At that time, the group of six bhikkhus taught the Dhamma to one lying down…and so on…. “I will not teach the Dhamma to one lying down, unless he is sick”— this is a training rule to be observed. The Dhamma should not be taught to one lying down, unless he is sick. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma to one lying down, even on the ground, unless he is sick, commits an offense of dukkaṭa. There is no offense if it is unintentional…and so on… for the first offender. The fourth training rule is concluded. 642. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time, the group of six bhikkhus taught the Dhamma to one sitting with knees drawn up…and so on…. “I will not teach the Dhamma to one sitting with knees drawn up, unless he is sick— —this training rule is to be observed. Dhamma should not be taught to one sitting with hands on knees, not ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches Dhamma to one sitting with hands on knees or with cloth on knees, not ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional… (etc.)… or if it's the first offender. The fifth training rule is concluded. 643. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six bhikkhus taught Dhamma to one with a wrapped head… (etc.)…. "I will not teach Dhamma to one with a wrapped head, not ill"— this training rule is to be observed. One with a wrapped head means one whose hair-ends are not shown, being wrapped. Dhamma should not be taught to one with a wrapped head, not ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches Dhamma to one with a wrapped head, not ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional, unmindful, unknowing, if the person is ill, if one teaches after having the hair-ends uncovered, in emergencies, if insane, or if it's the first offender. The sixth training rule is concluded. 644. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six bhikkhus taught Dhamma to one with a covered head… (etc.)…. "I will not teach Dhamma to one with a covered head, not ill"— this training rule is to be observed. One with a covered head means one who is covered including the head. Dhamma should not be taught to one with a covered head, not ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches Dhamma to one with a covered head, not ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense if unintentional, unmindful, unknowing, if the person is ill, if one teaches after having the head uncovered, in emergencies, if insane, or if it's the first offender. The seventh training rule is concluded. 645. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And at that time, the group of six bhikkhus, sitting on the ground, taught Dhamma to one sitting on a seat teach Dhamma to a non-sick person... "Sitting on the ground, I will not teach Dhamma to one sitting on a seat, who is not sick." "This training rule is to be observed." One should not teach Dhamma, sitting on the ground, to one sitting on a seat, who is not sick. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches Dhamma, sitting on the ground, to one sitting on a seat, who is not sick, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional... or for the first offender. The eighth training rule is finished. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time, the group of six monks were teaching Dhamma, sitting on a low seat, to one sitting on a high seat. Those monks who were of few wishes... they complained, grumbled, and criticized: "How can the group of six monks teach Dhamma, sitting on a low seat, to one sitting on a high seat?"... "Is it true, monks, that you teach Dhamma, sitting on a low seat, to one sitting on a high seat?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them... "How can you, foolish men, teach Dhamma, sitting on a low seat, to one sitting on a high seat!" "This, foolish men, is not for the conversion of the unconverted..." Having rebuked them... and given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the monks: "Once upon a time, monks, in Bārāṇasī, the wife of a certain outcast was pregnant. Then, monks, that outcast woman said to that outcast man: 'I am pregnant, my dear! I want to eat a mango.'" "'There is no mango, it is not the season for mangoes.'" "'If I don't get one, I will die.'" Now at that time, the king's mango tree bore fruit constantly. Then, monks, that outcast man approached that mango tree; having approached it, he climbed that mango tree and hid himself. Then, monks, the king, with his chaplain... with the brahmin he approached the mango tree; having approached, he sat on a high seat and learned the mantra. Then, monks, it occurred to that chapaka: ‘How unrighteous this king is, in that he sits on a high seat and learns the mantra. And this brahmin is unrighteous, in that he sits on a low seat and recites the mantra to one seated on a high seat. And I am unrighteous, who for the sake of a woman steals the king’s mango. All this is done for the last time.’ And right there he fell down. [These verses appear differently in Jātaka 1.4.33-35] Both do not know the meaning, both do not see the Dhamma; He who recites the mantra, and he who learns unrighteously. Rice with boiled rice eaten, with pure meat sauce; Therefore I do not act in Dhamma, Dhamma praised by the noble ones. Fie on that gain of wealth, and gain of fame, brahmin; That livelihood by ruin, or by unrighteous conduct. Wander forth, great brahmin, even cooking for others; Do not act unrighteously, as if breaking this pot. Even then, monks, it was displeasing to me to recite the mantra while seated on a low seat to one seated on a high seat; how much more so now will it not be displeasing to teach the Dhamma while seated on a low seat to one seated on a high seat. This, monks, is not for the conversion of the unconverted… And thus, monks, you should recite this training rule: ‘I will not teach Dhamma while seated on a low seat to one seated on a high seat, unless sick’— this training should be undertaken. Dhamma should not be taught while seated on a low seat to one seated on a high seat, unless sick. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches Dhamma while seated on a low seat to one seated on a high seat, unless sick, commits an offense of dukkaṭa. There is no offense if unintentional… …or for the first offender. The ninth training rule is finished. 648. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Sāvatthī. He dwells in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus, standing, taught the Dhamma to one who was sitting... "I will not teach the Dhamma, standing, to one who is sitting, unless he is ill" — this training rule is to be undertaken. The Dhamma should not be taught, standing, to one who is sitting, unless he is ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma, standing, to one who is sitting, unless he is ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional... or for the first offender. The tenth training rule is concluded. 649. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus, walking behind, taught the Dhamma to one walking in front... "I will not teach the Dhamma, walking behind, to one walking in front, unless he is ill" — this training rule is to be undertaken. The Dhamma should not be taught, walking behind, to one walking in front, unless he is ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma, walking behind, to one walking in front, unless he is ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional... or for the first offender. The eleventh training rule is concluded. 650. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus, walking off the path, taught the Dhamma to one walking on the path... "I will not teach the Dhamma, walking off the path, to one walking on the path, unless he is ill" — this training rule is to be undertaken. The Dhamma should not be taught, walking off the path, to one walking on the path, unless he is ill. Whoever, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma, walking off the path, to one walking on the path, unless he is ill, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional... or for the first offender. The twelfth training rule is concluded. 651. At that time, the group-of-six bhikkhus, standing, urinated and defecated... "I will not, while standing and not sick, urinate or defecate"— this training rule is to be observed. One who is not sick should not urinate or defecate while standing. Whoever, out of disrespect, while standing and not sick, urinates or defecates, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend... for the first offender. The thirteenth training rule is finished. 652. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery.
