This is release through desirelessness. What is release arisen internally? The four jhanas. This is release arisen internally. What is release arisen externally? The four formless attainments. This is release arisen externally. What is release arisen from both? The four noble paths. This is release arisen from both. What are the four releases arisen internally? The first jhana arises from hindrances. The second jhana arises from initial and sustained application. The third jhana arises from rapture. The fourth jhana arises from pleasure and pain. These are the four releases arisen internally. What are the four releases arisen externally? The attainment of the dimension of infinite space arises from perception of form, perception of resistance, perception of diversity. The attainment of the dimension of infinite consciousness arises from the perception of the dimension of infinite space. The attainment of the dimension of nothingness arises from the perception of the dimension of infinite consciousness. The attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception The attainment of the sphere of nothingness emerges by the perception of the sphere of nothingness. These are the four external liberations. Which are the four liberations emerging from both? The Stream-entry path emerges from personality view, doubt, and adherence to rites and rituals, from the latent tendencies of views and doubt, and from the defilements and aggregates that follow them, and from all external signs. The Once-returner path emerges from gross sensual desire fetters and aversion fetters, from gross latent tendencies of sensual desire and aversion, and from the defilements and aggregates that follow them, and from all external signs. The Non-returner path emerges from subtle sensual desire fetters and aversion fetters, from subtle latent tendencies of sensual desire and aversion, and from the defilements and aggregates that follow them, and from all external signs. The Arahantship path emerges from craving for form, craving for formlessness, conceit, restlessness, ignorance, from the latent tendencies of conceit, craving for existence, and ignorance, and from the defilements and aggregates that follow them, and from all external signs. These are the four liberations emerging from both. Which are the four liberations in accordance with internal emergence? For the attainment of the first jhana: applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. For the attainment of the second jhana... For the attainment of the third jhana... For the attainment of the fourth jhana: applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. These are the four liberations in accordance with internal emergence. Which are the four liberations in accordance with external emergence? For the attainment of the sphere of infinite space: applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. For the attainment of the sphere of infinite consciousness... For the attainment of the sphere of nothingness... For the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception: applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. These are the four liberations in due order of external risings. Which are the four liberations in due order of risings from both sides? For the attainment of the stream-entry path: contemplation of impermanence, contemplation of suffering, contemplation of non-self. For the attainment of the once-returner path... For the attainment of the non-returner path... For the attainment of the arahantship path: contemplation of impermanence, contemplation of suffering, contemplation of non-self. These are the four liberations in due order of risings from both sides. Which are the four liberations, the pacifications of internal risings? The attainment or result of the first jhana, of the second jhana... of the third jhana... the attainment or result of the fourth jhana. These are the four liberations, the pacifications of internal risings. Which are the four liberations, the pacifications of external risings? The attainment or result of the dimension of infinite space, of the dimension of infinite consciousness... of the dimension of nothingness... the attainment or result of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. These are the four liberations, the pacifications of external risings. Which are the four liberations, the pacifications of risings from both sides? The fruit of stream-entry for the stream-entry path, the fruit of once-returning for the once-returner path, the fruit of non-returning for the non-returner path, the fruit of arahantship for the arahantship path. These are the four liberations, the pacifications of risings from both sides. 212. How does one, being material, see material forms – a liberation? Here, someone internally, personally, attends to a blue sign, obtains the perception of blue. He makes that sign well-grasped, well-established, he establishes it, well-fixed, he fixes it. Having made that sign well-grasped, having established it well-established, having fixed it well-fixed, he directs his mind to an external blue sign, he obtains the perception of blue. He makes that sign well-grasped, well-established... He attends to it, he establishes it well. Having grasped that sign well, having attended to it, having established it well, he cultivates it, develops it, makes it much. To him it occurs: "This form is both internal and external," he is conscious of form. Here, someone attends to the yellow sign within himself, personally... ...to the red sign... ...to the white sign, he obtains the perception of white. He grasps that sign well, he attends to it well, he establishes it well. Having grasped that sign well, having attended to it well, having established it well, he directs his mind to the white sign externally, he obtains the perception of white. He grasps that sign well, he attends to it well, he establishes it well. Having grasped that sign well, having attended to it well, having established it well, he cultivates it, develops it, makes it much. To him it occurs: "This form is both internal and external," he is conscious of form. Thus, being with form, he sees forms – this is a liberation. How is it a liberation when, being without form internally, he sees forms externally? Here, someone does not attend to the blue sign within himself, personally, he does not obtain the perception of blue; he directs his mind to the blue sign externally, he obtains the perception of blue. He grasps that sign well, he attends to it well, he establishes it well. Having grasped that sign well, having attended to it well, having established it well, he cultivates it, develops it, makes it much. To him it occurs: "Internally it is formless, externally this is form," he is conscious of form. Here, someone does not attend to the yellow sign within himself, personally... ...to the red sign... ...to the white sign, he does not obtain the perception of white; he directs his mind to the white sign externally, he obtains the perception of white. He grasps that He makes the sign well-grasped, holds it well in mind, establishes it well. Having made that sign well-grasped, having held it well in mind, having established it well, he cultivates it, develops it, makes it much of. To him it occurs thus: "Within, there is no form; outside, there is this form." He is conscious of form. Thus, being conscious of no form within, he sees forms outside – this is liberation. How is it that he is intent on "beautiful" – this is liberation? Here, a monk dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus, above, below, across, everywhere, in all ways, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, without ill-will. Because of the development of loving-kindness, beings are not repellent. With a mind imbued with compassion, he dwells pervading one direction, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus, above, below, across, everywhere, in all ways, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with compassion, abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, without ill-will. Because of the development of compassion, beings are not repellent. With a mind imbued with appreciative joy, he dwells pervading one direction, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus, above, below, across, everywhere, in all ways, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with appreciative joy, abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, without ill-will. Because of the development of appreciative joy, beings are not repellent. With a mind imbued with equanimity, he dwells pervading one direction, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus, above, below, across, everywhere, in all ways, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity, abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, without ill-will. Because of the development of equanimity, beings are not repellent. Thus, he is intent on "beautiful" – this is liberation. 213. What is the liberation of the attainment of the dimension of infinite space? Here, a monk, by completely transcending perceptions of form, by the disappearance of perceptions of sensory impact, by not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking "space is infinite," enters and dwells in the dimension of infinite space – this is the liberation of the attainment of the dimension of infinite space. What is the liberation of the attainment of the dimension of infinite consciousness? Here, a monk, by completely transcending the dimension of infinite space, thinking "consciousness is infinite,"
