Garab Dorje. This is called The Ten Topics on the Guru's Stages. In Sanskrit: Guru Krama Mahasandhi Upadesha Nama. In Tibetan: This is called The Guru's Stages, the Great Perfection's Key Instructions. Homage to the noble and precious gurus. There are ten topics in the teaching on the guru's stages: the teaching on the qualities of the guru, the teaching on the nature of the guru, the order of how to honor the guru, how to make requests, the teaching on the qualities of generating faith through the blessings that arise from that, the distinctions of the guru, the order of how to please the guru, the faults of viewing the guru wrongly and not pleasing him, the extent of confession for that, and the ten distinctions of teaching with a focus on qualities. Among these, first, there are two aspects to the teaching on the qualities of the guru: the qualities of nature and the qualities of examination. The qualities of nature are: smallness of inherent grasping, smallness of conceptualization, being open to anything, and having relaxation in body and speech. The qualities of examination are: from the great arrangement, being learned and free from activities, having the meaning of reality and reaching the standard, and not being confused about the meaning of desire, these are the qualities of the secret mantra guru. As it is said, having examined correctly, being learned and free from activities has four aspects: being vast and learned in the tantras, being familiar and learned in the methods of secret mantra practice, being realized and learned in the view, and being experienced and learned in experience. First, being vast and learned in the tantras, having studied well the meaning of all the secret mantra tantras from the previous gurus, being able to teach students without confusion, and being able to teach in a way that is not arbitrary or biased. Being familiar and learned in practice, knowing the meaning of the four branches of approach and accomplishment by division. Being realized and learned in the view, generally knowing the meaning of the view in all vehicles, being able to cut off the imputations of others, and especially being learned in the meaning of the direct experience of reality, being liberated from the activity of mental judgment and words. Being experienced and learned in experience

By personally practicing, one can cut off the superimposition of knowledge. Being skilled in experience, one can liberate the continuum of other fortunate ones. "Being free from activities" means that the lama is free from worldly activities, relies on mountains or monasteries, and avoids many retinues and disturbances, which is a sign that the nature of reality is free from activities and relies on the continuum. The nature of reality is meaningful and transcends worldly calculations. "Reaching the standard" means that all the teachings that should be practiced have reached the standard, without a single empty word, so that experience arises. "Not being confused about the meaning of desire" means that the student can teach without being confused about the meaning of the Dharma that he desires, which is a sign of previous practice. Or it is a sign of enjoying a great treasure. In this way, having five characteristics is having the characteristics of a lama. The second general meaning, the nature of the lama, is: the body's behavior is slow and steady, the speech's behavior is honest and straightforward, and the mind's behavior is samadhi without distraction. Having such a nature is called a Vajradhara lama. The third general meaning: the order of how to respect the lama is: when you see the lama, by bowing when you see him, there is a need to manifest the Buddha's realm. By constantly offering mandalas to the lama, you can practice the bodhisattva's path. By constantly bowing with a respectful body, it is equal to the enjoyment of a Chakravartin king. By constantly circumambulating, all beings will be loved and everyone will give good things. By constantly wiping away dust, you will have the vajra eye. By applying fragrant perfume, you will enjoy pure bliss. By offering your body to the lama and being skilled in the lama's activities, you will be able to make all beings your servants. By praising with various languages, with the pleasantness of the sound, you will be reborn in a pure Buddha land. By doing a three-circle purification once to the lama, the activities of this life will be successfully accomplished, and in the future you will be reborn as a thousand-spoke wheel king. If you do it twice, you will abandon sins in this life, and in the future you will become a thousand-earth sovereign king. If you do it three times, you will be praised by everyone in this life.

And it will become a place of offering, and in the future, one will obtain the Siddhi of the Dakinis. If done seven times, it will be accomplished as one thinks, and immediately after dying and transmigrating from here, one will become a Vidyadhara King, turning the fate of beings upwards. If done according to one's age, one will achieve the Vidyadhara who has power over life, and one will abide as long as one remains. Dispelling the afflictive thoughts of sentient beings, subduing beings with various magical powers, and finally, there is no doubt that one will attain Buddhahood in the realm where the contaminated is invisible. Furthermore, by offering a piece of silk to one's own Guru through the sevenfold purification, one will enjoy the treasury of jewels in the future. Thus, in the Tantra of the arising of the Ocean of Ambrosia, it is said: To the Buddhas who fill the sky, adorned with various jewels, offering that fills three thousand worlds, even if one smears a single pore of the Guru with a drop of butter, it is not worth a hundred thousand rains. Finally, by pleasing the Guru through various actions, such as standing up when the Guru rises, folding one's palms, offering a seat when the Guru sits, offering a Mandala, and covering one's mouth with one's hand when yawning in the presence of one's own Guru, in short, by acting like a new bride, one will breathe in the realm of manifestation. Moreover, by cherishing the Guru in one's heart as one's own beloved child, blessings will arise like a wish-fulfilling cow. By regarding the Guru as food for the time, blessings will arise like food and drink for the hungry and thirsty. By relying on the Guru without distraction, like a sick person relying on a doctor, one will enjoy constant happiness. Likewise, one should rely on the Guru through various means, like a guide on a dangerous path, like a lamp in a dark room, and like a wish-fulfilling jewel. The fourth general meaning is how to pray: In the Tantra of the arising of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel, it is said: The Guru Vajradhara is the only friend in the three realms of Samsara, the protector of beings without refuge, the great ladder to liberation, the lamp that dispels ignorance. I seek refuge in the Lord of Darkness. In the swamp of Samsara, protect me, who am drowning and without refuge.
