The mind's one-pointedness, non-distraction, is concentration. By means of that concentration, knowledge arises. By means of that knowledge, the taints are destroyed. Thus, first calm, then knowledge. By means of that knowledge, there is the destruction of the taints. Therefore it is said: "Knowledge in immediate concentration, due to the purity of non-distraction, is wisdom in the eradication of the taints." What are these taints? The taint of sensuality, the taint of existence, the taint of views, the taint of ignorance. Where are these taints destroyed? By the path of stream-entry, the taint of views is completely destroyed, the taint of sensuality leading to lower realms is destroyed, the taint of existence leading to lower realms is destroyed, the taint of ignorance leading to lower realms is destroyed. Here these taints are destroyed. By the path of once-returning, the gross taint of sensuality is destroyed, the corresponding taint of existence is destroyed, the corresponding taint of ignorance is destroyed. Here these taints are destroyed. By the path of non-returning, the taint of sensuality is completely destroyed, the corresponding taint of existence is destroyed, the corresponding taint of ignorance is destroyed. Here these taints are destroyed. By the path of arahantship, the taint of existence is completely destroyed, the taint of ignorance is completely destroyed. The outflow of ignorance is exhausted. Thus these outflows are exhausted. That is knowledge by way of knowing, wisdom by way of understanding. Therefore it is said – "Wisdom in the eradication of outflows, due to unscattered purity, is knowledge in immediate concentration." The thirty-second exposition of knowledge in immediate concentration. 33. The exposition of knowledge of the peaceful abiding 82. How is the dominance of insight, the attainment of peaceful abiding, the inclination towards the sublime, wisdom, knowledge in the peaceful abiding? Dominance of insight means the contemplation of impermanence is the dominance of insight, the contemplation of suffering is the dominance of insight, the contemplation of non-self is the dominance of insight, the contemplation of impermanence in form is the dominance of insight, the contemplation of suffering in form is the dominance of insight, the contemplation of non-self in form is the dominance of insight; in feeling... and so on... in perception... in mental formations... in consciousness... in the eye... and so on... in old age and death, the contemplation of impermanence is the dominance of insight, in old age and death, the contemplation of suffering is the dominance of insight, in old age and death, the contemplation of non-self is the dominance of insight. The attainment of peaceful abiding means the empty abiding is the attainment of peaceful abiding. The signless abiding is the attainment of peaceful abiding. The desireless abiding is the attainment of peaceful abiding. Inclination towards the sublime means inclination towards emptiness is inclination towards the sublime. Inclination towards the signless is inclination towards the sublime. Inclination towards the desireless is inclination towards the sublime. Peaceful abiding means the first jhana is peaceful abiding. The second jhana is peaceful abiding. The third jhana is peaceful abiding. The fourth jhana is peaceful abiding. The attainment of the dimension of infinite space is peaceful abiding... and so on... the attainment of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception is peaceful abiding. Peaceful abiding, in what sense is it peaceful abiding? By the first jhana, it removes hindrances – thus, peaceful abiding. By the second jhana, it removes initial and sustained thought – thus, peaceful abiding. By the third jhana, it removes rapture – thus, peaceful abiding. By the fourth jhana, it removes pleasure and pain – thus, peaceful abiding. By the attainment of the dimension of infinite space, the perception of form, the perception of resistance, the diversity... It removes the perception of that – this is the dwelling without defilements. By the attainment of the sphere of infinite consciousness, it removes the perception of the sphere of infinite space – this is the dwelling without defilements. By the attainment of the sphere of nothingness, it removes the perception of the sphere of infinite consciousness – this is the dwelling without defilements. By the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, it removes the perception of the sphere of nothingness – this is the dwelling without defilements. This is the dwelling without defilements. That, by way of knowing, is knowledge; by way of understanding, is wisdom. Therefore it is said – ‘‘mastery of vision, and the attainment of peaceful dwelling, inclination towards the sublime, wisdom, is knowledge in the dwelling without defilements.’’ The thirty-third exposition of the knowledge of the dwelling without defilements. 34. The exposition of the knowledge of the attainment of cessation. 83. How is wisdom, by being endowed with two powers, and by the calming of the three formations, by sixteen courses of knowledge, by nine courses of concentration, by mastery, knowledge in the attainment of cessation? By two powers, these are two powers – the power of tranquility, the power of insight. Which is the power of tranquility?
