One should diligently take refuge. Incidentally, the precepts of taking refuge include six individual precepts and five common ones. First, the individual precepts include three to be abandoned and three to be cultivated. The first three to be abandoned are: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, do not pay homage to gods who are trapped in samsara. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, do not harm sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, do not associate with non-Buddhist friends. The three to be cultivated are: Act according to the Buddha's teachings, do not forget them, and treat them with faith and respect, even showing respect to broken pieces of Buddha statues. Strive to hear, contemplate, and meditate on the excellent Dharma, and show respect even to the Dharma's support, such as written letters. Treat the Sangha, the followers of the Buddha, with faith and respect, associate with virtuous friends, and show respect even to just yellow monastic robes. The five common ones are: Even at the cost of one's life, do not abandon the Three Jewels. Even when there is a very important need, do not seek other means. Do not interrupt timely offerings, and guide oneself and others to take refuge. Wherever one goes, pay homage to the Buddha in that direction. Second is the generation of Bodhicitta. Generally, there are two types of Bodhicitta: relative Bodhicitta and ultimate Bodhicitta. Relative Bodhicitta is the mind that seeks perfect enlightenment for the benefit of others. Ultimate Bodhicitta is the wisdom that directly realizes emptiness. If relative Bodhicitta is categorized, there are two types: aspiration Bodhicitta, like wanting to go somewhere, and action Bodhicitta, like actually going. Because both arise based on the Bodhicitta ceremony, they are called coarse Bodhicitta that arises from symbols. Ultimate Bodhicitta must arise through the power of cultivating the path, so it is called subtle Bodhicitta that is obtained through the nature of reality. Relative Bodhicitta also has two meanings or two aspects: focusing on sentient beings with compassion, and focusing on perfect enlightenment with wisdom. If these two aspects are lacking, it cannot become Mahayana Bodhicitta, so it is necessary to have both of these aspects. Among them, here, merely generating aspiration Bodhicitta has two aspects: focusing on the cause—merit, and aspiring for the result—perfect enlightenment. The first is: As it is said in the sutras, "I, with generosity, etc.," if all roots of virtue are gathered, it is the basis for the activity of merit.
