malice, or weakness, say this: 'Indeed, sisters, you dwell in company, of evil conduct, evil repute, evil fame, vexatious to the bhikkhuni Sangha, concealing each other's faults. Separate yourselves, ladies. The Sangha praises only seclusion for the sisters.'" She does not retract that matter. If it is agreeable to the Sangha, the Sangha should admonish this bhikkhuni of such-and-such a name for the retraction of that matter. This is the motion. 'May the Sangha, ladies, hear me. This bhikkhuni of such-and-such a name, admonished by the Sangha, speaks thus to the bhikkhunis: "Ladies, you should dwell in company. dwell together. Do not dwell separately. There are other nuns in the Saṅgha who are of such conduct, of such speech, of such reputation, who are troublesome to the community of nuns, who conceal each other's faults. The Saṅgha says nothing to them. Only to you does the Saṅgha, out of contempt, disrespect, impatience, disapproval, and weakness, say this: 'Indeed, sisters, you dwell intermingled, of evil conduct, of evil speech, of evil reputation, troublesome to the community of nuns, concealing each other's faults. Separate, ladies. The Saṅgha praises only separation for the sisters.' She does not relinquish that matter. The Saṅgha admonishes that nun by name for the relinquishing of that matter. If it is agreeable to the venerable one that the nun by name be admonished for the relinquishing of that matter, she should remain silent; if it is not agreeable, she should speak. A second time I state this matter... A third time I state this matter.... The nun by name has been admonished by the Saṅgha for the relinquishing of that matter. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha, therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold this. For the motion, an offense of wrong-doing; for two proclamations, an offense of grave fault; at the conclusion of the proclamation, an offense of Saṅghādisesa. When committing a Saṅghādisesa, for the motion, an offense of wrong-doing; for two proclamations, offenses of grave fault cease. "This also" is said by referring to the former ones. "Up to the third time" means she incurs an offense up to the third admonition, not by the mere act of dwelling together. "To be expelled" means she is expelled from the Saṅgha. "Saṅghādisesa" means the Saṅgha alone gives her penance, reinstates her to the beginning, rehabilitates her, not many nuns, not one nun. Therefore it is called "Saṅghādisesa." It is the naming and designation of that class of offenses. Therefore it is also called "Saṅghādisesa." 731. If, in a lawful act, she perceives it as a lawful act and does not relinquish it, there is an offense of Saṅghādisesa. If, in a lawful act, she is in doubt and does not relinquish it, there is an offense. of a Saṅghādisesa. If, in a Dhamma-proceeding, she perceives it as an Adhamma-proceeding, and does not retract, there is an offense of Saṅghādisesa. If, in an Adhamma-proceeding, she perceives it as a Dhamma-proceeding, there is an offense of Dukkata. If, in an Adhamma-proceeding, she is in doubt, there is an offense of Dukkata. If, in an Adhamma-proceeding, she perceives it as an Adhamma-proceeding, there is an offense of Dukkata. 732. There is no offense for one who does not admonish, for one who retracts, for one who is insane, for one who is the first offender. The tenth Saṅghādisesa training rule is concluded. Sisters, seventeen Saṅghādisesa rules have been recited— nine of immediate offense, eight of up to the third admonition. If a bhikkhunī commits any one of these, that bhikkhunī must undergo the mānatta discipline in both Saṅghas. Having completed the mānatta, that bhikkhunī should be reinstated where there is a bhikkhunī Saṅgha of twenty. If a bhikkhunī Saṅgha of less than twenty were to reinstate that bhikkhunī, that bhikkhunī is not properly reinstated, and those bhikkhunīs are blameworthy. This is the proper procedure here. Sisters, I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" A second time I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" A third time I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" Sisters, you are pure in this, therefore you are silent. Thus do I hold it. The section of seventeen is concluded. The Saṅghādisesa section in the Bhikkhunivibhaṅga is concluded.
