"A Concise Explanation of Refuge and Mind Training: An Explanation of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha Assembly" "A Concise Explanation of Refuge and Mind Training: An Explanation of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha Assembly" Among various necessities, there is "A Concise Explanation of Refuge and Mind Training: An Explanation of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha Assembly." This is the foundation of all paths to liberation, the basis of all vows, the source of all qualities, distinguishing between outsiders and insiders, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, the foundation for accomplishing the state of perfect Buddhahood, and the source of all goodness in samsara and nirvana—generating the supreme Bodhicitta. Now, what will be explained are these two: taking refuge and generating the mind. First, taking refuge is divided into three aspects: the object of refuge, the time limit, and the actual act of taking refuge. First, regarding the object: the unsurpassed teacher, the perfect Buddha; the unsurpassed protector, the sacred Dharma; the unsurpassed guide, the supreme assembly of the Sangha, the noble Sangha. First, the Buddha possesses the four bodies and five wisdoms: The four bodies are: the Svabhavikakaya, the nature body, free from all obscurations; the Dharmakaya, the Dharma body, with unceasing wisdom and knowledge; the Sambhogakaya, the enjoyment body, the self-appearing form body adorned with signs and marks; and the Nirmanakaya, the emanation body, appearing to those to be tamed. The five wisdoms are: the Dharmadhatu wisdom, the wisdom of the sphere of reality, pure in its essence; the mirror-like wisdom, the unceasing clarity of wisdom; the wisdom of equality, without near or far, attachment or aversion; the discriminating wisdom, knowing all knowable things without confusion; and the accomplishing wisdom, effortlessly accomplishing the benefit of others. The Dharma is the nature of scripture and realization. The scripture has three pitakas: the Vinaya Pitaka, which tames the afflictions of one's own mind; the Sutra Pitaka, which concisely summarizes words and divides meanings into categories; and the Abhidharma Pitaka, which generates the wisdom of realizing reality. The realization of Dharma is: the training in higher morality, which is the subject matter of the Vinaya Pitaka; the training in higher concentration, which is the subject matter of the Sutra Pitaka; and the training in higher wisdom, which is the subject matter of the Abhidharma Pitaka. By practicing these three trainings, the qualities of abandonment and realization of the five paths and ten bhumis are generated in the mind stream, thereby perfecting abandonment.

The truth of cessation of suffering and the truth of the path, which is the complete realization, are the two truths. The Sangha is the Sangha of Bodhisattvas who do not regress, because they directly realize emptiness with wisdom and do not regress in samsara, and because they cherish beings like an only child with compassion, they do not fall into the extreme of peace, but are the Bodhisattvas who reside on the ten bhumis. Secondly, the time limit for taking refuge is the phrase "until enlightenment." At this time, the Mahayana refuge has three characteristics: In terms of the object, the Hinayana people believe that among the two-legged ones, the Buddha is the most supreme, and only the most supreme manifestation, Shakyamuni Buddha, is recognized, and the Dharmakaya and Sambhogakaya are not recognized. Moreover, it is believed that after the manifestation of Nirvana by the manifested Buddha, the work of benefiting beings will be interrupted. Nirvana is the most supreme of those who are free from desire and attachment. Dharma refers to the truth of cessation, and only Nirvana is regarded as the Dharma Jewel. The most supreme of the Sangha is the Sangha. Among the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha saints, the Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhat fruits are recognized. The Mahayana is as described above. In terms of the time, the Hinayana people take refuge temporarily, that is, for the rest of their lives; ultimately, it is until they obtain the fruits of Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha. In terms of the intention, the Hinayana people take refuge with the intention of renunciation, wanting to be liberated from all the sufferings of samsara. The Mahayana people take refuge with the intention of generating the mind of wanting all sentient beings to attain Buddhahood. Thirdly, the actual taking of refuge is when practicing the words "I take refuge," on one atom, there are Buddhas as numerous as atoms and retinues of Bodhisattvas, and so on, until the edge of the Dharmadhatu, in the continuums of all the Buddhas and retinues, is filled with the holy Dharma of hearing and realization, and all those who abide, with the qualities of great compassion, great wisdom, and great power, love and guide me and all sentient beings, and abide as a great guide in front of them, with oneself and all other sentient beings joining their palms together, from this time until the attainment of the essence of enlightenment, relying on the Three Jewels of refuge, offering to you, practicing you, there is no refuge or hope other than you, and trusting you in whatever you do.
