who did not know, who was sick, for snacks, for fruits, for extra portions, in times of danger, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The ninth training rule is finished. 616. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six monks were making long mouthfuls...etc.... "I will make a rounded mouthful" — thus a training should be undertaken. A rounded mouthful should be made. Whoever, out of disrespect, makes a long mouthful, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend, who was unmindful, who did not know, who was sick, for snacks, for fruits, for extra portions, in times of danger, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The tenth training rule is finished. The Chapter on Careful Eating is the fourth. 5. The Chapter on Mouthfuls 617. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six monks were opening their mouth-door when the mouthful had not been brought [to the mouth]...etc.... "I will not open my mouth-door when the mouthful has not been brought [to the mouth]" — thus a training should be undertaken. The mouth-door should not be opened when the mouthful has not been brought [to the mouth]. Whoever, out of disrespect, opens their mouth-door when the mouthful has not been brought [to the mouth], incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend...etc.... for the first offender. The first training rule is finished. 618. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six monks, while eating, were putting their whole hand into their mouth...etc.... "While eating, I will not put my whole hand into my mouth" — thus a training should be undertaken. While eating, the whole hand should not be put into the mouth. Whoever, out of disrespect, When eating, one puts the whole hand into the mouth: an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional… …or for the first offender. The second training rule is finished. 619. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus spoke with their mouths full… “I will not speak with my mouth full”— this is a training to be observed. One should not speak with one’s mouth full. Whoever, out of disrespect, speaks with their mouth full, an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional… …or for the first offender. The third training rule is finished. 620. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus ate by tossing mouthfuls of food… “I will not eat by tossing mouthfuls of food”— this is a training to be observed. One should not eat by tossing mouthfuls of food. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats by tossing mouthfuls of food, an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional, if unmindful, if not knowing, if sick, for snacks, for fruits, in times of danger, if insane, or for the first offender. The fourth training rule is finished. 621. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus ate by cutting off mouthfuls of food… “I will not eat by cutting off mouthfuls of food”— this is a training to be observed. One should not eat by cutting off mouthfuls of food. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats by cutting off mouthfuls of food, an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional, if unmindful, if not knowing, if sick, for snacks, for fruits, for extra portions, in times of danger, if insane, or for the first offender. The fifth training rule is finished. 622. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time At that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus ate with bulging cheeks... "I will not eat with bulging cheeks" — a training rule to be observed. One should not eat with bulging cheeks. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats with a cheek or both cheeks bulging, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend, who was unmindful, who did not know, who was sick, when eating fruits, in times of danger, who was insane, or who was the first wrong-doer. The sixth training rule is finished. 623. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Savatthi, at Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. At that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus ate shaking their hands... "I will not eat shaking my hands" — a training rule to be observed. One should not eat shaking one's hands. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats shaking their hands, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend, who was unmindful, who did not know, who was sick, who shakes their hand while discarding refuse, in times of danger, who was insane, or who was the first wrong-doer. The seventh training rule is finished. 624. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Savatthi, at Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. At that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus ate scattering grains of rice... "I will not eat scattering grains of rice" — a training rule to be observed. One should not eat scattering grains of rice. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats scattering grains of rice, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend, who was unmindful, who did not know, who was sick, who discards grains of rice while discarding refuse, in times of danger, who was insane, or who was the first wrong-doer. The eighth training rule is finished. 625. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Savatthi, at Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery. At that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus ate sticking out their tongues... "I will not eat sticking out my tongue" — a training rule to be observed. One should not eat sticking out one's tongue. should be eaten. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats with the tongue sticking out, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if not intentionally… …for the first offender. The ninth training rule is finished. 626. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. At that time, the group of six monks ate making a 'capu capu' sound… "I will not eat making a 'capu capu' sound" – this is a training to be observed. One should not eat making a 'capu capu' sound. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats making a 'capu capu' sound, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if not intentionally… …for the first offender. The tenth training rule is finished. The chapter on mouthfuls, the fifth. 6. The chapter on slurping 627. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Kosambī, in Ghosita's monastery. At that time, milk was prepared for the Saṅgha by a certain brahmin. The monks drank the milk making a 'suru suru' sound. A certain monk, formerly an actor, said this: "I suppose the whole Saṅgha has become cold." Those monks who were of few desires… they complained, grumbled, and criticized: "How can this monk make fun of the Saṅgha?"… "Is it true, monk, that you made fun of the Saṅgha?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him… "How can you, foolish man, make fun of the Saṅgha! This, foolish man, is not for the conversion of the unconverted… Having rebuked him… having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the monks: "Monks, no fun should be made of the Buddha, Dhamma, or Saṅgha. Whoever does so, commits an offense of wrong-doing." Then the Blessed One, having rebuked that monk in many ways for his difficult-to-support nature… "And thus, monks, you should recite this training rule: "I will not eat making a 'suru suru' sound" – this is a training to be observed. One should not eat making a 'suru suru' sound. Whoever, out of disrespect, and eats making a slurping sound, there is an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional...etc.... or for the first offender. The first training rule is finished. 628. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus were eating licking their hands...etc.... "I will not eat licking my hands" – this is a training to be observed. One should not eat licking one's hands. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats licking his hands, there is an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional...etc.... or for the first offender. The second training rule is finished. 629. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus were eating licking their bowls...etc.... "I will not eat licking my bowl" – this is a training to be observed. One should not eat licking one's bowl. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats licking his bowl, there is an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional, unmindful, not knowing, sick, if one gathers the small remaining bits together and licks and eats, in times of danger, insane, or for the first offender. The third training rule is finished. 630. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus were eating licking their lips...etc.... "I will not eat licking my lips" – this is a training to be observed. One should not eat licking one's lips. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats licking his lips, there is an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional...etc.... or for the first offender.
