a dwelling or non-dwelling with monks should be gone to, where there are monks of the same communion, which he knows he can go to today. Monks, by a monk liable to be sent back to the beginning, from a dwelling or non-dwelling with monks, a dwelling with monks should be gone to, a non-dwelling with monks should be gone to, a dwelling or non-dwelling with monks should be gone to, where there are monks of the same communion, which he knows he can go to today. Not, monks, by a monk liable to be sent back to the beginning, together with an ordinary monk, should dwell in a dwelling under one roof, should not dwell in a non-dwelling under one roof, not one He should dwell in a covered dwelling, or an uncovered one. Seeing a normal bhikkhu, he should rise from his seat. A normal bhikkhu should be invited to a seat. He should not sit on the same seat with a normal bhikkhu. He should not sit on a high seat when one is sitting on a low seat. He should not sit on a seat when one is sitting on the ground. He should not walk on the same walking path. He should not walk on a high walking path when one is walking on a low walking path. He should not walk on a walking path when one is walking on the ground. Monks, a bhikkhu liable to be sent back to the beginning should not dwell in the same covered dwelling with a bhikkhu undergoing probation, ...and so forth... with a bhikkhu liable to be reinstated. He should not dwell in the same uncovered dwelling. He should not dwell in the same covered dwelling or uncovered dwelling. He should not sit on the same seat. He should not sit on a high seat when one is sitting on a low seat. He should not sit on a seat when one is sitting on the ground. He should not walk on the same walking path. He should not walk on a high walking path when one is walking on a low walking path. He should not walk on a walking path when one is walking on the ground. Monks, if a fourth bhikkhu liable to be sent back to the beginning were to give probation, were to send back to the beginning, were to give penance, were to reinstate him, it is not an act, and should not be done. The observance for one liable to be sent back to the beginning is finished. 3. The observance for one liable to undergo penance 88. Now at that time, bhikkhus liable to undergo penance were accepting from normal bhikkhus salutations, rising to greet, the gesture of clasped hands, proper courtesies, bringing seats, bringing beds, foot water, foot stools, foot towels, receiving bowls and robes, and back-rubbing at bathing. Those bhikkhus who were of few desires, ...and so forth... they complained, grumbled, and criticized – "How can bhikkhus liable to undergo penance accept... salutation, rising up, the cupping of hands, respectful greetings, offering a seat, offering a couch, water for feet, a footstool, a foot-wiping cloth, receiving bowl and robe, attending to the back during bathing from monks under penance! Then those monks reported this matter to the Blessed One... "Is it true, monks, that monks undergoing penance accept from ordinary monks salutation, rising up... attending to the back during bathing?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "It is not fitting... How can it be, monks, that monks undergoing penance accept from ordinary monks salutation... attending to the back during bathing! This, monks, is not for the conviction of the unconvinced... Having rebuked them... having given a discourse on the Dhamma, he addressed the monks: "Monks, by a monk undergoing penance should not be accepted from ordinary monks salutation, rising up... attending to the back during bathing. Whoever accepts it, commits an offense of wrong-doing. I allow, monks, for monks undergoing penance among themselves according to seniority salutation, rising up... attending to the back during bathing. I allow, monks, for monks undergoing penance five things according to seniority: Uposatha, Pavāraṇā, rain-bathing cloth, invitation, food. Therefore, monks, I shall lay down the duties for monks undergoing penance, how monks undergoing penance should conduct themselves. 89. "Monks, by a monk undergoing penance, proper conduct should be observed. And this is the proper conduct: He should not give ordination... (as in the case of the original demotion, so should it be elaborated.) He should not associate with monks. "Monks, by a monk undergoing penance, before an ordinary monk he should not go, he should not sit. Whatever is for the Sangha the last seat, the last couch, the last dwelling, that should be given to him. And by him He should be accepted. “Not, bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu undergoing mānatta, should families be approached with a normal bhikkhu, whether as a prior companion or a later companion. Nor should the forest-dweller’s practice be undertaken. Nor should the alms-gatherer’s practice be undertaken. Nor should almsfood be caused to be brought out on that account, thinking: ‘Lest they should know me.’ “Not, bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu undergoing mānatta, from a dwelling with bhikkhus, should a dwelling without bhikkhus be gone to, except with a normal bhikkhu, except in case of danger. “Not, bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu undergoing mānatta, from a dwelling with bhikkhus, should a non-dwelling without bhikkhus be gone to, except with a normal bhikkhu, except in case of danger. “Not, bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu undergoing mānatta, from a dwelling with bhikkhus, should a dwelling or a non-dwelling without bhikkhus be gone to, except with a normal bhikkhu, except in case of danger. “Not, bhikkhus, by a bhikkhu undergoing mānatta, from a non-dwelling with bhikkhus, should a dwelling without bhikkhus be gone to, except with a normal bhikkhu, except in case of danger. Having seen a normal monk, one should rise from one's seat. A normal monk should be offered a seat. Not with a normal monk on the same seat should one sit. Not, while he sits on a low seat, should one sit on a high seat. Not, while he sits on the ground, should one sit on a seat. Not on the same walking path should one walk.
