The Tantra Called "Subduing the Nāgas" In Sanskrit: Nāga Vinaya Tantra Nāma. In Tibetan: The Tantra Called "Subduing the Nāgas." Homage to the Glorious Hayagrīva, the Wrathful Subduer of Nāgas! Thus I have heard, at one time, in the realm of the venomous, in the center of the great ocean, the abode of the eight great nāgas, in the palace of blazing black serpents, in that extremely terrifying place, the nāga king Hayagrīva, Vajrapāṇi, and the Garuḍas, for the purpose of subduing the nāgas, resided in the realm of the nāgas, and spoke this mantra of the lineage of subduing the nāgas. Namo buddhāya. Oṃ vajra kīli kīlāya. Nāga duna candhi candhi. Mili mili. Bandha bandha. Nāgani svāhā. Oṃ vajra kīli kīlāya. Nāga duna candhi candhi. Mili mili. Bandha bandha. Nāgani svāhā., Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Buddha. Om, Vajra Kilaya, Kilaya. Naga, Duna, Candhi, Candhi. Mili, Mili. Bandha, Bandha. Naga, Svaha.) Having recited this, all the nāgas were terrified and fainted. Then, the eight great nāgas spoke thus: "O, O, Great Hero, Three Wrathful Terrors! To us, the assembly of nāgas, Do not inflict punishment, we wish to be subjects. Do not be too harsh on the subjects!" Hūṃ nāgarāja samaya ja. Thus the nāga kings offered. Nāgarāja vasukini ja ja. Thus the four nāga clans offered. The first chapter, the introduction of offering the life-essence of subduing the nāgas. Then again, the eight nāgas requested: "Emaho! Three Great Terrors! In the final age of the five hundred, The teachings of us nāgas will arise. The retinues of us nāgas, Will harm sentient beings. At that time, protection and taming, The order of recitation and activities, Killing, suppressing, and burning, Accomplishing nāgas, nourishing nāgas, offering to nāgas, Mortgaging, binding, moving supports, and so forth, The manner of entering, intentions, and signs, Entrusting life-essence and the conclusion of activities, Please bestow instructions in order!" The second chapter, the chapter of requesting instructions. Then, the supreme horse king, Spoke to the assembly of the retinue: "First, the order of meditating on samādhi, First, the nature of reality is emptiness itself. From that, meditate on pervasive compassion. Then, one's own mind is the syllable Hrīḥ. (Tibetan: ཧྲཱྀཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः, Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hrīḥ) From that, light radiates, the letter E (Tibetan: ཨེ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ए, Sanskrit Romanization: e, Literal Chinese meaning: E) transforms into space. Above that, the letter Yaṃ (Tibetan: ཡཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: यं, Sanskrit Romanization: yaṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Yaṃ) transforms into a wind mandala. Above that, the letter Ra (Tibetan: ར་, Sanskrit Devanagari: र, Sanskrit Romanization: ra, Literal Chinese meaning: Ra) transforms into an ocean of blood. Above that, the letter Raṃ (Tibetan: རཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: रं, Sanskrit Romanization: raṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Raṃ) transforms into a fire mandala. Above that, the letter Laṃ (Tibetan: ལཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: लं, Sanskrit Romanization: laṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Laṃ) transforms into a great land. Above that, the letter Keṃ (Tibetan: ཀེཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: के, Sanskrit Romanization: keṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Keṃ) transforms into a mountain of bones. Above that,

I visualize a palace from BHRUM (藏文,梵文天城体:भ्रूं,梵文罗马拟音:bhrūṃ,汉语字面意思:Seed Syllable), Outside, it is built with five kinds of precious jewels, Inside is the palace of BANDHA (藏文,梵文天城体:बन्ध,梵文罗马拟音:bandha,汉语字面意思:Bondage), With four doors on four sides, The pillars are makaras, the beams are great serpents, Decorated with fish, frogs, crabs, snakes, and carnivorous beasts, It is an extremely terrifying palace. The root syllable HRIH (藏文,梵文天城体:ह्रीः,梵文罗马拟音:hrīḥ,汉语字面意思:Great Compassion) is of the palace, Descending upon the seat of sun, moon, lotus, and dragons, From that arises the body of the powerful Hayagriva, The body is dark red, with one face, The two hands hold a phurba, The mouth draws in and eats snakes, The feet trample on the heads of snakes, Subduing with lotus wings, On the left and right shoulders and the crown of the head, Visualize one emanation of Garuda each, The body is golden, the wings are iron, The beak and claws are copper, the six claws are iron, The mouth draws in and eats snakes, Visualize taming and devouring the nagas. Clearly visualize the form in this way, And with many emanations of emanations, Visualize filling it, this is samadhi. Invite from the place of self-nature, Offer all the offerings and praises. Thus it was said. This is the Third Chapter, on Visualizing the Deity. Then, the assembly of attendant nagas asked: "O Great Glorious Hayagriva, How do you subdue the nagas with the phurba?" The Great Glorious Father replied: "If you wish to subdue the nagas with the phurba, Surround it with a triangle of burning flames, This is the mandala of subjugation, Smear it black with poisonous blood and charcoal, Place meat in the east, a vajra in the south, Flowers in the west, oil in the north, Place a sandalwood phurba in the center, Visualize the phurba as Hayagriva and the three deities, Fumigate the phurba with gugul incense, Recite the mantra a hundred thousand times and praise it, In between, continuously praise and subdue, Offer meat, oil torma, and offerings, Eat the meat and oil and smear it, Hold sand on the body and strike it, Light radiates from the phurba, With rays of light like the sun, It can pacify all evil nagas, The four classes will be subdued, As long as samsara exists, The actions of the nagas will not succeed." This is the Fourth Chapter, on Averting with the Naga Phurba. Then, he spoke of this practice of reciting and subduing nagas and demons: First, by reciting HRIH (藏文,梵文天城体:ह्रीः,梵文罗马拟音:hrīḥ,汉语字面意思:Great Compassion), From the realm of bottomless and boundless space, All appearing forms of beings, Become the deity of the powerful Hayagriva, Visualize yourself as Hayagriva, from the heart, Emerge a small wrathful Hayagriva, the size of a finger, Holding various weapons in his hands,
