Looking purely at what arises and enters, both externally and internally. Thus it was said. The second chapter, 'Explaining the Nature of Confusion,' from the Precious Wheel Tantra, is complete. Following the words of that request, Vajrasattva again asked: 'What analogy can illustrate the characteristics of the ground and confusion? What is the difference between the ground and confusion? How is the root of confusion completely severed?' Having heard these clear words, the great Lord of Secrets replied: 'The ground is known as the aspect of the all-ground consciousness. Confusion is the mind that seeks everywhere. The ground is primordially existent. Confusion is the adventitious conceptualization of the mind. The ground is the cause of awareness. Confusion appears as fragments of conceptual thought. From mirages and tree stumps, the examples of confusion are illustrated by water, ghosts, and people. It is free from causes and conditions of fabrication, corruption, increase, and decrease. There is no change, action, seeking, or alteration. It is uncompounded, spontaneously accomplished, and does not depend on adventitious phenomena. The meaning of uncompounded, uncorrupted, and unsought is liberation from minds with grasping. The all-ground consciousness is the basis of ignorance. That co-emergent ignorance is the basis of the mind's consciousness. That moving mind's consciousness is the basis of the afflicted mind. That afflicted moving consciousness is the basis of the five sense consciousnesses. These two minds, looking outward and inward, sever confusion as being non-existent on the ground.' Thus it was said. The third chapter, 'Completely Severing the Root of Confusion,' from the Precious Wheel Tantra, is complete. Then, following the words of the request, Vajrasattva again asked: 'Is there a special Dharma, a method for clearing away and reversing confusion?' Having heard these words of request, the great Lord of Secrets replied: 'If confusion is cleared away, darkness is cleared away. If confusion is reversed, it is reversed from the cause. When the five senses are clear in relation to their objects, it is reversed by knowing the characteristic of appearance. When the five poisons are clear, it is reversed by knowing them as adventitious confusion. When the mind looks inward, it is reversed by knowing it as the mind's grasping. Doubt arises about true Dharma, and clinging arises to untrue Dharma. When knowledge of truth and falsehood arises, it is reversed by knowing it as the confusion of ignorance. When nothing is known or clear, it is reversed by the instructions entering one's own continuum. If appearances are not stopped or cultivated, then it is the clearing away of external confusion. If clarity does not engage with objects, then it is the clearing away of the confusion of the basis. Inwardly, the clinging to self'
