No offense for one who is not intentional, not mindful, not knowing, who is sick, in times of danger, who is insane, who is the first wrong-doer. The third training rule is concluded. 589. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus were sitting inside the dwelling, making a loud noise, a great noise...etc. "I will sit inside the dwelling quietly" — this is a training to be observed. One should sit inside the dwelling quietly. Whoever, out of disrespect, sits inside the dwelling making a loud noise, a great noise, , an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional…etc… or for the first wrong-doer. The fourth training rule is finished. 590. At one time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time, the group of six bhikkhus were walking swaying their bodies in inhabited areas, letting their bodies hang loose…etc…. “I will not walk swaying my body in inhabited areas”—this is a training to be observed. One should not walk swaying one’s body in inhabited areas. One should walk holding one’s body upright. If, out of disrespect, one walks swaying one’s body in inhabited areas, letting one’s body hang loose, there is an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional…etc… or for the first wrong-doer. The fifth training rule is finished. 591. At one time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time, the group of six bhikkhus were sitting swaying their bodies in inhabited areas, letting their bodies hang loose…etc…. “I will not sit swaying my body in inhabited areas”—this is a training to be observed. One should not sit swaying one’s body in inhabited areas. One should sit holding one’s body upright. If, out of disrespect, one sits swaying one’s body in inhabited areas, letting one’s body hang loose, there is an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional, unmindful, not knowing, sick, staying in a dwelling, in times of danger, insane, or for the first wrong-doer. The sixth training rule is finished. 592. At one time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. At that time, the group of six bhikkhus were walking swaying their arms in inhabited areas, letting their arms hang loose…etc…. “I will not walk swaying my arms in inhabited areas”—this is a training to be observed. One should not walk swaying one’s arms in inhabited areas. One should walk holding one’s arms still. If, out of disrespect, one walks swaying one’s arms in inhabited areas, letting one’s arms hang loose, there is an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if unintentional…etc… for the first offender. The seventh training rule is finished. 593. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the group of six monks sat in houses with their arms swinging, letting their arms hang down... "I will not sit in houses with my arms swinging"— this is a training rule to be observed. One should not sit in houses with arms swinging. One should sit with arms held up. Whoever, out of disrespect, sits in houses with arms swinging, letting his arms hang down, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend it, who was not mindful, who did not know, who was sick, who was staying overnight, in times of danger, who was insane, for the first offender. The eighth training rule is finished. 594. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the group of six monks walked in houses with their heads swinging, letting their heads hang down... "I will not walk in houses with my head swinging"— this is a training rule to be observed. One should not walk in houses with head swinging. One should walk with head held up. Whoever, out of disrespect, walks in houses with head swinging, letting his head hang down, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend it... for the first offender. The ninth training rule is finished. 595. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the group of six monks sat in houses with their heads swinging, letting their heads hang down... "I will not sit in houses with my head swinging"— this is a training rule to be observed. One should not sit in houses with head swinging. One should sit with head held up. Whoever, out of disrespect, sits in houses with head swinging, letting his head hang down, commits an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense for one who did not intend it, who was not mindful, who did not know, who was sick, who was staying overnight for one who has gone, in dangers, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The tenth training rule is finished. The second chapter on excessive laughter. 3. The chapter on walking with arms akimbo 596. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time the group of six monks, with arms akimbo, were walking inside the houses... "I will not walk inside the houses with arms akimbo" — this training rule should be undertaken. One should not walk inside the houses with arms akimbo. Whoever, out of disrespect, making an arm akimbo either on one side or on both sides, walks inside the houses, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend... for the first offender. The first training rule is finished. 597. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time the group of six monks, with arms akimbo, were sitting inside the houses... "I will not sit inside the houses with arms akimbo" — this training rule should be undertaken. One should not sit inside the houses with arms akimbo. Whoever, out of disrespect, making an arm akimbo either on one side or on both sides, sits inside the houses, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend, for one who is unmindful, for one who does not know, for one who is sick, for one who has just arrived, in dangers, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The second training rule is finished. 598. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. And at that time the group of six monks, having covered their heads, were walking inside the houses... "I will not walk inside the houses with my head covered" — this training rule should be undertaken. One should not walk inside the houses with the head covered. Whoever, out of disrespect, having covered their head, walks inside the houses, incurs an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend... for the first offender. The third training rule is finished. 599. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus covering their heads sat down inside the houses... "Not covered will I sit inside the houses," this training rule is to be observed. Not covered should one sit inside the houses. Whoever, out of disrespect, covering his head, sits inside the houses, commits an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend, for one who was unmindful, for one who did not know, for one who is sick, for one who has just arrived, in times of danger, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The fourth training rule is concluded. 600. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus squatting went inside the houses... "Not squatting will I go inside the houses," this training rule is to be observed. Not squatting should one go inside the houses. Whoever, out of disrespect, squatting, goes inside the houses, commits an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend... for the first offender. The fifth training rule is concluded. 601. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus sitting with knees up sat inside the houses... "Not sitting with knees up will I sit inside the houses," this training rule is to be observed. Not sitting with knees up should one sit inside the houses. Whoever, out of disrespect, either with hands folded over knees or with cloth folded over knees, sits inside the houses, commits an offense of wrong-doing. No offense for one who did not intend, for one who was unmindful, for one who did not know, for one who is sick, for one who has just arrived, in times of danger, for one who is insane, for the first offender. The sixth training rule is concluded. 602. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. At that time the group of six bhikkhus disrespectfully received almsfood as if wanting to throw it away... "Respectfully almsfood "I will receive alms with attention" — this training should be undertaken. Almsfood should be received carefully. Whoever, out of disrespect, receives almsfood carelessly, as if intending to throw it away, there is an offense of wrong-doing. There is no offense if not intending… …for the first offender. The seventh training rule is finished. 603. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery.
