feeling arises from the appeasement of right liberation. Feeling arises from desire, feeling arises from the appeasement of desire. Feeling arises from thought, feeling arises from the appeasement of thought. Feeling arises from perception, feeling arises from the appeasement of perception. And if desire is not appeased, and if thought is not appeased, and if perception is not appeased, feeling also arises from that. And if desire is appeased, and if thought is not appeased, and if perception is not appeased, feeling also arises from that. And if desire is appeased, and if thought is appeased, and if perception is not appeased, feeling also arises from that. And if desire is appeased, and if thought is appeased, and if perception is appeased, feeling also arises from that. For the attainment of what is not yet attained, there is defilement; even in that state not yet attained, feeling also arises from that. That is knowledge by way of knowing, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom in comprehension is knowledge of partial abiding." How is wisdom by way of dominance, knowledge in the revolving of perceptions? Wisdom by way of dominance, revolves perception from sensual desire, by way of renunciation's dominance. Thus, wisdom by way of dominance is knowledge in the revolving of perceptions. Wisdom by way of dominance, Wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of the perception of light, wisdom, perception turns away from sloth and torpor— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of non-distraction, wisdom, perception turns away from restlessness— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of the discernment of phenomena, wisdom, perception turns away from doubt— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of knowledge, wisdom, perception turns away from ignorance— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of joy, wisdom, perception turns away from discontent— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. Because of the dominance of the first jhāna, wisdom, perception turns away from the hindrances— because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception. (...) That is knowledge in the sense of being known, wisdom in the sense of knowing thoroughly. Therefore it is said: "Because of dominance, wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of perception." 96. How is wisdom knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity? Sensual desire is diversity, renunciation is unity. When one intends the unity of renunciation, the mind turns away from sensual desire— wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity. Ill-will is diversity, non-ill-will is unity. When one intends the unity of non-ill-will, the mind turns away from ill-will— wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity. Sloth and torpor are diversity, the perception of light is unity. When one intends the unity of the perception of light, the mind turns away from sloth and torpor— wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity. (...) All defilements are diversity, the path of arahantship is unity. When one intends the unity of the path of arahantship, the mind turns away from all defilements— wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity. That is knowledge in the sense of being known, wisdom in the sense of knowing thoroughly. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom is knowledge in the turning away of consciousness in diversity." 97. How is wisdom knowledge in the turning away of mind by resolution? Abandoning sensual desire, the mind (resolves) by way of renunciation... Wisdom in determination, knowledge in the turning away of the mind. Abandoning ill-will, resolving the mind by way of non-ill-will: wisdom in determination, knowledge in the turning away of the mind. Abandoning sloth and torpor, resolving the mind by way of the perception of light: wisdom in determination, knowledge in the turning away of the mind. ...and so on... Abandoning all defilements, resolving the mind by way of the path of arahantship: wisdom in determination, knowledge in the turning away of the mind. That is knowledge by way of knowing, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom in determination, knowledge in the turning away of the mind." 98. How is wisdom in emptiness, knowledge in the turning away of knowledge? "The eye is empty of self or what belongs to self, of permanence or stability, of eternality or of a nature that does not change" — for one who knows and sees things as they truly are, knowledge turns away from attachment to the eye: wisdom in emptiness, knowledge in the turning away of knowledge. "The ear is empty... ...and so on... the nose is empty... the tongue is empty... the body is empty... the mind is empty of self or what belongs to self, of permanence or stability, of eternality or of a nature that does not change" — for one who knows and sees things as they truly are, knowledge turns away from attachment to the mind: wisdom in emptiness, knowledge in the turning away of knowledge. That is knowledge by way of knowing, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom in emptiness, knowledge in the turning away of knowledge." 99. How is wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation? Relinquishing sensual desire through renunciation: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. Relinquishing ill-will through non-ill-will: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. Relinquishing sloth and torpor through the perception of light: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. Relinquishing restlessness through undistractedness: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. Relinquishing doubt through the discernment of phenomena: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. ...and so on... Relinquishing all defilements through the path of arahantship: wisdom in relinquishment, knowledge in the turning away of liberation. Knowledge in the turning away. That is knowledge by way of knowing, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said: “Wisdom in relinquishing, knowledge in the turning away of liberation.” 100. How is wisdom in the true nature, knowledge in the turning away of truth? Understanding suffering by way of oppression, by way of being conditioned, by way of torment, by way of change, one turns away – thus, wisdom in the true nature, knowledge in the turning away of truth. Abandoning the origin by way of accumulation, by way of cause, by way of conjunction, by way of impediment, one turns away – thus, wisdom in the true nature, knowledge in the turning away of truth. Realizing cessation by way of escape, by way of seclusion, by way of the unconditioned, by way of the deathless, one turns away – thus, wisdom in the true nature, knowledge in the turning away of truth. Developing the path by way of leading out, by way of cause, by way of seeing, by way of mastery, one turns away – thus, wisdom in the true nature, knowledge in the turning away of truth. The turning away of perception, the turning away of mental formation, the turning away of consciousness, the turning away of knowledge, the turning away of liberation, the turning away of truth. Perceiving, one turns away – this is the turning away of perception. Mentally forming, one turns away – this is the turning away of mental formation. Cognizing, one turns away – this is the turning away of consciousness. Making knowledge, one turns away – this is the turning away of knowledge. Relinquishing, one turns away – this is the turning away of liberation. In the true nature, one turns away – this is the turning away of truth. Where there is the turning away of perception, there is the turning away of mental formation. Where there is the turning away of mental formation, there is the turning away of perception. Where there is the turning away of perception and mental formation, there is the turning away of consciousness. Where there is the turning away of consciousness, there is the turning away of perception and mental formation. Where there is the turning away of perception, mental formation, and consciousness, there is the turning away of knowledge. Where there is the turning away of knowledge, there is the turning away of perception, mental formation, and consciousness. Where there is the turning away of perception, mental formation, consciousness, and knowledge, there is the turning away of liberation. Where there is the turning away of liberation, there is the turning away of perception, mental formation, consciousness, and knowledge. Where there is the turning away of perception, mental formation, consciousness, knowledge, and liberation, there is the turning away of truth. Where there is the turning away of truth, there is perception... Unfolded is the mind's unfolding, the thought's unfolding, knowledge's unfolding, liberation's unfolding. That is knowledge by way of knowing, understanding by way of discerning. Therefore it is said: "Understanding in reality, knowledge in the unfolding of truths."
