Not, while he walks on a low path, should one walk on a high path. Not, while he walks on the ground, should one walk on a path. Not, O monks, by a monk deserving mānatta, with a monk undergoing parivāsa... with a monk deserving to be sent back to the beginning... with a monk deserving mānatta who is senior... with a monk undergoing mānatta... with a monk... ...with a monk worthy of rehabilitation should dwell in a single-roofed dwelling, should not dwell in a single-roofed non-dwelling, should not dwell in a single-roofed dwelling or non-dwelling; should not sit on the same seat, should not sit on a high seat when another is sitting on a low seat, should not sit on a seat when another is sitting on the ground; should not walk on the same walking path, should not walk on a high walking path when another is walking on a low walking path, should not walk on a walking path when another is walking on the ground. [mahāva. 393] ‘‘If, monks, a fourth monk worthy of penance should give probation, should send back to the beginning, should give penance, should rehabilitate twenty (monks), it is not an act, and it should not be done.’’ The practice for one worthy of penance is finished. 4. The Practice for One Undergoing Penance 90. Now at that time, monks undergoing penance accepted from ordinary monks salutation, rising to greet, the act of joining hands, respectful service, offering a seat, offering a couch, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-towel, receiving bowl and robe, and back-rubbing during bathing. Those monks who were of few desires... ...they complained, grumbled, and criticized – ‘‘How can monks undergoing penance accept salutation, rising to greet... ...back-rubbing during bathing from ordinary monks!’’ Then those monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on account of this cause, on account of this matter, having assembled the community of monks, questioned the monks – ‘‘Is it true, monks, that monks undergoing penance accept salutation, rising to greet... ...back-rubbing during bathing from ordinary monks?’’ ‘‘It is true, Blessed One.’’ The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked – ‘‘This is unfitting... ...How can, monks, monks undergoing penance accept salutation... ...back-rubbing during bathing from ordinary monks! This, monks, is not for the conviction of the unconvinced... … having censured…pe… having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the monks: “Monks, a monk undergoing penance should not accept the salutation, rising to greet, the gesture of reverence, the proper conduct, the offering of a seat, the offering of a couch, the water for the feet, the footstool, the foot-towel, the receiving of bowl and robe, the back-rub during bathing, from monks who are in good standing. Whoever accepts it, commits an offense of wrong-doing. Monks, I permit monks undergoing penance to perform these mutually, according to seniority: salutation, rising to greet…pe… back-rub during bathing. Monks, I permit monks undergoing penance five things according to seniority: Uposatha, Pavāraṇā, rainy-season robe, invitation, meal.
