Contemplation of suffering, knowledge of the supreme state of coolness, from pleasure, from burning, distress, and torment is released. Thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of non-self, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of self, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of disenchantment, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of delight, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of dispassion, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of passion, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of cessation, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of origination, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of relinquishment, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of grasping, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of the signless, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of signs, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of the desireless, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of aspiration, thus – the liberation of coolness. Contemplation of emptiness, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of clinging, thus – the liberation of coolness. Thus there is one liberation of coolness; there are ten liberations of coolness; ten liberations of coolness are one liberation of coolness, by way of object and by way of method. In form, contemplation of impermanence, knowledge of supreme coolness, is liberated from the burning, fever, and torment of permanence, thus – the liberation of coolness. ... Ten cool-state liberations become one cool-state liberation by way of object, by way of method— this is the cool-state liberation. 217. What is liberation through jhāna? Renunciation burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up sensual desire, thus it is jhāna. Burning, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. Causing to burn, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. They burn, thus they are states. It burns up, thus it burns defilements. One knows both what burns and what is burnt up, thus it is liberation through jhāna. Non-ill-will burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up ill-will, thus it is jhāna. Burning, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. Causing to burn, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. They burn, thus they are states. It burns up, thus it burns defilements. One knows both what burns and what is burnt up, thus it is liberation through jhāna. The perception of light burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up sloth and torpor, thus it is jhāna… Non-distraction burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up restlessness, thus it is jhāna. The discernment of phenomena burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up doubt, thus it is jhāna. Knowledge burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up ignorance, thus it is jhāna. Joy burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up discontent, thus it is jhāna. The first jhāna burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up hindrances, thus it is jhāna… The path of arahantship burns, thus it is jhāna. It burns up all defilements, thus it is jhāna. Burning, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. Causing to burn, one is liberated, thus it is liberation through jhāna. They burn, thus they are states. It burns up, thus it burns defilements. One knows both what burns and what is burnt up, thus it is liberation through jhāna— this is liberation through jhāna. 218. What is the liberation of the mind without clinging? There may be one liberation of the mind without clinging, there are ten liberations of the mind without clinging. Ten liberations of the mind without clinging become one liberation of the mind without clinging by way of object, by way of method. And how may it be? The knowledge of insight into impermanence (frees) from clinging to permanence… Freed from grasping – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating suffering, is freed from grasping it as pleasure – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating non-self, is freed from grasping it as self – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating disenchantment, is freed from grasping it as delight – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating dispassion, is freed from grasping it as passion – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating cessation, is freed from grasping it as origination – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating relinquishment, is freed from grasping it as taking – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating the signless, is freed from grasping it as a sign – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating the desireless, is freed from grasping it as desire – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind. The knowledge of contemplating emptiness, is freed from grasping it as adherence – this is the liberation of the non-clinging mind.
