. These phenomena are wholesome. Of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna, due to its being done, due to its being developed, the result, quite secluded from sensual pleasures... entering and dwelling in the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge, undirected, with zeal as the dominant factor. At that time, there is contact... there is non-distraction... These phenomena are indeterminate. 548. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At what time one develops supramundane jhāna, leading to liberation, leading to the cessation of accumulation, for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage, quite secluded from sensual pleasures... entering and dwelling in the first jhāna... It is a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, with desire as dominance. At that time, contact arises... ...and so on... non-distraction arises... ...and so on... these states are wholesome. Due to the performance and development of that supramundane wholesome jhana, as a result, having secluded from sensual pleasures... ...and so on... he abides having entered the first jhana, a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, signless, with desire as dominance. At that time, contact arises... ...and so on... non-distraction arises... ...and so on... these states are indeterminate. 549. Which states are indeterminate? At the time when one cultivates a supramundane jhana, leading to liberation, leading to the cessation of accumulation, for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage, having secluded from sensual pleasures... ...and so on... he abides having entered the first jhana, a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, with desire as dominance. At that time, contact arises... ...and so on... non-distraction arises... ...and so on... these states are wholesome. Due to the performance and development of that supramundane wholesome jhana, as a result, having secluded from sensual pleasures... ...and so on... he abides having entered the first jhana, a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, empty, with desire as dominance. At that time, contact arises... ...and so on... non-distraction arises... ...and so on... these states are indeterminate. 550. Which states are indeterminate? At the time when one cultivates a supramundane jhana, leading to liberation, leading to the cessation of accumulation, for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage, from the cessation of initial and sustained application... ...and so on... the second jhana... ...and so on... the third jhana... ...and so on... the fourth jhana... ...and so on... the first jhana... ...and so on... he abides having entered the fifth jhana, a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, with desire as dominance, this is wholesome... ...and so on... a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, with desire as dominance, this is a result... ...and so on... a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, with desire as dominance, this is wholesome... ...and so on... a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, signless, with desire as dominance, this is a result... ...and so on... a path of suffering, with slow direct knowledge, unaspired, ch... He develops the supramundane element, He develops the supramundane nutriment, He develops the supramundane contact, He develops the supramundane feeling, He develops the supramundane perception, He develops the supramundane volition, He develops the supramundane consciousness, leading to liberation, leading to the waning (of defilements), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage. Secluded from sensual pleasures, ... he abides having attained the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge, with the dominance of desire. At that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are wholesome. Because of the doing and developing of that very supramundane wholesome jhāna, its result is: secluded from sensual pleasures, ... he abides having attained the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge, emptiness, ... signless, ... undesired, with the dominance of desire, ... with the dominance of energy, ... with the dominance of consciousness, ... with the dominance of investigation. At that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are indeterminate. The result of the first path. The result of the second and subsequent paths. 553. What are the indeterminate phenomena? At the time when one develops the supramundane jhāna, leading to liberation, leading to the waning (of defilements), for the attenuation of sensual passion and ill-will, for the attainment of the second stage, ... for the complete abandoning of sensual passion and ill-will, for the attainment of the third stage, ... for the complete abandoning of passion for form, passion for the formless, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance, for the attainment of the fourth stage. Secluded from sensual pleasures, ... he abides having attained the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge. At that time there is contact, ... there is the faculty of knowing, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are wholesome. Because of the doing and developing of that very supramundane wholesome jhāna, its result is: secluded from sensual pleasures, ... he abides having attained the first jhāna, with painful practice, with slow direct knowledge, emptiness. At that time there is contact, ... there is the faculty of one who has known, ... there is non-distraction, ... or whatever at that time... And other dependently arisen formless phenomena – these phenomena are indeterminate. 554. What is contact at that time? That which is contact at that time, touching, thoroughly touching, the state of having thoroughly touched – this is contact at that time ...and so on.... 555. What is the faculty of knowing the unknown at that time? That which is the knowing of those unknown phenomena, wisdom, understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, investigation of phenomena, discernment, close discernment, immediate discernment, sagacity, skill, shrewdness, analysis, thought, examination, insight, intelligence, guidance, insight, clear comprehension, goad, wisdom, faculty of wisdom, power of wisdom, weapon of wisdom, palace of wisdom, light of wisdom, radiance of wisdom, lamp of wisdom, jewel of wisdom, non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view, the enlightenment factor of investigation of phenomena, a path factor, included in the path – this is the faculty of knowing the unknown at that time ...and so on... and whatever other dependently arisen formless phenomena there are at that time – these phenomena are indeterminate. The result of the second and subsequent paths. Supramundane result. Indeterminate results of unwholesome kamma. The five sense-consciousnesses as results of unwholesome kamma. 556. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when, as a result of unwholesome kamma done and accumulated, eye-consciousness arises accompanied by equanimity, having a visible object as its object ...and so on... ear-consciousness arises accompanied by equanimity, having a sound as its object ...and so on... nose-consciousness arises accompanied by equanimity, having an odor as its object ...and so on... tongue-consciousness arises accompanied by equanimity, having a taste as its object ...and so on... body-consciousness arises accompanied by suffering, having a tangible object as its object, at that time there is contact, there is feeling, there is perception, there is volition, there is consciousness, there is suffering, there is one-pointedness of mind, there is the faculty of mind,
