By the meaning of exertion, right strivings are to be fully understood; By the meaning of success, bases of power are to be fully understood; By the meaning of suchness, truths are to be fully understood; By the meaning of non-distraction, tranquility is to be fully understood; By the meaning of contemplation, insight is to be fully understood; By the meaning of single taste, tranquility and insight are to be fully understood; By the meaning of non-transgression, the conjoined pair is to be fully understood. By the meaning of restraint, purity of virtue is to be fully understood; By the meaning of non-distraction, purity of mind is to be fully understood; By the meaning of seeing, purity of view is to be fully understood; By the meaning of release, liberation is to be fully understood; By the meaning of penetration, knowledge is to be fully understood; By the meaning of relinquishment, deliverance is to be fully understood; By the meaning of cutting off, knowledge of destruction is to be fully understood; By the meaning of calming, knowledge of non-arising is to be fully understood. 20. By the meaning of root, desire is to be fully understood; By the meaning of origination, attention is to be fully understood; By the meaning of conjunction, contact is to be fully understood; By the meaning of convergence, feeling is to be fully understood; By the meaning of foremost, concentration is to be fully understood; By the meaning of dominance, mindfulness is to be fully understood; By the meaning of surpassing, wisdom is to be fully understood; By the meaning of essence, deliverance is to be fully understood; By the meaning of culmination, Nibbāna, the Deathless, is to be fully understood. Whatever phenomena are fully understood, those phenomena are known. That, by the meaning of knowing, is knowledge; by the meaning of discerning, is wisdom. Therefore it is said: "These phenomena are to be fully understood" is listening with attention; "that discerning wisdom is knowledge born of hearing." Second Recitation Section. 21. How is "These phenomena are to be fully comprehended" listening with attention, that discerning wisdom, knowledge born of hearing? One phenomenon is to be fully comprehended – contact, with effluents, conducive to clinging. Two phenomena are to be fully comprehended – name and form. Three phenomena are to be fully comprehended – three feelings. Four phenomena are to be fully comprehended – four nutriments. Five phenomena are to be fully comprehended – five aggregates of clinging. Six phenomena are to be fully comprehended – six internal The internal sense bases. Seven things to be fully understood – seven stations of consciousness. Eight things to be fully understood – eight worldly conditions. Nine things to be fully understood – nine abodes of beings. Ten things to be fully understood – ten sense bases. “Everything, monks, is to be fully understood. And what, monks, is everything to be fully understood? The eye, monks, is to be fully understood; forms are to be fully understood; eye-consciousness is to be fully understood; eye-contact is to be fully understood; and whatever feeling arises dependent on eye-contact— whether pleasant or painful or neither-pleasant-nor-painful— that too is to be fully understood. The ear is to be fully understood; sounds are to be fully understood... the nose is to be fully understood; odors are to be fully understood... the tongue is to be fully understood; tastes are to be fully understood... the body is to be fully understood; tangibles are to be fully understood... the mind is to be fully understood; mental phenomena are to be fully understood... mind-consciousness is to be fully understood; mind-contact is to be fully understood; and whatever feeling arises dependent on mind-contact— whether pleasant or painful or neither-pleasant-nor-painful— that too is to be fully understood.” Form is to be fully understood... feeling is to be fully understood... perception is to be fully understood... volitional formations are to be fully understood... consciousness is to be fully understood... the eye is to be fully understood... aging-and-death is to be fully understood... the Deathless, Nibbana, is to be fully understood as the ultimate goal. For whoever strives to attain certain things, and those things are attained by them, thus those things are fully understood and fully comprehended. 22. For whoever strives to attain renunciation, renunciation is attained by them. Thus that thing is fully understood and fully comprehended. For whoever strives to attain non-ill-will, non-ill-will is attained by them. Thus that thing is fully understood and fully comprehended. For whoever strives to attain the perception of light, the perception of light is attained by them. Thus that thing is fully understood and fully comprehended. For whoever strives to attain non-distraction, non-distraction is attained by them. Thus that thing is fully understood and fully comprehended. is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the discernment of Dhamma, the discernment of Dhamma is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain knowledge, knowledge is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain joy, joy is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the first jhana, the first jhana is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the second jhana, the second jhana is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the third jhana, the third jhana is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the fourth jhana, the fourth jhana is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the attainment of the dimension of infinite space, the attainment of the dimension of infinite space is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the attainment of the dimension of infinite consciousness, the attainment of the dimension of infinite consciousness is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the attainment of the dimension of nothingness, the attainment of the dimension of nothingness is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain the attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, the attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain contemplation of impermanence, contemplation of impermanence is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain contemplation of suffering, contemplation of suffering is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. For one striving to attain contemplation of non-self, contemplation of non-self is attained. Thus, that Dhamma is fully understood and thoroughly investigated. It is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of disenchantment, the contemplation of disenchantment is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of dispassion, the contemplation of dispassion is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of cessation, the contemplation of cessation is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of relinquishment, the contemplation of relinquishment is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of destruction, the contemplation of destruction is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of vanishing, the contemplation of vanishing is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of transformation, the contemplation of transformation is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of the signless, the contemplation of the signless is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of the desireless, the contemplation of the desireless is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain the contemplation of emptiness, the contemplation of emptiness is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain higher wisdom insight into phenomena, higher wisdom insight into phenomena is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. For one striving to gain knowledge and vision of things as they really are, knowledge and vision of things as they really are is gained. Thus that phenomenon is fully known and fully understood. Disadvantage For one striving to gain the contemplation of drawbacks, the contemplation of drawbacks is gained. Thus that dhamma is both fully understood and investigated.
