2. Chapter on Probation 1. The Practice of Probation 75. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time, bhikkhus on probation accepted from ordinary bhikkhus salutations, rising to greet, reverential gestures, polite services, bringing of seats, bringing of beds, water for feet, footstools, foot-towels, receiving of bowls and robes, and back-rubbing during bathing. Those bhikkhus who were of few desires…pe… they complained, grumbled, and criticized, saying, “How can bhikkhus on probation accept from ordinary bhikkhus salutations, rising to greet, reverential gestures, polite services, bringing of seats, bringing of beds, water for feet, footstools, foot-towels, receiving of bowls and robes, and back-rubbing during bathing!” Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on this occasion, on this matter, had the assembly of bhikkhus convened and questioned the bhikkhus: “Is it true, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus on probation accept from ordinary bhikkhus salutations, rising to greet, reverential gestures, polite services, bringing of seats, bringing of beds, water for feet, footstools, foot-towels, receiving of bowls and robes, and back-rubbing during bathing?” “It is true, Blessed One.” The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: “This is not suitable…pe… How can bhikkhus, bhikkhus on probation accept from ordinary bhikkhus salutations, rising to greet, reverential gestures, polite services, bringing of seats, bringing of beds, water for feet, footstools, foot-towels, receiving of bowls and robes, and back-rubbing during bathing? This, bhikkhus, is not for the conviction of the unconvinced…pe… Having rebuked them…pe… having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu on probation should not accept from ordinary bhikkhus To greet, to rise up, to make añjali, to make sāmīci, to offer a seat, to offer a bed, foot water, a footstool, a foot towel, to receive a bowl and robe, to rub the back when bathing. Whoever accepts these, there is an offense of dukkata. I allow, monks, for monks on probation, to greet each other according to seniority, to rise up, to make añjali, to make sāmīci, to offer a seat, to offer a bed, foot water, a footstool, a foot towel, to receive a bowl and robe, to rub the back when bathing. I allow, monks, for monks on probation, five things according to seniority: Uposatha, Pavāraṇā, the rain-bathing cloth, invitation (for food), food. Therefore, monks, I will lay down the duties for monks on probation, how monks on probation should conduct themselves. 76. A monk on probation, monks, should conduct himself properly. And this is the proper conduct: He should not give ordination, he should not give dependence, he should not attend to a novice, he should not accept the appointment of an instructress of nuns, even if appointed, he should not instruct nuns. The offense for which he was given probation by the Sangha, that offense should not be committed, nor any other similar one, nor one worse than that; the act should not be disparaged, those who performed the act should not be disparaged. He should not set aside the Uposatha of a fully qualified monk, he should not set aside the Pavāraṇā, he should not make a verbal dispute, he should not initiate a reproof, he should not make an opportunity (for dispute), he should not be admonished, he should not be reminded, he should not associate with monks. A monk on probation, monks, should not walk in front of a fully qualified monk, should not sit in front. Whatever is the boundary of the Sangha's seats, the boundary of beds, the boundary of dwellings, that should be given to him. And he should accept it. A monk on probation, monks, should not visit families with a fully qualified monk, either walking in front or walking behind. Things not to be undertaken: The forest-dweller's practice should not be undertaken, The alms-gatherer's practice should not be undertaken, And on that account, alms should not be caused to be brought out – Lest they should know me. A monk on probation, O bhikkhus, should announce to an arriving monk, should announce to an arriving monk, should announce on Uposatha day, should announce on Pavāraṇā day.
