Four analytical knowledges: Knowledge of meaning, Knowledge of phenomena, Knowledge of language, Knowledge of perspicuity. Knowledge of meaning is knowledge of the meaning. Knowledge of phenomena is knowledge of the phenomena. Knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language. Knowledge of knowledges is knowledge of perspicuity. This is the summary section. Four analytical knowledges: Knowledge of meaning, Knowledge of phenomena, Knowledge of language, Knowledge of perspicuity. Knowledge of suffering is knowledge of meaning. Knowledge of the origin of suffering is knowledge of phenomena. Knowledge of the cessation of suffering is knowledge of meaning. Knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of suffering is knowledge of phenomena. Knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language. Knowledge of knowledges is knowledge of perspicuity. This is the truths section. Four analytical knowledges: Knowledge of meaning, Knowledge of phenomena, Knowledge of language, Knowledge of perspicuity. Knowledge of the cause is knowledge of phenomena. Knowledge of the result of the cause is knowledge of meaning. Knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language. Knowledge of knowledges is knowledge of perspicuity. The phenomena that are born, come into being, arisen, produced, manifested, appeared— knowledge of these phenomena is knowledge of meaning. The phenomena from which those phenomena are born, come into being, arisen, produced, manifested, appeared— knowledge of those phenomena is knowledge of phenomena. Knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language. Knowledge of knowledges is knowledge of perspicuity. This is the phenomena section. Knowledge of aging-and-death is knowledge of meaning, knowledge of the origin of aging-and-death is knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of the cessation of aging-and-death is knowledge of meaning, knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of aging-and-death is knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language, knowledge of these knowledges is knowledge of ready wit. 723. The four analytical knowledges – knowledge of meaning, knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of language, knowledge of ready wit. Knowledge of birth... and so on... knowledge of becoming... and so on... knowledge of clinging... and so on... knowledge of craving... and so on... knowledge of feeling... and so on... knowledge of contact... and so on... knowledge of the six sense bases... and so on... knowledge of name-and-form... and so on... knowledge of consciousness... and so on... knowledge of formations is knowledge of meaning, knowledge of the origin of formations is knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of the cessation of formations is knowledge of meaning, knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of formations is knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language, knowledge of these knowledges is knowledge of ready wit. This is the section on Dependent Origination. 6. The Section on Learning 724. The four analytical knowledges – knowledge of meaning, knowledge of phenomena, knowledge of language, knowledge of ready wit. Among these, what is knowledge of phenomena? Here, a monk knows the Dhamma – discourse, mixed prose and verse, exposition, verse, inspired utterance, 'thus-said' discourse, birth story, wondrous phenomenon, analytical discourse. This is called "knowledge of phenomena." He knows the meaning of each of those spoken words – "this is the meaning of this spoken word, this is the meaning of this spoken word." This is called "knowledge of meaning." Knowledge of the expression of those phenomena in language is knowledge of language. Knowledge of these knowledges is knowledge of ready wit. This is the section on learning. Sutta Division. 2. Abhidhamma Division 1. The Section on Wholesome 725. The four analytical knowledges – knowledge of meaning Analytical knowledge, Analytical knowledge of states, Analytical knowledge of language, Analytical knowledge of ready wit. What are wholesome states? At the time when a wholesome mind of the sense-sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, having a visible object or a mental object, or whatever else it may be, at that time there is contact... and non-distraction, these states are wholesome. Knowledge of these states is analytical knowledge of states. Knowledge of their results is analytical knowledge of meaning, by which language there is the designation of these states, knowledge in the expression of that language of states is analytical knowledge of language. By which knowledge one knows those knowledges – "these knowledges illuminate this meaning" – knowledge of knowledges is analytical knowledge of ready wit. 726. Four analytical knowledges – Analytical knowledge of meaning, Analytical knowledge of states, Analytical knowledge of language, Analytical knowledge of ready wit. What are wholesome states? At the time when a wholesome mind of the sense-sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, with prompting, etc., accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge, etc., accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting, etc., accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge, etc., accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge, with prompting, etc., accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, etc., accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting, having a visible object or a mental object, or whatever else it may be, at that time there is contact... and non-distraction. These states are wholesome. Knowledge of these states is analytical knowledge of states. Knowledge of their results is analytical knowledge of meaning. By which language there is the designation of these states, knowledge in the expression of that language of states is analytical knowledge of language. By which knowledge one knows those knowledges – "these knowledges illuminate this meaning" – knowledge of knowledges is analytical knowledge of ready wit. 727. Four analytical knowledges – Analytical knowledge of meaning, Analytical knowledge of states, Analytical knowledge of language. analysis of ready wit. Which phenomena are wholesome? At the time when one develops the path to rebirth in the form realm, quite secluded from sensual pleasures... (and so on)... one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with the earth kasina; at that time there is contact... (and so on)... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. Knowledge in these phenomena is analysis of phenomena. Knowledge in their results is analysis of meaning. The knowledge of the verbal designation of those phenomena, by which expression there is designation of those phenomena, is analysis of expression. The knowledge by which one knows those knowledges – "these knowledges illuminate this meaning" – that knowledge in knowledges is analysis of ready wit. 728. Four analyses – analysis of meaning, analysis of phenomena, analysis of expression, analysis of ready wit. Which phenomena are wholesome? At the time when one develops the path to rebirth in the formless realm, having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, accompanied by the perception of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and by the abandoning of pleasure... (and so on)... one enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna; at that time there is contact... (and so on)... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. Knowledge in these phenomena is analysis of phenomena. Knowledge in their results is analysis of meaning. The knowledge of the verbal designation of those phenomena, by which expression there is designation of those phenomena, is analysis of expression. The knowledge by which one knows those knowledges – "these knowledges illuminate this meaning" – that knowledge in knowledges is analysis of ready wit. 729. Four analyses – analysis of meaning, analysis of phenomena, analysis of expression, analysis of ready wit. Which phenomena are wholesome? At the time when one develops a supramundane jhāna, leading to liberation, leading to the cessation (of kamma), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage (of awakening), quite secluded from sensual pleasures... (and so on)... one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge; at that time there is contact... (and so on)... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. In these phenomena Knowledge of Dhamma is analytical knowledge of Dhamma. Knowledge of their results is analytical knowledge of meaning. The language by which those phenomena are designated, knowledge of the expression of that Dhamma-language is analytical knowledge of language. The knowledge by which one knows those knowledges – 'These knowledges illuminate this meaning' – knowledge of knowledges is analytical knowledge of ready wit. Section on Unwholesome Four analytical knowledges: analytical knowledge of meaning, analytical knowledge of Dhamma, analytical knowledge of language, analytical knowledge of ready wit. What are unwholesome phenomena? At the time when an unwholesome mind arises, accompanied by joy, associated with wrong view, with a visible object, or (etc.) with a mental object, or whatever else it may be focused on, at that time there is contact, (etc.) there is non-distraction. These phenomena are unwholesome. Knowledge of these phenomena is analytical knowledge of Dhamma.
