the stream-entry path is gained. Thus that dhamma is both fully understood and investigated. For one striving to gain the once-returner path, the once-returner path is gained. Thus that dhamma is both fully understood and investigated. For one striving to gain the non-returner path, the non-returner path is gained. Thus that dhamma is both fully understood and investigated. For one striving to gain the Arahant path, the Arahant path is gained. Thus that dhamma is both fully understood and investigated. For one striving to gain whatever dhammas, those dhammas are gained. Thus those dhammas are both fully understood and investigated. That, by way of knowing, is knowledge; by way of understanding, is wisdom. Therefore it is said: "Attention to 'these dhammas are to be fully understood' and the understanding of that is wisdom born of hearing." 23. How is it that "attention to 'these dhammas are to be abandoned'" and the understanding of that is wisdom born of hearing? One dhamma to be abandoned: the conceit 'I am'. Two dhammas to be abandoned: ignorance and craving for existence. Three dhammas to be abandoned: the three cravings. Four dhammas to be abandoned: the four floods. Five dhammas to be abandoned: the five hindrances. Six dhammas to be abandoned: the six groups of craving. Seven dhammas to be abandoned: the seven latent tendencies. Eight dhammas to be abandoned: the eight wrongnesses. Nine dhammas to be abandoned: the nine rooted in craving. Ten dhammas should not be abandoned – the ten wrong ways. 24. Two abandonments: abandonment by cutting off, abandonment by tranquilization. And abandonment by cutting off is when cultivating the supramundane path leading to the destruction (of defilements); and abandonment by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition. Three abandonments: This is the escape from sensual pleasures, namely renunciation; this is the escape from forms, namely the formless attainments; and whatever has come to be, conditioned, dependently originated, its cessation is the escape. For one who has attained renunciation, sensual pleasures are abandoned and relinquished. For one who has attained the formless, forms are abandoned and relinquished. For one who has attained cessation, formations are abandoned and relinquished. Four abandonments: one abandons by penetrating the truth of suffering with penetration by full understanding; one abandons by penetrating the truth of origin with penetration by abandonment; one abandons by penetrating the truth of cessation with penetration by realization; one abandons by penetrating the truth of the path with penetration by development. Five abandonments: abandonment by suppression, abandonment by substitution of opposites, abandonment by cutting off, abandonment by tranquilization, abandonment by escape. And abandonment by suppression is of the hindrances when cultivating the first jhāna; and abandonment by substitution of opposites is of wrong views when cultivating concentration conducive to penetration; and abandonment by cutting off is when cultivating the supramundane path leading to destruction; and abandonment by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition; and abandonment by escape is cessation, Nibbāna. “All, monks, should be abandoned. And what, monks, is all that should be abandoned? The eye, monks, should be abandoned; forms should be abandoned; eye-consciousness should be abandoned; eye-contact should be abandoned; and whatever feeling arises dependent on eye-contact, whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant, that too should be abandoned. The ear should be abandoned; sounds should be abandoned… the nose should be abandoned; odors should be abandoned… the tongue should be abandoned; tastes should be abandoned… the body should be abandoned; tangibles… (The six) should be abandoned... mind should be abandoned; mental objects should be abandoned; mind-consciousness should be abandoned; mind-contact should be abandoned; And whatever feeling arises dependent on mind-contact, whether pleasant or painful or neither-pleasant-nor-painful, that too should be abandoned. Seeing form, one abandons; seeing feeling, one abandons; seeing perception, one abandons; seeing mental formations, one abandons; seeing consciousness, one abandons. Seeing the eye... (and so on)... seeing old age and death... (and so on)... seeing Nibbana, the Deathless, as the ultimate end, one abandons. Whatever phenomena are abandoned, those phenomena are relinquished. That, by way of knowing, is knowledge; by way of understanding, is wisdom. Therefore it is said: "Paying attention to 'these phenomena should be abandoned' that understanding is wisdom, knowledge born of hearing." The Third Recitation Section. 25. How is "paying attention to 'these phenomena should be developed'" that understanding wisdom, knowledge born of hearing? One phenomenon should be developed – mindfulness of the body accompanied by happiness. Two phenomena should be developed – tranquility and insight. Three phenomena should be developed – the three concentrations. Four phenomena should be developed – the four foundations of mindfulness. Five phenomena should be developed – the five-factored concentration. Six phenomena should be developed – the six recollections. Seven phenomena should be developed – the seven factors of awakening. Eight phenomena should be developed – the Noble Eightfold Path. Nine phenomena should be developed – the nine factors of purification and exertion. Ten phenomena should be developed – the ten kasina bases. 26. Two kinds of development – worldly development and supramundane development. Three kinds of development – development of wholesome phenomena of the form sphere, development of wholesome phenomena of the formless sphere, development of wholesome phenomena not included (in either). Development of wholesome phenomena of the form sphere is inferior, is middling, is excellent. Development of wholesome phenomena of the formless sphere is inferior, is middling, is excellent. Not included... The development of wholesome states is excellent. 27. Four developments: One develops by penetrating the penetration of full understanding of the truth of suffering. One develops by penetrating the penetration of abandonment of the truth of origin. One develops by penetrating the penetration of realization of the truth of cessation. One develops by penetrating the penetration of development of the truth of the path. These are the four developments. Also another four developments: The development of seeking, The development of acquisition, The development of single taste, The development of repeated practice. What is the development of seeking? For all who enter into concentration, the states arisen there are of a single taste— this is the development of seeking. What is the development of acquisition? For all who have attained concentration, the states arisen there do not surpass one another— this is the development of acquisition. What is the development of single taste? For one developing the faculty of faith by way of conviction, by means of the faculty of faith, the four faculties are of a single taste— this is the development of the faculties by way of single taste. For one developing the faculty of energy by way of exertion, by means of the faculty of energy, the four faculties are of a single taste— this is the development of the faculties by way of single taste. For one developing the faculty of mindfulness by way of establishment, by means of the faculty of mindfulness, the four faculties are of a single taste— this is the development of the faculties by way of single taste. For one developing the faculty of concentration by way of non-distraction, by means of the faculty of concentration, the four faculties are of a single taste— this is the development of the faculties by way of single taste. For one developing the faculty of wisdom by way of seeing, by means of the faculty of wisdom, the four faculties are of a single taste— this is the development of the faculties by way of single taste. For one developing the power of faith by way of unshakeability in faithlessness, by means of the power of faith, the four powers are of a single taste— this is the development of the powers by way of single taste. For one developing the power of energy by way of unshakeability in idleness, by means of the power of energy, the four powers are of a single taste— this is the development of the powers by way of single taste. By way of unshakeability in heedlessness, Developing the power of mindfulness, by means of the power of mindfulness, the four powers become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the powers. Developing the power of concentration, by its unshakeable nature in regard to agitation, by means of the power of concentration, the four powers become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the powers. Developing the power of wisdom, by its unshakeable nature in regard to ignorance, by means of the power of wisdom, the four powers become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the powers. Developing the mindfulness factor of awakening, by its nature of presence, by means of the mindfulness factor of awakening, the six factors of awakening become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the factors of awakening. Developing the investigation of phenomena factor of awakening, by its nature of investigation, by means of the investigation of phenomena factor of awakening, the six factors of awakening become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the factors of awakening. Developing the energy factor of awakening, by its nature of exertion, by means of the energy factor of awakening, the six factors of awakening become of one taste. Thus, development by the one-taste nature of the factors of awakening. Developing the rapture factor of awakening,
