The tenth Saṅghādisesa training rule 727. At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time, the nun Thullanandā, having been admonished by the community of nuns, spoke to the nuns thus: "Sisters, you should live in association. Do not live separately. There are other nuns in the community who are of such conduct, such reputation, such fame, who are harmful to the community of nuns, who conceal each other's faults. The community says nothing to them. But the community speaks to you alone, out of contempt, disdain, intolerance, harshness, and weakness, saying: 'Indeed, sisters, you live in association, of evil conduct, evil reputation, evil fame, harmful to the community of nuns, concealing each other's faults. Separate, sisters. The community praises only separation for sisters.'" Those nuns who were of few wishes, etc., they complained, murmured, and criticized: "How can the venerable nun Thullanandā, having been admonished by the community, speak to the nuns thus: 'Sisters, you should live in association. Do not live separately. There are other nuns in the community... etc. Separate, sisters. The community praises only separation for sisters'?" …(thus it was said)… Is it true, monks, that the nun Thullanandā, being admonished by the Sangha, said to the nuns: “Sisters, you should live in association. Do not live separately. There are other nuns in the Sangha who are of such conduct, of such reputation, of such renown, who are a nuisance to the community of nuns, who conceal each other’s faults. The Sangha says nothing to them. Only to you does the Sangha say, out of contempt, disrespect, impatience, malice, and weakness: ‘Sisters, you live in association, of evil conduct, of evil reputation, of evil renown, a nuisance to the community of nuns, concealing each other’s faults. Sisters, live separately. The Sangha praises only separation for the sisters’”? “It is true, Blessed One.” The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her… …(thus it was said)… How can it be, monks, that the nun Thullanandā, being admonished by the Sangha, says to the nuns: “Sisters, you should live in association. Do not live separately. There are other nuns in the Sangha… …(thus it was said)… Sisters, live separately. The Sangha praises only separation for the sisters’”? This, monks, is not for the conversion of the unconverted… …(thus it was said)… And thus, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule: 728. “Should any nun say this: ‘Sisters, you should live in association. Do not live separately. There are other nuns in the Sangha who are of such conduct, of such reputation, of such renown, who are a nuisance to the community of nuns, who conceal each other’s faults. The Sangha says nothing to them. Only to you does the Sangha say, out of contempt, disrespect, impatience, malice, and weakness: “Sisters, you live in association, of evil conduct, of evil reputation, of evil renown, a nuisance to the community of nuns, concealing each other’s faults. Sisters, live separately. The Sangha praises only separation for the sisters”’— that nun should be told by the nuns: ‘Sister, do not speak thus: “Sisters, you should live in association. Do not You should dwell separately. There are other bhikkhunis in the Sangha, of such conduct, of such repute, of such fame, harmful to the bhikkhuni Sangha, concealing each other's faults. The Sangha says nothing to them. Separate yourselves, ladies. The Sangha praises only separation for the sisters." And if that bhikkhuni, being spoken to by the bhikkhunis, should still cling to it, that bhikkhuni should be admonished by the bhikkhunis up to three times for the relinquishing of that. If, being admonished up to three times, she relinquishes it, that is good; if she does not relinquish it, this bhikkhuni also has fallen into a third offence, a Sanghādisesa leading to expulsion. 729. "Yāpanā" means whatever kind... "...bhikkhuni" means... this bhikkhuni is intended in this context. She might say thus: "Indeed, ladies, you dwell mixed up. Do not dwell separately. There are other bhikkhunis in the Sangha, of such conduct, of such repute, of such fame, harmful to the bhikkhuni Sangha, concealing each other's faults. The Sangha says nothing to them." There are other bhikkhunis in the Sangha... ...separate yourselves, ladies. The Sangha praises only seclusion for the sisters.' She should be told a second time. She should be told a third time. If she retracts, that is good; if she does not retract, there is an offense of wrong-doing. If they hear and do not speak, there is an offense of wrong-doing. That bhikkhuni should be dragged into the midst of the Sangha and told: 'Lady, do not speak thus: "Ladies, you should dwell in company. Do not dwell separately. There are other bhikkhunis in the Sangha... ...separate yourselves, ladies. The Sangha praises only seclusion for the sisters."' She should be told a second time. She should be told a third time. If she retracts, that is good; if she does not retract, there is an offense of wrong-doing. That bhikkhuni should be admonished. And thus, bhikkhus, should she be admonished. A competent and capable bhikkhuni should inform the Sangha: 'May the Sangha, ladies, hear me. This bhikkhuni of such-and-such a name, admonished by the Sangha, speaks thus to the bhikkhunis: "Ladies, you should dwell in company. Do not dwell separately. There are other bhikkhunis in the Sangha of such conduct, such repute, such fame, who are vexatious to the bhikkhuni Sangha, who conceal each other's faults. The Sangha says nothing to them.
