The third jhana and the second jhana have been realized by me— for one speaking a deliberate lie thus, the offense of defeat. By three aspects, and my mind is free from the hindrance of delusion, and the first jhana… …and the second jhana… …and the third jhana… …and the fourth jhana I attained, I attained… I enter... I am entered... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I am a recipient of the fourth jhāna... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. The fourth jhāna has been realized by me. For one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. 212. In three ways, my mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I entered the void liberation... the signless liberation... the desireless liberation... I enter... I am entered... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I am a recipient of the desireless liberation... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. The desireless liberation has been realized by me. For one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways, my mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I entered the void concentration... the signless concentration... the desireless concentration... I enter... I am entered... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I am a recipient of the desireless concentration... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. The desireless concentration has been realized by me. For one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways, my mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I entered the void attainment... the signless attainment... the desireless attainment... I entered... I enter... I am entered... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. I am a recipient of the desireless attainment... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion and hindrances. The desireless attainment has been realized by me. For one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. That is an offense of expulsion for one who declares it. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and I attained the three knowledges..." "...I attain them..." "...I am one who has attained them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, I am a recipient of the three knowledges..." "...I am a master of them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and the three knowledges have been realized by me." For one who speaks a deliberate lie thus, it is an offense of expulsion. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and I attained the four foundations of mindfulness..." "...the four right exertions..." "...the four bases of psychic power..." "...I attain them..." "...I am one who has attained them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, I am a recipient of the four bases of psychic power..." "...I am a master of them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and the four bases of psychic power have been realized by me." For one who speaks a deliberate lie thus, it is an offense of expulsion. 213. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and I attained the five faculties..." "...the five powers..." "...I attain them..." "...I am one who has attained them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, I am a recipient of the five powers..." "...I am a master of them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and the five powers have been realized by me." For one who speaks a deliberate lie thus, it is an offense of expulsion. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and I attained the seven factors of awakening..." "...I attain them..." "...I am one who has attained them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, I am a recipient of the seven factors of awakening..." "...I am a master of them..." "My mind is free from delusion and unhindered, and the seven factors of awakening have been realized by me." For one who speaks a deliberate lie thus, it is an offense of expulsion. For one who claims, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion, and I attained the Noble Eightfold Path... I am attaining... I have attained... My mind is free from delusion, and I am a recipient of the Noble Eightfold Path... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion, and the Noble Eightfold Path has been realized by me" — for one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion, and I attained the fruit of stream-entry... and the fruit of once-returning... and the fruit of non-returning... and arahantship... I am attaining... I have attained... My mind is free from delusion, and I am a recipient of arahantship... I am a master... My mind is free from delusion, and arahantship has been realized by me" — for one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways: "My mind is free from delusion, and my lust is abandoned... and my hatred is abandoned... and my delusion is abandoned, vomited forth, released, given up, relinquished, uprooted, completely uprooted" — for one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. In three ways... and so on... in seven ways: "My mind is free from delusion, and my mind is free from lust... and my mind is free from hatred" — for one who speaks a deliberate lie, there is an offense of defeat. Beforehand, it occurs to him: "I will speak a lie." While speaking, it occurs to him: "I am speaking a lie." After speaking, it occurs to him: "A lie has been spoken by me." Having set aside his view, having set aside his acceptance, having set aside his preference, having set aside his conviction. Thus. The One-Root is finished. Just as the One-Root was expounded, even so the Two-Roots and so on should be expounded. This is the All-Roots. By three modes... by seven modes, the first jhāna, the second jhāna, the third jhāna, the fourth jhāna, the liberation of emptiness, the liberation of signlessness, the liberation of desirelessness, the concentration of emptiness, the concentration of signlessness, the concentration of desirelessness, the attainment of emptiness, the attainment of signlessness, the attainment of desirelessness, and the three knowledges, and the four foundations of mindfulness, and the four right exertions, and the four bases of psychic power, and the five faculties, and the five powers, and the seven factors of awakening, and the Noble Eightfold Path, and the fruit of stream-entry, and the fruit of once-returning, and the fruit of non-returning, and arahantship— 'I have attained... I attain... I am one who has attained...' 'And my lust is abandoned, and my hatred is abandoned, and my delusion is abandoned, vomited forth, released, relinquished, rejected, uprooted, completely uprooted. And my mind is free from the hindrance of lust, and my mind is free from the hindrance of hatred, and my mind is free from the hindrance of delusion'— for one who knowingly speaks falsely thus, there is an offense of pārājika. Beforehand, it occurs to him: 'I will speak falsely.' While speaking, it occurs to him: 'I am speaking falsely.' After speaking, it occurs to him: 'I have spoken falsely.' setting aside his view, setting aside his acceptance, setting aside his preference, setting aside his state. The All-Roots is finished. Desiring to say, "By three modes, I entered the first jhāna," but saying, "I entered the second jhāna," speaking a deliberate lie, if knowing, it is an offense of defeat; if not knowing, it is an offense of grave fault. Desiring to say, "By three modes, I entered the first jhāna," but saying, "I entered the third jhāna," speaking a deliberate lie, if knowing, it is an offense of defeat; if not knowing, it is an offense of grave fault. Desiring to say, "By three modes, I entered the first jhāna," but saying, "I entered the fourth jhāna," speaking a deliberate lie, if knowing, it is an offense of defeat; if not knowing, it is an offense of grave fault. Desiring to say, "By three modes, I entered the first jhāna," (and so on, up to) "By seven modes, I entered the first jhāna," but saying, "I entered emptiness liberation," "signless liberation," "desireless liberation," "emptiness concentration," "signless concentration," "desireless concentration," "emptiness attainment," "signless attainment," "desireless attainment," "the three knowledges," "the four foundations of mindfulness," "the four right exertions," "the four bases of psychic power," "the five faculties," "the five powers," "the seven factors of awakening," "the noble eightfold path," "the fruit of stream-entry," "the fruit of once-returning," "the fruit of non-returning," "I attained arahantship," (and so on, including) "my lust is abandoned," "my hatred is abandoned," "my delusion is abandoned, vomited, released, abandoned, relinquished, uprooted, thoroughly uprooted." "My mind is free from the hindrance of lust," "my mind is free from the hindrance of hatred," (and so on for delusion), speaking a deliberate lie, if knowing, it is an offense of defeat; if not knowing, it is an offense of grave fault. My mind is free from hindrances... My mind is free from the hindrance of delusion. To one who speaks a deliberate lie, knowing it, there is an offense of defeat. To one not knowing it, there is an offense of grave fault. Before, he thinks, "I will speak a lie." While speaking, he thinks, "I am speaking a lie." After speaking, he thinks, "I have spoken a lie." Having set aside his view, having set aside his approval, having set aside his preference, having set aside his state. Of the extensive case, with one root, the section-cycle is finished. 216.
