisdom with taints. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, dissociated from taints, is wisdom without taints. (5) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is fettering wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is unfettering wisdom. (6) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from fetters, is fettering wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, dissociated from fetters, is unfettering wisdom. (7) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is binding wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is unbinding wisdom. (8) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from ties, is binding wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, dissociated from ties, is unbinding wisdom. (9) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is overwhelming wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is unoverwhelming wisdom. (10) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from floods, is overwhelming wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, dissociated from floods, is unoverwhelming wisdom. (11) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is yoking wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is unyoking wisdom. (12) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from yokes, is yoking wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, dissociated from yokes, is unyoking wisdom. (13) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, is hindering wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is unhindering wisdom. (14) Wisdom in the three planes, skillful and indeterminate, dissociated from hindrances, hindr Wisdom disjoined from hindrances, not a hindrance. (15) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, is wisdom grasped. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is wisdom not grasped. (16) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, disjoined from wrong view, is wisdom grasped. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, disjoined from wrong view, is wisdom not grasped. (17) Wisdom in the three planes, in resultant states, is wisdom clung to. Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome states, in functional indeterminate states, in the four paths, in the four fruits, is wisdom not clung to. (18) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, is wisdom liable to clinging. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is wisdom not liable to clinging. (19) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, disjoined from clinging, is wisdom liable to clinging. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, disjoined from clinging, is wisdom not liable to clinging. (20) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, is wisdom defiling. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, is wisdom not defiling. (21) Wisdom in the three planes, in wholesome and indeterminate states, disjoined from defilements, is wisdom defiling. Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits, disjoined from defilements, is wisdom not defiling. (22) Wisdom conjoined with initial application is wisdom with initial application. Wisdom disjoined from initial application is wisdom without initial application. (23) Wisdom conjoined with sustained application is wisdom with sustained application. Wisdom disjoined from sustained application is wisdom without sustained application. (24) Wisdom conjoined with joy is wisdom with joy. Wisdom disjoined from joy is wisdom without joy. (25) Wisdom conjoined with joy is wisdom accompanied by joy. Wisdom disjoined from joy is wisdom not accompanied by joy. (26) Wisdom conjoined with happiness is wisdom accompanied by happiness. Wisdom disjoined from happiness is wisdom not accompanied by happiness. (27) Wisdom conjoined with equanimity is wisdom accompanied by equanimity. Wisdom disjoined from equanimity is wisdom not accompanied by equanimity. (28) Wisdom in wholesome and indeterminate states of the sense-sphere is wisdom of the sense-sphere. Wisdom of the form-sphere. Wisdom of the formless-sphere. Unincluded... Included wisdom is not sense-sphere wisdom. (29) Wisdom in wholesome and indeterminate states of the form-sphere is form-sphere wisdom. Sense-sphere wisdom, formless-sphere wisdom, wisdom not included, is not form-sphere wisdom. (30) Wisdom in wholesome and indeterminate states of the formless-sphere is formless-sphere wisdom. Sense-sphere wisdom, form-sphere wisdom, wisdom not included, is not formless-sphere wisdom. (31) Wisdom in wholesome and indeterminate states in the three realms is included wisdom. Wisdom in the four paths and four fruits is not included wisdom. (32) Wisdom in the four paths is wisdom leading to liberation. Wisdom in wholesome states in the three realms, in resultant states in the four realms, in functional indeterminate states in the three realms, is wisdom not leading to liberation. (33) Wisdom in the four paths is fixed wisdom. Wisdom in wholesome states in the three realms, in resultant states in the four realms, in functional indeterminate states in the three realms, is unfixed wisdom. (34) Wisdom in wholesome and indeterminate states in the three realms is wisdom with a superior. Wisdom in the four paths and four fruits is unsurpassed wisdom. (35) Among these, which is wisdom that generates meaning? Wisdom in functional indeterminate states in wholesome states in the four realms, for an Arahant generating higher knowledge, generating attainments, is wisdom that generates meaning. Wisdom in functional indeterminate states in resultant states in the four realms, for an Arahant with arisen higher knowledge, with arisen attainments, is wisdom whose meaning has been generated. Thus, the basis of knowledge is twofold. The Dyad. 3. Section on Triads 768. (1. Ka) Among these, which is wisdom born of reflection? In matters of action, or in matters of craft, or in matters of knowledge, (thinking) "actions are one's own" or in accordance with truth, or "form is impermanent" or "feeling... perception... formations... consciousness is impermanent," such a conforming patience, view, liking, delight, expectation, patience in the contemplation of phenomena, which one obtains without hearing from another – this is called "wisdom born of reflection." (Kha) Among these, which is wisdom born of hearing? In matters of action, or in matters of craft, or in matters of knowledge, In matters of right conduct, or that deeds are one's own, or that which conforms to truth, or that form is impermanent, or feeling, or perception, or mental formations, or consciousness is impermanent— whatever such conforming acceptance, view, liking, gladness, expectation, patience in the contemplation of Dhamma, one obtains by hearing from another— this is called "wisdom born of hearing". (Ga) All wisdom of one who has attained (absorption) is wisdom born of development. 769. (2. Ka) Therein, what is wisdom born of giving? Concerning giving, by attaining giving, whatever wisdom, understanding arises— non-delusion, investigation of Dhamma, right view— this is called "wisdom born of giving". (Kha) Therein, what is wisdom born of virtue? Concerning virtue, by attaining virtue, whatever wisdom, understanding arises— non-delusion, investigation of Dhamma, right view— this is called "wisdom born of virtue". (Ga) All wisdom of one who has attained (absorption) is wisdom born of development. 770. (3. Ka) Therein, what is wisdom in higher virtue? Of one observing the restraint of the Pātimokkha, whatever wisdom, understanding arises— non-delusion, investigation of Dhamma, right view— this is called "wisdom in higher virtue". (Kha) Therein, what is wisdom in higher mind? Of one attaining the attainments of the form and formless realms, whatever wisdom, understanding arises— non-delusion, investigation of Dhamma, right view— this is called "wisdom in higher mind". (Ga) Therein, what is wisdom in higher wisdom? Wisdom in the four paths, in the four fruits— this is called "wisdom in higher wisdom". 771. (4. Ka) Therein, what is skill in acquisition? "When one attends to these things, unarisen unwholesome states do not arise, and arisen unwholesome states are abandoned. Or when one attends to these things, unarisen wholesome states arise, and arisen wholesome states lead to increase, to growth, to development, to fulfillment." Whatever wisdom, understanding therein— non-delusion, investigation of Dhamma, right view— this is called "skill in acquisition". (Kha) Therein, what is loss? What is skill in avoiding woe? "When one attends to these states, unarisen wholesome states do not arise, and arisen wholesome states cease. Or when one attends to these other states, unarisen unwholesome states arise, and arisen unwholesome states lead to increase and abundance." That wisdom, understanding... non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view — this is called "skill in avoiding woe." (Ga) All wisdom that is a means to that is skill in means. 772. (5. Ka) Wisdom in results in the four planes is wisdom of results. (Kha) Wisdom in wholesome states in the four planes
