He diligently practiced and contemplated that meaning. Then, the garden deity said: Old monk, do not waste the offerings given by the faithful. He also asked the teacher for instructions and meditated single-mindedly, and after three months, he attained the state of an Arhat and spent the summer retreat in the grove of complete assembly at the abode of the Thirty-Three. Later, he returned to Pataliputra, and among the Sangha and a large gathering of people, the clothes given by the king were imbued with the fragrance of the Vata tree, and the entire area was filled with fragrance. There, the other monks asked the reason, and he also told the previous story, and everyone was amazed. Gradually, the story reached the king's ears. The king thought: Even a monk with very dull intellect can attain the state of an Arhat, which is the merit of the Dharma, and this is also because he offered his own clothes. Therefore, seeing the benefit of generosity and altruism, he again held a grand festival for three hundred thousand monks for a period of five years. In the first part of each day, he offered delicious food and fine clothes to the Arhats; in the second part, he offered to the noble learners; and in the third part, he offered to the ordinary Sangha. Then, near the end of that king's life, he vowed to offer one hundred million gold coins to the Sangha in the region under the sun, Kashmir, and Tokharistan. He completely offered to the Sangha in Kashmir and Tokharistan, and offered other items equal to that. Before he could offer four hundred million gold coins and items to the Sangha under the sun, the king himself was afflicted with a serious illness. The king's nephew, named Norlha Jin, who was the manager of the gold treasury, broke the king's word and did not offer the remaining gold coins to the Sangha. At that time, many Arhats came to the king's presence, and the king, with extremely devout mind, offered half a handful of Emblica fruit to quench their thirst to the Sangha. Those Arhats unanimously praised: O King, you previously offered ninety-six billion gold coins when you were completely free, but this offering now is even more meritorious. Then, a maid waved a jeweled-handled fan,

Thereafter, due to the oppression of the daytime heat, he fell asleep, and the fan in the hand of the attendant fell and struck the king's body. The king thought: "Even great kings of the past would wash their feet, etc., and now even such a lowly servant dares to offend me!" Thus, with a mind full of anger, he passed away. Due to the cause of anger, he was reborn as a dragon in a large lake in Pāṭaliputra. At that time, the Arhat Yasa observed: "Where has the king who possessed Dharma been reborn?" He learned that he had been reborn as a dragon in that lake. The Arhat came to the shore of the lake, and due to the imprints of his past life, the dragon was overjoyed and came out of the lake to the presence of the Arhat. When it began to devour birds and animals, the Arhat admonished it, saying: "Great King, be mindful!" and so forth, and taught it the Dharma. The dragon immediately stopped eating, died, and was reborn among the gods of Tuṣita. It is said that the king built temples and many foundations of Dharma in all the lands he ruled, so that the Buddha's teachings spread in all directions. From the time he gained faith in the Buddha's teachings, his previous name was changed, and he was known as Dharma Aśoka, the Righteous King without Sorrow. When he was unable to offer ninety-six billion gold coins to the monks under the sun, a wise minister suggested: "There is a way for this king, which is to dedicate all the kingdom to the Sangha. One hundred billion gold coins are contained within it." He heard this and believed it to be true, so he offered the kingdom to the Sangha. In order to increase the king's merit, the Sangha administered the kingdom for two days. During that time, he offered immeasurable gold and silver to the Sangha, and then took back the kingdom and appointed Aśoka's nephew, Vigataśoka, as king. In the collection of stories made by Vasubandhu, only the arrangement of this historical sequence appears. Related to the Śrāvakayāna Piṭaka are the story of Aśoka, the story of taming Aśoka, the story of Aśoka taming the Nāgas, the story of the Stūpa, the story of the Festival, the story of offering gold, these six, and Kuṇā

Of the seven explanations, the second and seventh were translated into Tibetan. I have also seen Chinese versions of the others. There are also various stories such as offering gold, and the wish-fulfilling vine. This is the sixth part about the history of King Ashoka. At the time when the venerable Dhitika had not yet entrusted the teachings to the venerable Krishna, the venerable Dhitika resided in Kaushambi, a part of the Malava country, for many years, imparting instructions to the fourfold assembly. However, the monks of Vaishali, troubled by persistent illnesses, believed that they could not obtain true teachings, and therefore did not go there. While practicing the ten impermissible things, they proclaimed that this was the Dharma, this was the Vinaya, and this was the teaching of the Teacher. Seven hundred Arhats, including the Arhat Named, refuted them. In the monastery called Kusuma-pura, King Gakye, who came from the Licchavi lineage, acted as the patron, and the Second Council was held. At that time, the seven hundred Arhats were separated by six cities. Only the Arhats belonging to the Vaishali side, and those who were liberated from both sides and were widely learned, participated in the council. Therefore, the Second Council was only a partial council. The actual history of this is found in more detail in the Vinaya-kshudraka, and it is widely known, so it will not be elaborated here. Bhataghati and Sawang Sangpo believed that the council took place at that time. In the Vinaya that exists in Tibet today, it is consistent with the statement that the Second Council was held one hundred and ten years after the Teacher's passing, so this view should be adopted. In the Vinaya of some other schools, there are also statements that the Second Council was held two hundred and ten or two hundred and twenty years after the Teacher's passing. In order to be consistent with this, in some historical documents from India, the venerable Dhitika and others are regarded as contemporaries of Ashoka, and it is believed that the great Lekton also passed away after Ashoka's death, and the Second Council took place after Ashoka's death. These statements also exist, but this is only

From the trivial: Therefore, he entrusted the teachings to Legtong Chenpo, and all the great elephants completely passed into nirvana. At that time, there was a misunderstanding regarding the words "one hundred and ten years after the Buddha's nirvana," etc. In Chinese, the word "Ya Da Zi Da" can refer to both "when" and "at that time" due to its grammatical function, so in this case, it should be translated as "when." The statement about "two hundred and twenty years," etc., is because half a year is counted as one year, so it has the same meaning as the statement of "one hundred and ten years," according to Lama Pandita. The statement blessed by Pandita Wangpo is: Fifty years after the Buddha's nirvana, Nyebe appeared; at one hundred and ten years, the transmission was completed; after that, Ashoka appeared, etc., which does not conform to the prophecy and contradicts the original statements of the Indian mainland. Although it seems good, correct, and appropriate, it is unreliable, or so he seems to be saying. In a place called Anga in the east, there was a very wealthy householder who had a tree in his house that, due to his own karma, bore precious fruits. Because he had no son, he repeatedly worshiped the great deity Vishnu with a black body, and eventually a boy was born, who was named Black. When he grew up, he wanted to enter the great ocean, so he prepared a fine ship and went to the Isle of Gems with five hundred merchants. The ship was well built. In this way, he went to sea six times, and because the time was fast and there were no difficulties, the ship was completed, so the merchant's fame spread in all directions. During this time, his parents also passed away, and at a time when he had gained faith in the noble Dhitika, many merchants came from the distant north and urged him to go to sea. He had not heard that the great ship had been completed seven times, and although he refused, saying, "I cannot go," he eventually went because they insisted on requesting. He also arrived at the Isle of Gems. When the ship was filled with jewels and returned, he saw green groves on the sea island, and the merchants went there with the intention of resting.
