Thus I have heard, at one time, the Bhagavan was in the great charnel ground of Cool Grove, together with the retinue of Yakshas, Rakshasas, flesh-eaters, Nagas, and the hosts of Matris. At that time, the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how should the teachings be protected in the degenerate age? After this request, the Bhagavan said: Lord of Secrets, if you wish to protect the teachings in the degenerate age, in the northeast of Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya) there is a great charnel ground called Cool Grove, a water field of six kuroshas. The shapes of the corpses are swollen, rotten, half-rotten, skeletons, heads, spines, and limbs, and so on. There, there are beings who eat, suck, cut, drink, and absorb corpses, there are charnel ground birds and many wild animals, and also the retinue of the charnel ground mistress, the wrathful mother, Chamundi, the long-lipped Rakshasi, the emaciated mother, the cohabiting savior mother, the flesh-eating mother, the blood-drinking mother, and also many other Matri retinues and the mistresses of the charnel ground. There is an ocean called Island Assembly, which is very vast and deep, with raging waves, and the color is like blood. In the ocean, there also dwell fierce creatures such as crocodiles, piranhas, conches, venomous snakes, fish, and frogs. The master of that ocean is the black Naga Ananta. Fierce and powerful beings also dwell there. In that charnel ground, there is a stupa called Bliss-Maker, supported by eight precious pillars, five cubits high, with a parasol-like top, adorned with lintels and five stupas, adorned with coral and door ornaments, and its color is black. It is controlled by the black Yaksha and the black messenger. The tree that grows from there is called Ashanyagrota, its color is black and its size is large, with a single trunk and lush foliage, its smell is unpleasant, its thorns are sharp, its poison is strong, its leaves are dense, and the black birds of demons and venomous snakes

Those. Therein reside the assembly of fierce black demons. In the center of that charnel ground, there is a three-tiered black iron house without doors, with flames blazing at the top, blood boiling at the base, and smoke billowing from the walls. Inside such a place resides a demon named Bighnakha (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanized, Chinese literal meaning), along with attendant demons, yakshas, matrikas, nagas, and others, who are extremely wicked and possess great power, having the power to destroy the world. Therefore, he does not hinder the work of protecting the Dharma. Thus spoke the Bhagavan. This is the first chapter, the introduction. Then, the Lord of Secrets petitioned the Bhagavan thus: O Bhagavan, please bless me. Thus he petitioned. Then, the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, raised the threatening mudra, rolled his eyes, raised his hair, opened his feet and mouth wide, uttered the vajra sound, and advanced. The demons were terrified, and the attendants were also frightened, and they petitioned thus: What should we do? Grant us commands and vows. We offer our life essence. Do not be too harsh on your servants. Grant us good commands and vows. What are my methods of work and food? When they petitioned thus, the Lord of Secrets commanded: Hurl hailstones into the world. Eat the heart blood of those who break their vows. That is your method of work and food. Having said this, they offered their life essence and bound themselves with their own vows. This is the second chapter, the subduing of demons. Then, the Lord of Secrets petitioned: O Bhagavan, if one wishes to subdue a demon, how should one subdue it? What are the pledge substances for this? The Bhagavan said: In the depths of the forest or in the charnel ground, strive to enter without fail. Accumulate merit and purify transgressions. Establish the truth of the witness image. Fulfill the samaya with external offerings. After demarcating the boundaries of outer, inner, and secret, draw the mandala of the deity of approach within. On a square platform of arrow-length, place offerings of incense and blood. In the center, draw a dark blue triangle. Construct walls with five colors of paint. Draw a beautiful mountain of fire around the edge. In the four directions of that mandala, place four circular mandalas of blood. Draw charnel grounds, lakes, stupas, and trees in order on the borders. In the three-tiered black iron house, draw the life essence inside without doors.
