From the common general vows, the special vows of the Mamo should be guarded as follows. Be equipped with items and implements. Know the causes and times of the Mamo. Do not encounter those who have broken their vows. Also, clearly visualize the deity you rely on. Recite the essence of the Mamo without error. Do not commit even small faults. The teacher should strictly keep the vows from enemies. Do not reveal them to anyone. To the Mamo and the practitioner. This is the vow of the Mamo. It should be guarded as if protecting one's own life. From the Tantra of Excavating the Heart Drop, Chapter Nine: The Chapter on Declaring the Vows of the Mamo. The source of how this tantra arose is: When meditating in the Dhana Sangshita Cool Grove charnel ground, from within the house of Baritaka appeared something surrounded by wondrous Dharma light. Because the worldly Mamos gathered, made offerings, and prostrations declined, obstacles were also created for the teacher. Then the teacher also went to the stacked Stupa of Bliss, and seduced the Mamos with flesh and blood, making them submit. The next morning, when the Mamos arrived, they said, 'Take away your own life essence!' The Mamo then came there. Then the Mamos were subdued. Then the teacher also hid them in the Cool Grove charnel ground. It is said that they were taken away by the Tsenpo (king) because enemies were causing unrest. The Tantra of Excavating the Heart Drop of the Mamos is thus completed.
