Furthermore, there are two ways in which learned Pandit teachers expound the teachings. The Pandits residing in the glorious Nalanda Monastery would explain all the Buddha's words through the five perfections and all treatises through the fivefold division. The Pandits residing in the Vikramashila Monastery would explain by making the listeners suitable vessels and ascertaining the origin of the teachings. Here, if we were to explain according to the first method, since the treatise is like a wish-fulfilling treasure and not the Buddha's word, we would explain it through the fivefold division: Who is the author? The best is one who has seen the truth of reality, the intermediate is one who has received the blessings of the yidam deity, and the lowest is one who is skilled in the five sciences. The three causes for composing a treatise are fully complete, and relying on the wisdom of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, the omniscient Dharma King, the glorious Lord of Speech, who has reached the other shore of the ocean of his own and others' tenets, has composed it. From where was it collected? It was collected from the commentaries on the three pitakas and the four classes of tantras. To which side does it belong? In general, of the two vehicles, the Lesser and the Greater, it belongs to the Greater Vehicle. Of the two aspects of the Great Vehicle, Sutra and Tantra, it belongs to the Unsurpassed Tantra. What is the meaning contained from beginning to end? It is contained in showing the nature of samsara as something to be abandoned and showing the nature of nirvana as something to be attained. For whose benefit was it composed? In general, it was composed for the purpose of placing limitless sentient beings on the path of liberation, and in particular, for the purpose of enabling fortunate disciples to understand what to accept and reject in samsara and nirvana, and to attain the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime by relying on hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Thus, by explaining through the fivefold division, there is a need to have faith in the genuine Dharma. Secondly, the way in which the disciple should listen is: one must listen by abandoning the three faults of the vessel, the six stains, and the five non-retentions, and by relying on the four mindfulnesses and possessing the six perfections. First, the three faults of the vessel are: As it is said, the fault of not listening is like an overturned vessel, the fault of not retaining in the mind is like a vessel with a hole in the bottom, and mixing with afflictions is like a poisonous vessel.

The fault of. Thus it is said. Also, abandoning those three faults, it is said in the Sutra: Listen well and carefully, and keep it in mind. Thus it is said. The six stains are: In the 'Explanation of Knowledge,' it says: Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, external distraction gathering inward, listening with weariness are stains. Thus it is said. The five non-grasps are: Grasping the words but not grasping the meaning, grasping the meaning but not grasping the words, grasping without understanding the language, grasping the meaning in reverse, grasping with the order of top and bottom reversed, are the five. The four perceptions are: In the 'Extensive Play,' it says: Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of being sick towards yourself, the perception of medicine towards the Dharma, the perception of a skilled doctor towards the virtuous friend, and the perception of nourishing the disease with food towards diligent practice. Thus it is said. The six perfections are: In the 'Tantra of Manifesting the Quintessence of All Dharma Practices,' it says: Offering flowers, cushions, etc., well, discipline of place and conduct, not harming all sentient beings, supplicating the Lama, listening to the Lama's instructions without distraction, asking fault-finding words to dispel doubts, Tara possesses six limbs. Thus it is said. How should these two engage in teaching and listening? Vasubandhu said: To those who wish to speak on the meaning of the Sutras, give a little instruction. This is the instruction: To be explained with the meaning of the necessity condensed, with the meaning of the words, with the connection, and with the refutation. Thus, for each section, showing the necessary purpose of establishing it in that way is the necessary meaning; briefly summarizing the key points of its meaning is the condensed meaning; explaining the order of the words, including case endings and particles, without error, is the meaning of the words; connecting the before and after, and the above and below, is the meaning of the connection; cutting off from the source the external opponent or doubt, and deciding through the method of refutation. That is, the five great essentials, or, as usual, dividing the ground like a tigress leaping, emphasizing each word like a tortoise's slow pace, summarizing the meaning of the chapter like a lion's majestic posture, explaining in any of the three ways. Second, explaining the actual object to be explained, first is the auspicious meaning of the beginning, in the middle is the auspicious meaning of the main body, and finally is the auspicious meaning of the conclusion, these three. First, stating the title.
