In the language of India: Baktabta, Padta, Padna. In Tibetan: The Great Compassion, the Tantra of the Spreading Lotus. Homage to the Bhagavan, Boundless Light. Thus have I heard. At one time, in the lotus-free palace in the realm of Sukhavati, the Buddha Boundless Light, along with the mother White-Robed Mother, Giti Mother, Aloke, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, Amitayus, Boundless Light, and others, were surrounded and abiding. At that time, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Freedom, and the Dakini, the Lady of Freedom, asked the Buddha Boundless Light, "How much do you observe sentient beings?" The Buddha said to the assembly, "I widely observe as far as the sky extends. In narrow places, I observe all beings in the six realms, especially humans among the six realms." Thus he spoke. Again they asked, "How does the nature of compassion arise from observation? How does the essence arise from observation?" Thus they asked. Again he said, "The nature of compassion pervades like the sky. The essence arises like the sun. The emanation of my body is Avalokiteshvara. The emanation of speech is the Dakini, Secret Wisdom. The emanation of compassion is the glorious Hayagriva. The emanation of qualities is Padmasambhava. The emanation of activity is the four self-born brothers. The distinction is that all sentient beings may have happiness and be free from suffering." From the Great Compassion, the Tantra of the Spreading Lotus, the first chapter, the basis of discussion and the initiation of discussion. Then again, the assembly asked the Buddha Boundless Light, "What is the essence of self-born awareness?" The Dharmakaya Boundless Light replied, "The essence is the unchanging Dharmakaya, unmade, unadorned, spontaneously accomplished. The unmade is the Dharmakaya. The unadorned is great bliss. Spontaneously accomplished, the nature of reality is completely pure. The five poisons are perfected as the essence of the five wisdoms." Thus he spoke. Again they asked, "What is the nature and characteristic of awareness?" Thus they asked. "The essence is emptiness, the Dharmakaya. Appearances arise without inherent nature. All natures of cause and effect, good and bad, enter into emptiness without grasping. The nature of entities is purified into emptiness. From emptiness, clarity arises purely. Emptiness is the nature of compas-
