Herein lies the Iron Garland. Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! Explaining the occasion of the nature of reality, it elucidates the meaning of abiding by its own nature. That is to say, the nature of space is like mustard seed oil pervading everything, abiding universally. Vajra is the meaning of the unconditioned. Sattva is the essence of enlightenment, its meaning is definitively explained, and it abides possessing five kinds of greatness. What are the five? The greatness of manifest enlightenment, The greatness of the great self-enlightenment, The greatness of enlightenment in the realm of dharma, The greatness of enlightenment by being that, The greatness of the absence of enlightenment from everything to everything. Samantabhadra, vast is the realm of dharma. That is to say, unmixed and perfectly complete is the realm of dharma, that is, Samantabhadra. Moreover, because it is free from all activities, it abides in the non-abiding realm. Utterly pure, the great path for liberating all. That is to say, being free from all seeking is the great path, because it liberates with utter purity. Not born, not ceasing, upon what do you not contemplate? That is to say, because there is no object of focus on the thusness of equality, there is no birth. Likewise, having abandoned the extremes of grasping and being grasped, because it does not abide in any object, it does not contemplate upon anything. Because of love, the very meaning is utterly purified. That is to say, not seeing self and sentient beings is the meaning of great love. Because all objects, inner and outer, are not fixated upon, they are utterly purified. Because it is free from all phenomena to be made manifest, not abiding in all phenomena is great compassion. In any case, because it does not fixate on the benefit of self and others, great compassion does not act upon anything. Thus it is said. By greatness, the profoundness of greatness. That is to say, greatness is the nature of reality. The greatness of greatness is all sentient beings, because it is the field of profound enlightenment. Moreover, because samsara and nirvana are the essence of equality, and because it is excellent in the ocean of qualities, and because it does not attach words to the stages of the earth and so on, there is no praise for qualities in anything. Thus it arises. Things are not produced as they are.

Like the sky, actions and words, because they do not abide in suchness, are separated from all realms of action. Liberated by non-action, thus liberates. (Explanation of this sentence:) There is no action in the great tranquility, why? Because all beings are of the nature of tranquility, therefore liberated by the power of self-arising, and liberated by realizing the realm of non-attainment. Self-arising wisdom is without effort. (Explanation of this sentence:) Not relying on the power of others but arising from oneself, therefore without effort. Having liberated, also shows the path of liberation. (Explanation of this sentence:) Thus, when the king of awareness becomes independent, it is liberation, because the nature of reality appears as liberation. The chapter on the nature of reality is complete. Chapter One. Now, the chapter on naturally abiding is explained, how the meaning of Buddha-nature naturally abiding in all sentient beings is shown. The great elements, the Bhagavan. (Explanation of this sentence:) The five elements are the five great elements, how are they? Earth Vajra, Water Vajra, Fire Vajra, Wind Vajra, and Space Vajra. Among them, Space Vajra is the Buddha who shows the appearance of reality. Earth Vajra is the Buddha who inherently abides and holds the essence of reality. Fire Vajra is the nature of the Ratnasambhava Buddha of reality. Water Vajra is the Buddha who moistens all limitless sentient beings with great compassion. Wind Vajra is the Buddha who, with great wisdom, moves among sentient beings covered by great ignorance, and liberates them from great light. Thus, these five great elements are also the body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas. The aggregates of sentient beings are the three of body, speech, and mind, and because they abide in Bodhi, they are the great elements, the Bhagavan. The nature abides in all sentient beings, thus it is said. Although guided by inversion, it does not arise from others, but because Bodhi arises from one's own awareness, although discriminated by inversion, liberation is self-arising and not from others, thus it is said. Chapter Two. Now, the chapter on naturally abiding in greatness is explained, that is, being completely perfect, not changing by the power of others, and naturally abiding in greatness.
