Sloth and torpor is non-effacement, Perception of light is effacement. Restlessness is non-effacement, Non-distraction is effacement. Doubt is non-effacement, Determination of Dhamma is effacement. Ignorance is non-effacement, Knowledge is effacement. Discontent is non-effacement, Joy is effacement. Hindrances are non-effacement, The first jhana is effacement... All defilements are non-effacement, The path of arahantship is effacement. That is knowledge by way of knowing, Wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom is knowledge in the sense of effacement, Overcoming the various powers of diversity." The thirty-seventh exposition of knowledge in the sense of effacement. 38. The exposition of knowledge of the arousal of energy. 89. How is wisdom, in the sense of being unflagging, resolute, and exerting, knowledge of the arousal of energy? Wisdom, in the sense of being unflagging, resolute, and exerting, for the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states, is knowledge of the arousal of energy. Wisdom, in the sense of being unflagging, resolute, and exerting, for the abandoning of arisen evil unwholesome states, is knowledge of the arousal of energy. For the arising of unarisen wholesome states... For the arising, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the continuance, for the non-confusion, for the increase, for the growth, for the development, for the completion of wholesome states that have arisen, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the non-arising of unarisen sensual desire, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the abandoning of arisen sensual desire, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the arising of unarisen renunciation, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the continuance, for the non-confusion, for the increase, for the growth, for the development, for the completion of arisen renunciation, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort... and so on. For the non-arising of all unarisen defilements, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the abandoning of all arisen defilements, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort... and so on. For the arising of the unarisen path of arahantship, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. For the continuance, for the non-confusion, for the increase, for the growth, for the development, for the completion of the arisen path of arahantship, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven, wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort. That is knowledge in the sense of knowing, wisdom in the sense of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom is knowledge in the initiation of effort, in the sense of not being slack, of having exerted oneself, of having striven." The thirty-eighth is the exposition of knowledge in the initiation of effort. 39. The exposition of knowledge in the display of meaning. 90. How is wisdom knowledge in the display of meaning as the manifestation of various phenomena? Various phenomena are: the five aggregates, the twelve sense bases, the eighteen elements, wholesome phenomena, unwholesome phenomena, indeterminate phenomena, phenomena of the sense sphere, phenomena of the form sphere, phenomena of the formless sphere, phenomena not included. The manifestation is: it manifests form as impermanent, it manifests form as suffering, he lies down, he proclaims form as not-self. Feeling… perception… formations… consciousness… eye… old age and death he proclaims as impermanent, old age and death he proclaims as suffering, old age and death he proclaims as not-self. By "revealing the meaning," abandoning sensual desire, he reveals the meaning of renunciation. Abandoning ill-will, he reveals the meaning of non-ill-will. Abandoning sloth and torpor, he reveals the meaning of the perception of light. Abandoning restlessness, he reveals the meaning of non-distraction. Abandoning doubt, he reveals the meaning of the ascertainment of phenomena. Abandoning ignorance, he reveals the meaning of knowledge. Abandoning discontent, he reveals the meaning of joy. Abandoning the hindrances, he reveals the meaning of the first jhāna… abandoning all defilements, he reveals the meaning of the path to arahantship. That is knowledge by way of being known, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom is the proclamation of various phenomena, knowledge is the revealing of the meaning." The Ninetieth Section: The Exposition of Knowledge of Revealing the Meaning. 40. The Exposition of Knowledge of Purity of View 91. How is wisdom, in the penetration of the unity and diversity of all phenomena in a single collection, knowledge of purity of view? "Of all phenomena" means the five aggregates… unincluded phenomena. "In a single collection" means all phenomena are collected into one in twelve ways. By way of suchness, by way of not-self, by way of truth, by way of penetration, by way of direct knowledge, by way of full understanding, by way of phenomenon, by way of element, by way of being known, by way of realization, by way of contact, by way of comprehension – in these twelve ways all phenomena are collected into one. "Diversity and unity" means sensual desire is diversity, renunciation is unity… all defilements are diversity, the path to arahantship is unity. "Penetrates" means he penetrates the truth of suffering with the penetration of full understanding. He penetrates the truth of origin with the penetration of abandonment. He penetrates the truth of cessation with the penetration of realization. He penetrates the truth of the path with the penetration of development. "Purity of view" means the path of stream-entry. At the moment of the path, vision is purified; at the moment of the fruit of stream-entry, vision is purified. At the moment of the once-returner path, vision is purified; at the moment of the once-returner fruit, vision is purified. At the moment of the non-returner path, vision is purified; at the moment of the non-returner fruit, vision is purified. At the moment of the Arahant path, vision is purified; at the moment of the Arahant fruit, vision is purified. That, in the sense of knowing, is knowledge; in the sense of understanding, it is wisdom. Therefore it is said – "Wisdom in the penetration of the unity and diversity of all phenomena, gathered into one, is the knowledge of the purification of vision." Form is known as impermanent, form is known as suffering, form is known as not-self. Whatever is known, that is endured – thus, wisdom by being known is the knowledge of patience. How is wisdom, by being experienced, the knowledge of penetration? Form is experienced as impermanent, form is experienced as suffering, form is experienced as not-self. Whatever it experiences, that it penetrates – thus, wisdom by being experienced is the knowledge of penetration. Feeling... and so on... perception... formations... consciousness... eye... and so on... aging-and-death is experienced as impermanent, is experienced as suffering, is experienced as not-self. Whatever it experiences, that it penetrates – thus, wisdom by being experienced is the knowledge of penetration.
